One of My Birthday Gifts

We are celebrating with our family tonight, but Ryan decided to give me my birthday present early so I could stop lusting after these at TJ Maxx. Here is my beautiful Cuisinart Cast Iron Pot. It is such a beautiful shade of red and I can't wait to cook in it. I have wanted one of these forever and I finally got it!

Along with this, I have gotten the go-ahead to get myself a new set of pots. Here is the thing...I don't know what kind of pots I want, but I know I want something that will be good quality and last me for the rest of my life. The only qualification is that I do not want nonstick cookware. Any suggestions from my favorite peanut gallery?

"Get a set of stainless steel pots -they're better for cooking with as it is, and you don't get the side effects that you would from nonstick (chemically speaking). You do have to be careful if you have a gas stove, however, because the flames can do a world of tarnishing to the pretty exterior."

"YEAH! I'm so jazzed you got the best! I love the red :-)....you'll find your "stuff" cooks so fantastic in it.

I'm in Spain right now and helping daughter, seeing the sites, etc. and I'm really enjoying using her stainless steel cookware from IKEA. Not bad! If you're near an IKEA, check it out! But, they don't have the RED you have or the BLUE I have.

Happy B-D! lylah"

"I have two enameled cast iron Dutch ovens from Ikea that I love! Congrats; you'll use this all the time.

I'm in the market for cookware too so I hope you post your conclusions about what to get. One thing I've noticed in browsing around is that a lot of high-end cookware can't go in the dishwasher. You might want to keep that in mind. I personally want to be able to use my dishwasher!"

"Amy...you will LOVE LOVE LOVE this piece of cookware...I got a similar one for Christmas and have used it several times. I even leave it out on the stove just to ooh and aah at it's prettiness. Mine is a lovely cool blue color. Just used it last night for fried green beans!"

"Yaaaay for your b-day gift(s)...I want to see what you end up getting for the set of pots. I've been eyeing all the amazing deals on pot/pan sets at Amazon and just can't make up my mind. Can't wait to see what you decide on. :)

"Happy Birthday!!! And good luck with the pots - I have a hand-me-down set from I got married five years ago, and my boss was moving to Boston. She didn't want to move her pots, so she gave them to me... I am so envious that you are getting a new set!"

"I agree with the stainless steel. I bought Revereware 7 + years ago and I have been very happy with my set! The handles are still very secure, the lids still fit tight, etc."

"I am a great believer in good cookware. I have been through them al, costly and dirt cheap. My absolute, I'd-rescue-them-from-my-burning-house are my Simply Calphalon (non-nonstick) pots. I also have about 10 pcs of Le Creuset cookware (in red & blue, Army wife with patriotic cookware!). They are both worth every stinkin' penny. They never chip, show wear or look like I got them at a garage sale.
I use my pots constantly. Got the 1st small one last year from hubby for a kick-butt gift and never looked back. You can get them both through Amazon, and with the weight, the S&H will be FREE."

"My pots and pans are All-Clad. I love them. There are three caveats, though. You can't put them in the dishwasher. They can be heavy to lift. And...they can be pretty expensive. (but, if you buy them from Bed Bath and Beyond you can use the 20% off coupons....even though it says at the bottom of the coupon that you can't use the coupon for All-Clad.) Good luck with the search!

One final tip...On Cooks Illustrated.com they rate Kitchen Equipment. You can get a free trial membership and read through their suggestions."

"Amy, I bought myself last year, for my birthday (for my hubby to give me) the most wonderful set of pans from Costco. The Kirkland brand. Absolutely adore them. This after almost 27 years of marriage - my favorite pans. Heavy, heavy stainless. Use Bar Keepers Friend powder scrub and they will always be sparkly looking. They were about $200 and worth. . . every. . . darn. . . penny.

Blessings,

Sher"

"Happy Birthday!

I have two cast iron / enamel pot pots (actually, a dutch oven, soup pot, and casserole), and I love them!

As for pots, when we married we used some wedding money to get a set of All-Clad pots (on sale of course, with a coupon too). We selected the stainless steel version, and after 8 years they still look like new! I absolutely adore them! And I cannot recommend them highly enough!"

"I highly suggest the All-Clad Stainless set "Emerilware" it's reasonably priced and comes with a lifetime warranty.
There is a small learning curve when you switch to stainless, but follow the directions that come with the pans and you'll adjust in no time."

"I was just looking at pot just like that at TJ Maxx today! I'm glad you got what you wanted!

As for pots, I love my stainless Revereware we got as a wedding gift. I've had it for over 7 years and it still looks great! Plus, I've only ever used it on a gas stove and (having just walked over to my cupboard & checked the bottoms of my pans) have no discoloring on them at all.

My sister & my mom both have the Calphalon and they love those, too.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!!"

"Very nice! I agree with the comments about Revere Ware. I buy it from garage sales and thrift stores and it's cheap and very durable stainless steel. Lasts forever! :)"

"Happy Birthday to you from me as well.

I've been a reader for over a year now. I just love your blog.

I'm trying to comment, but have had difficulties in the past, the word verification seems to dislike me.

Anyways, my husband and I, after living with his parents for the 12 years we've been married are getting our own place shortly. One would think that after 12 years of married bliss, we would have a few things, but we prety much don't.

So I look forward to reading about your pots and pans choice, why you chose them, the average cost, and (for the non cooker in me) what each pan is used for. It will give me an idea of what to look for in cooking supplies."

"We have copper-bottomed Revere ware with black handles. Classic, heats evenly, and after fifteen years of hard use and washing in the dishwasher, they're still going strong - no wobbly handles, any scorches have been removed relatively easily, and they have just performed fantastically. One note: I've always cooked on electric, so I don't know if they would perform differently on a gas range."
