WSBT-TV: Frugal Storage Solutions
POSTED BY Amy at 8:50 AM
I wanted to post my
WSBT-TV segment before the crew head over and tape more of our future segments to air later this month. This morning I got to share
easy ways that you can organize your belongings, without spending a lot of cash. This segment goes along with our article on
Frugal Storage Solutions for your home.
Next week I will be discussing fun ideas for a frugal Valentine's Day! I look forward to sharing some of my thrifty solutions for the holiday and I hope you will check back for more fun ideas.
I promise to post our results from our
Valentines giveaway later today and I will be guest-writing for
Frugal Hacks so I will be sharing that later as well. In the meantime, did you enter the
Starbucks $20 gift card giveaway? I am floored by how many people have entered. I don't know what I would do if I got comment love like that every day, but it has been so fun to see all of the entries for the contest. Who am I kidding? I would love comment love like that everyday. Who wouldn't? You feel like a blogging rock star and that feels pretty darn good.
Back to our topic for discussion...

"We collect box tops from Sams or office suppply stores and use them to hold season packs, packaged potatos and rices, etc. on a rolling rack we store in our laundry room. Flip the box tops upside down and write on the forward facing edge to indicate what's inside (seasoning packs, rice, mashed potatoes, etc.)."

"Shelves, boxes, and labels. Yup. My organizing project this year is the entire house, as we just moved."
"I have a home office and I use a dresser to hold office supplies like business cards and envelopes and such. The top holds my small tv, clock, lamp, and files that I use every day. Who knew that a dresser would come in so handy in the home office. I also put things in suit cases that we are not using right now, holds boots in the summer and flip flops in the winter."

"We buy clementines by the wooden crate or cardboard crate and keep the crates to sort the kids; toys, puzzles, art supplies, stickers, musical instruments etc. See my blog for recent photos: http://mamasvillage.blogspot.com/2008/01/clemies-corks.html
Any business sized envelopes we get in the mail we keep and re use to hold our receipts, by tax time there are lots of mostly, well organized envelopes.
Empty kleenex boxes are good for kids' puzzles too.
Good luck with your show taping!"

"What are you talking about?!? You are a blogging rock star!
I have my husband bring home the paper boxes from his office copy machine. I like that they have tops and are identically sized for easy stacking."

"Mark down pencil boxes work great for just about anything that fits in it. We have a over the door shoe rack in three rooms, with no shoes. They hold shampoos, deoderants, pencils, you name it.
It's not the best idea but we have a set of bunk beds in our bedroom and use the top bunk for storage.
When we get our home we will be getting a real grown up bed. But then we'll have more than two bedrooms and a ched for storage then. ::grin::"

"I feel so on top of it. I always save my jars and cans to store things.
You have great ideas."

"I like to use a lot of baskets and wicker "boxes" that I buy at Thrift stores. it is very functional and looks nice. Also shoe boxes are great for those "little things" the kids manage to accumulate, oatmeal and those round chip cartons are great office organizers, and I like to use the plastic inserts from cookie pkgs. to place in drawers and use as organizers and dividers."

"I desperately need to organize my son's baby clothes!! Right now they are in a giant pile! :-)"

"Meredith stole my comment! You ARE a bloggy rock-star! My kids keep teasing me that I have to GIVE THINGS AWAY to get people to read my blog. Sad, so sad but true! LOL!
I have a itsy-bitsy kitchen in an itsy-bitsy house that I want to get organized on an itsy-bitsy budget!
Loooove all the ideas!"

"I use baby wipe boxes. They are durable, have hinged lids (so the top doesn't get lost) and you can't see inside.
Clear storage is handy, but there is a case to be made for an anonymous stack of white boxes holding crafty goodness with small children around. If they could SEE the glitter we'd never get anything done!
I also use Rubbermaid Take-A-Longs to store all kinds of small items."

"Wow, you're so famous and I'm so glad I have a famous friend!
My organizing project this year is to clean out all our closets and our basement for a big, over the top, garage sale!
Wish.me.luck."

"OK, now that's too funny that we both posted about frugal storage today. I must be channeling you (since you'd planned yours in advance)."

"Great ideas, Amy. I'm with you on the jars and photo boxes. We also use several inexpensive fabric bins, similar to the cubes (but they don't fold flat)."
Rachel
"We use baby wipes containers for a lot of purposes, baby food jars to keep things in our junk drawer organized, salad containers from the warehouse club as drawer dividers, and divided vegetable trays (when I find them marked down in the produce section) for keeping order in our bathroom drawers. I also save sturdy shoeboxes and colored boxes from retailers (from gifts from Gymborree, Children's Place, VS, etc.) to add a nice punch of color to some areas while providing storage. I also use tote bags and those zippered clear bags that linens come in for kids' clothing storage."
Angie
"Our local dollar stores have great bins and baskets in kid-friendly colors for ...well...a dollar.
IKEA is also a fun place to look for inexpensive storage solutions. Of course IKEA is a fun place to look for anything!
Great segment, Amy!"
