It's Not What You Know, It's Who You Know

Everyone knows someone who knows something. That something could be as simple as how to get a stain out of clothing or it could be as complex as the types of supplements you should be taking for optimum health.

I have a theory that everyone carries around one piece of information that has stuck with them from an expert in a field. Maybe it was your vet? Maybe your doctor? Maybe you are close friends with a nutritionist? Maybe you have a really good accountant who gave you some tax advice that you never forgot?

What is one piece of advice you got that you never lost? Your piece of advice could be life changing for one of our readers. Please share away by clicking the Comments link.

My one piece of advice that I received, while not life-saving, is one thing that has always stuck with me. One of my friends went to visit a dermatologist and she asked her what was the best thing that she could do for her skin. The dermatologist suggested to always, always moisturize her neck because it is one of those areas that many people forget. That is why you see many women with beautiful skin and they show their age in their neck area. She also said the best type of facial cleanser you can use is Cetaphil. I have discovered that our local Meijer sells an off-brand of Cetaphil and I have started using this on my skin. It is much cheaper & gentler than other things I have tried.

Not everyone can afford the luxury of expert health. Many people cannot even afford the insurance needed to ever sit down with an expert. Likewise, many of us have the financial means to employ someone to help us through tough situations. Do you have a lawyer, a doctor, a financial planner, a counselor for your child?

What was that one piece of advice that they shared with you that you could, in turn, share with someone else?

"One thing that stuck with me (I don't even remember where I heard it) was, Our Grandmas didn't have WalMart.
The point being, if you are out of money or simply out of a cleaning product, ingredient for a recipe, etc., stop and remember that our habit of convenience of running to the store is modern. In the "olden days" they managed to shop once a week, or go to town once a month. Stop and think "what would grandma do" and it will get you out of a lot of jams!

"I recently read the same thing about Cetaphil. And that's awesome b/c it is available almost anywhere. My question is, does Cetaphil make a moisturizer, too? Or just a cleanser?"

"yes, they actually do make a moisturizer. One is a thinner type lotion and one is a thick heavy one. I use the thinner lotion because the other one seems a bit too heavy for my face and it works great. Meijer also had an off-brand of that. It is great stuff! This type comes in a pump versus the jar of heavy moisurizer."

"Our childbirth teachers told us "Everything is a phase." in regards to children. I have made that my mantra through colic, sleep issues and now teething. It is reassuring that the bad parts don't last forever. Also a reminder to cherish the sweet moments 'cause they are fleeting too."

"Someone once told me that "Anything worth having is worth sacrificing for." This helps me through the more difficult sacrifices I make for the benefit of my family.
Here's a piece of advice I give to my sons, "Lead by example." Of course, this is usually said in a pleading voice at the grocery store when the boys are wreaking havoc, and I'm trying to solicit help from the older ones. It's still poignant, in general.
Lastly, (this is more of a life's lesson than advice) when the boys are at each other's throats, I occasionally ask them, "What's the greatest gift Mommy and Daddy ever gave to you?" Their response (with a roll of the eyes), "My brothers." That's one lesson I hope they hold on to."

"My piece of advice comes from my MIL. She has a degree in and teaches family, home and consumer sciences. She also raised four kids who have all turned out pretty great! She said that when your child throws a tantrum to COMPLETELY ignore it. Some kids will even hold their breath for attention. They won't seriously hurt themselves and when they pass out from holding their breath, they will start to breathe again and be just fine. My son (4) threw some whopper tantrums and we just ignore them or laugh at him. He is a great little boy. I also have an 18 month old, so we'll see where the theory takes us with her..."

"I'd heard the same thing about the skin on your neck, that it typically looks ten years older than the skin on your face because of neglect.

Advice? Gosh, it's so hard to come up with it without a memory prompter.

My Dad always says that if you have a problem that can be fixed with money then it's not really a problem.

I guess he means that those kinds of problems are usually within the realm of control to fix. Not like losing a spouse or divorce or any number of bad things that happen to people."

"Best advice is be wary of children who act out, are shy, and having a lot of problems. There is a good chance they are being abused. That abuser is most likely someone you know and trust. Even might be in your own family. Kids aren't naturally bad, they are acting out and you've got to get to the root cause. Trust your instincts and protect all children.

"My sister and I are 18 months apart and when we were kids we would fight without pause. My father (who was one of 11 children) used to always say to us, "Friends may come and go, but your sister is forever." When we were teenagers, I never thought I'd see the day when we would be as close as we are now. I see her everyday without fail and we talk on the phone and never seem to run out of subjects. It's funny how your parents know what they're talking about after all!"

"A nutritionist once told me that pizza is one of the greatest combination foods. It has grains (dough), vegetables (tomato sauce, whatever veggies you put in it), dairy (cheese), and meat. I've never forgotten that and bring it up to mind evertime that I eat it."

"I just wanted to add to my comment about tantrums that you have to make sure that the kid can't hurt themselves before you ignore them!"
