Homemade Pancake Syrup
POSTED BY Amy at 9:30 AM

This weekend I hit the supermarket and found a fancy loaf of bread that I could make our delicious
French Toast out of. I decided this would be a great time to try making my own pancake syrup since it has been on my list of things to do for quite some time.
I found
this great recipe, courtesy of
Hillbilly Housewife, and decided to give it a try. The syrup was delicious and I don't think we will ever go back to the commercial stuff, especially since this was so easy to make. It was a little thinner than the commercial version, but it had a much better flavor than the store-bought variety.
I hope you can enjoy some of this in your house too!
Homemade Pancake Syrup2 cups warm tap water
4 cups sugar2 tablespoons molasses
1-1/2 teaspoons maple flavoring
1/4 teaspoon butter flavoring (optional)
In a three-quart saucepan combine the water, sugar and molasses. Put the pan on the stove over medium heat. Stir every now and then until the syrup comes to a rolling boil. Watch the syrup carefully because it has a tendency to foam and will boil over if your pan is too small. If this starts to happen, remove the pan from the heat and turn the heat down. After the syrup boils, cover the pot and simmer it for ten minutes over a low flame. Do not stir it for this ten minutes. Remove the pan from the heat. Take off the lid and let it cool on the counter for about 15 minutes. Stir in the maple flavoring (and butter flavoring if you're using it). Store the syrup in a clean quart canning jar.Labels: Grocery Shopping, Recipes

"Sounds like a great recipe. Thanks, now I'm in the mood for french toast. We bought about 10 boxes of cereal with coupons a few weeks ago and if I see another bowl of Captain Crunch in the morning I may hurl!"

"I can't remember the last time I made French Toast....this looks like a fabulous recipe! I'm hungry (again) just looking at it. Could I have it for lunch?

"I make my own syrup usually but the other day the kids were commenting that it tasted "funny." I didn't give it much thought (I don't really care much about their food oddities) and it wasn't until a week or two later I realized I'd made the syrup with root beer extract instead of maple. No wonder. Same bottle, world of difference, though Andrew claims I may just have invented a new fabulous breakfast treat :)"
"I have been "making" my own syrup for about 15 years. It was one of my first "frugal" changes. Now the store bought stuff tastes funny to our family. When the spices go on sale for 50% off right before Thanksgiving I always stock up on maple extract (since Aldi doesn't sell it!). Our recipe is even simpler though, I actually got it from a kids cookbook. 2 cups sugar, 1 cup boiling water, 1 tsp. maple extract and mix. I usually just mix it right in a pyrex measuring cup. It is thinner than store bought but we still like it. Maybe I'll have to do a taste test to see if the extra ingredients and alternate cooking method make it taste better. If I do, I'll let you know! Found your site not too long ago and I'm really enjoying it!"

"My grandma used to make her own syrup - seems to me she used butter, brown sugar and ???? It seems like it was pretty thin also.
Last night I made French Toast and tried something new on it - raspberries - wonderful! Just cooked together some frozen berries, sugar, water and cornstarch - then poured it on. Needed more sugar - but I compensated by using some syrup on them too."

"I've been making my own syrup for years now - yes, it is a bit thinner than store bought - but, I can't imagine ever switching back. Best of all - no worries about running out! It is so quick to make more!"

"I wandered over from the MIFS ring! Do you know how long this will keep in the fridge?
My kids like the store-bought fake syrup. I love the real stuff. I wonder if this would be a nice compromise.
Now I'm hankering for a big slab of french toast!"
