"Okay, here's mine...it is about $80 in the Spring and Fall when we are using neither the heat or our window air conditioners. In the summer usually about $115 and in the winter at the coldest $180. We have electric heat and our basement is the biggest heat expense."

"hey Amy, I'm in eastern Ky and my electric bill is usually around $60 in the summer. Imagine my shock yesterday morning when I opened my bill and it was $95. ($79 before they started adding those little miscellanous fees and charges)
I also would appreciate anybody's suggestions on how to lower it. We don't have central air and only one window air conditioner on the shady side of the house. We open the windows in the evening and let the cool air in and shut them back each morning."

"Hi Amy, I live in north west new jersey. It is a more rural/country area on the delaware river. We have electric heat and and a woodburning stove in our basement that we bought new about a year ago. Our electric bill is about $150-175 in the Spring and Fall and $175-250 in summer and winter. One tip I can give is if you have multiple computers and printers in your house, make sure you turn them all off when not in use. We saved between $5-$10 a month by doing this. (my dh works from home, so we have more computers than the average family). If anyone has any other tips for my family that would be great. It has been really hot here already this year and we have had to use our a/c quite a bit."

"Well, here in northern WI, we have budget billing (gas + electric combined, payments thru the year). But our costs are about $90 year round. We have an electric water heater and dryer. We did switch over to fluorescent bulbs which seems to help some. Also, turning off our computers on the weekends or at night shaves off a little, too. Too bad it's so hot right now and we have to run the A/C all the time!!! :("

"I live in East Texas and have a total electric house. I do electric averaging on my bill and pay around $140 per month. I have reduced it quite a bit by turning off my computer when it is not in use, putting the thermostat on $cost setting which set it up/down 5 degrees when I go to work, I have wrapped the hot water heater, I unplug anything we are not using at the moment, and need to re-calc which is one of the best savings of all."

"I'm in NJ
Our bill can be up around $150 in the summer but about $50 in the winter.

I try to line dry all of our clothes in the summer and part of them in the winter. I also just started completely powering down my computer stuff and entertainment system every night. I heard that even those little standby lights drain power when they are turned off."

"Hi Amy...
I'm in RI, and so far this year, my monthly electric bill has been around $50.00. I line dry all my clothes, have replaced almost all my bulbs with CFL's, and make an effort not to leave appliances on. My next step is to reroute most of my electrical equipment (pc, tv's, cable, etc) through power strips, and turn those off at the end of the day to avoid phantom electric usage. Can't wait to see how that affects the bill!"

"OK, I'm embarrassed to say, we're on budget billing and paying $70 for electric and $81 for gas. These should both go down next year as we have a credit on both accounts. We have the CFL lights. One thing I know we need to do is more weather stripping around our doors! I LOVE our programmable thermostat, but we should have paid the extra amount for the 7-day programmable instead of 5+2.

"Wow, great freebies! :)

I have no idea what our a/c bill is because Hubs is in charge of that shizzle. I know, I suck, right?"

"These answers are really interesting! It is fun to compare and see all of your tips for keeping the electric bill down!

I am in IN and we are on the monthly budget plan. This past year, they budgeted $70 each month and I just had our anniversary and it went up to $75.

We open windows in the evening, line dry all of our clothing (during the warmer months), and are gradually replacing light bulbs with CFL bulbs. We also have a programmable thermostat, but we aren't able to do much during the day because I stay home with the kids....

Thanks for all of your responses! I will have to think of a good question for next week!"

"I'm in Southwestern PA. Our electric Bill is about $85/mth. We live in a townhouse - no central air, just one window unit, and need new windows. Tips? Unplug appliances that aren't being used. Use energy efficient light bulbs."

"I'm amazed at how low some of your bills are. Amy, do you run A/C at all in the summer?"

at 8:01 AM

Blogger Amy
"Yes, I actually do run the a/c, but try to avoid it when I can. If at all possible, I just keep the windows open. I couldn't survive without my air conditioning though. I grew up in a house where you wanted to wear your winter clothing during the summer because my dad liked to keep the house nice and cool :) I know some people do much better than me though. I can't handle it if it gets over 75 degrees."

"Amy, I know you're on the budget plan for electric. What, in general, are your actual bills like during the summer months? And, how much do you think line drying your clothes vs. using the dryer contributes to your bill?"
