Good Cheap Fun- BUNCO!

I don't know if any of you participate in Bunco or any other fun game like this, but I joined a Bunco League that has been an ultimate blast for me once a month.

This past week's was probably the most fun yet because our theme was so great! The theme was "Weddings" and we all were told to wear our wedding dresses or favorite bridesmaid dress to the event. Considering how much people pay for these dresses, any opportunity you have to wear this more than once seems like a great idea to me!

I borrowed a dress from a girlfriend, who has been in her fair share of weddings, and got all dressed up for the event. My husband got a big kick out of me dressing up like this, complete with warm socks and snow boots. Considering the freezing Indiana temperatures, I wasn't about to brave it in a sexy pair of strappy shoes.

Our host went all out with a Polish Wedding Buffet complete with a wedding cake, made by her aunt. The food included homemade Polish sausage, herb-buttered noodles, mashed potatoes with gravy, green beans, and lots of yummy appetizers. We stuffed ourselves silly and then played Bunco by the light of her Unity candles.

In our league, the cost is $5 to play and a booby prize to be given to the person with the most losses. I eat more than $5 in food and sometimes I win my $5 back (or more) at the end of the game. For an entire evening of great fun and good food, it is totally worth the investment.

The booby prizes were a hoot and many people graciously passed on their ugly wedding gifts that they got from their own weddings. It was hilarious to see the gifts that were given and the hideous gifts that people got.

Each person went home with a wedding favor of chocolates wrapped in netting. Every detail went into the event and we all had such a blast dressing up and hanging out. Much thanks to our hostess for the evening for making the night so special!

If you are thinking of starting your own Bunco league, you can get more information at this website. I would highly recommend it for anyone looking for some good cheap fun. Best of all, it is a great way to build friendships and get away from the kids for a night.

"That looks like fun.
My friends and I have a Dip Club. Every two weeks we meet at each other house and bring an appetizer, dip or dessert. It is fun and we get to eat good food."

"That is such a great idea! I can remember being little and my aunts and uncles coming over to play Bunco for family parties and stuff. It brought back some good memories! Thanks - and thanks for the freezer article. Your timing couldn't be better since I just cleaned it out, and was trying to figure out what the best way to refill it would be."

"Wow! What a great theme idea :) It looks like it was a lot of fun.

I hosted a bunco game last year-it was a lot of fun. We had a small group that was playing more or less monthly for about 7 or 8 months. Then the two preggo ladies had babies and it sort of fell apart, we are looking to start up again sometime soon.

All you really need to play is 8 people, 6 dice, and some paper. Men can play too you know! Folks switch around, so it is a great way to get to know new people.

If anyone is interested in my description of the rules etc, just search on my blog for "bunco" and it should pop up."

"I played in our neighborhood group for the 4 years it lasted.....we had so much fun. There were 12 of us and we each paid $5/mo. We had Bunco, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, boobie, and travelling (travelling was whoever had the last bunco). We did many themes over the years (holidays, seasons, mexican fiesta, and a pajama party. Whoever hosted was responsible for buying the prizes with the $60 (we collected a month in advance) and serving snacks/drinks. I sure do miss it.....Ellie"

"I've never played Bunco, but I like the idea of hosting something where people can dress up in bridesmaid dresses. Did the guys wear suits if they had them?

I just saw 27 Dresses last night, and she had some really crazy dresses. Mine have all been pretty normal. =)"

"I miss Bunco! If I still lived there, I would have so been there...however, I would NOT have fit into my wedding dress, that's for damn sure. Glad you guys had so much fun...Jayne is so creative!"

"What a great idea! Surprisingly, your old bridesmaid gowns are quite fetching. Not everyone can say that! For good cheap fun, some friends and I "escape" every so often to the local Big Boy or Denny's for pie and chitchat until we feel sufficiently refreshed and ready to return home. A lovely evening. :)"

"My wife is in a bunco club and really looks forward to socializing with her friends. I don't think they ever play though, I think they sit around and talk about their husbands and drink Mike's Hard Lemonade. :-)"

"We do game night on Sundays rotating location every week between our 7 houses. The host makes dinner and every one chips in with a side or a drink or something if needed. Some of us have kids and they all play together while we play. Game starts at 3, dinner is when we all get hungry and then we usually finish up around 8ish so the parents can get kids home to bed and everyone can get up for work on Monday.

Game of choice at the moment? Dungeons and Dragons

Amazing how much fun and relaxing a good role playing game can be :D"

"My mom has played Bunco once a month since the early eighties with the same core group of women. I really want to start it with our friends, now that we're "grown up" and settled."
