Thrifty Treasures: Bread Slicer

I have been looking for a good bread slicer since I started using my bread machine more regularly. I thought it would be nice to be able to make clean & crisp slices of bread, instead of my uneven pieces that I was cutting freehand. I wanted slices that were even, particularly for the sandwiches we were eating out of the loaves.

Lucky for me, someone donated their bread slicer and I was able to snatch it up for $2.50. It was priced at $5.00, but thanks to our local Goodwill Booster Club program, I was able to use my fifty percent off coupon for their member rewards weekend. This is a really great model because it folds down completely flat for easy storage. With kitchen space at a premium in our house, I look for items that can be stored easily while using a minimal amount of space.

If you happen to live in Michiana, you can sign up for their Goodwill Booster Club program for $5 for an entire year. Now through Sunday, they will give you a fifty percent off coupon that day (off of your total order) and then you will get a coupon for each month for an entire year for that $5 investment. Each year the coupons have changed so I am not sure what this round of coupons offers, but no matter what you will definitely get your five dollar investment back (and then some!) I have done the program for three years now and it has saved our family a lot of money.

Does anyone else use one of these types of bread slicers? What do you think?

"I was blessed with a set of 2 "The Magic Knife" like:

I LOVE them. The only thing remotely close to what you have that I have is a bagel slicer. Like that as well, and my bagel slicer works well for homemade burger buns too. Doncha just LOVE kitchen gadgets? I sure do! Have fun with your new bread slicer thing!!"

"I never even thought of buying one, but now I really want one, I hate when I make uneven slices. I'll have to see if a local thrift store has one."

"My dad got me this fancy knife for my birthday several years ago. He likes gadgety things; I wouldn't have bought it for myself, given the price. But I love it. Not only is it a great quality knife, you can slice the bread very, very thin or thick, depending on your mood. When I've brought homemade bread to work in my lunch, coworkers have commented on how beautifully sliced my bread is."

"I too have the same bread maker as Amy. I have used it for 5-6 years and it still works well. Do you use an electric knife when cutting your bread? I have found this is the best way to get even slices."

"Oh my goodness. Is THAT what that is??!! I found one in our home when we moved here and couldn't figure out what to do with it. I either pitched it or sent it to Goodwill. Wow - who knew?! (apparently not me)"

"You know, I don't have an electric knife, but I am sure that would make my life a little easier. I will have to add that to my Christmas list or keep my eyes peeled at the thrift store. We bought a cheap one, when we were first married, and I didn't like it at all. There was a button that I had to hold down while slicing the entire time. The placement was really awkward.

Kara- I saw these on Ebay, as well, if you can't locate them in your store. Just sure under the brand name on the box and you will see a whole bunch of cool bread gadgets!!

Now I am going to go check out your links for knives, girls!"

"I love my bread machine but part of my love centers around being able to slice huge honking slices of bread :)

I don't know that I'd want a thin slicer :) THough it might help my waistline."

"I've had this exact same one (the slicer) for years, sitting there, and used it once, maybe? LOL

Do you like it? I think I might have tried it the first time, when the bread was warm, and it was very awkward and not cutting that great. Then again, it could have been the knife not being great either. :)

I'm with the person who likes the big hunks of bread, although it's not the best for your figure, eh? lol"

"I actually do love it! I do prefer a big hunk of bread with my dinner, but it is great for cutting even slices for sandwiches. If the bread is too hot though, it just mushes and you end up with some weird slicing. Maybe that was why?? Isn't it funny how many people already have this? :)"
