Stranger Things Couple's Costume

We hope you have a wonderful Halloween! I can’t tell you how much I love dressing up for Halloween with this guy, but I feel like this year wins all the years. We are a bit Stranger Things obsessed this year so this costume was so much fun to put together. If you haven’t dove into the series, may this costume inspire you to look into this show. You will not regret it!

Barb, Stranger Things

We didn’t want to be basic with this costume (it was swinging in that direction after all my traveling) so Ryan suggested that he go as Barb.

Maybe you don’t remember Barb. No one seemed to care about her. She was the fallen hero in this show. Everyone is crying over Will and poor Barb goes missing and no one hardly notices.

Barb Missing

Barb Missing

My husband put together a Barb costume that made me laugh all evening long. He actually designed a Trapper Keeper cover for an old binder and we blouse shopped for DAYS to get the right ruffled blouse. An old pair of jeans for snow plowing made the perfect “mom jeans” and he snagged some glasses on Amazon for his look.

My old Thelma & Louise wig from a Halloween past (doesn’t everyone have an entire bin of wigs laying around in their house?) was hacked down to a Barb length.

In short, he NAILED IT!

Eleven, Stranger Things

Eleven, Stranger Things

Eleven, Stranger Things

Eleven’s dress was almost impossible to find. We walked the malls for days, found a poor substitute for a dress, and sat down in the food court with our kids to tell them about our terrible luck. That is when Emily (who has NEVER SEEN THE SHOW, but I am sure has photographic memory) said that she thought she saw the dress we were after in Hot Topic while her and her brother were shopping.

After we got over the shock that our kids were walking around Hot Topic while we were dress shopping, we ran into the store and she was absolutely right.

It was the real Eleven dress.

I borrowed her blue rain jacket, we sprung for another wig for the wig box, bought some waffles, and I rocked my husband’s socks and a pair of sneakers.

We both debated on the blood and leeches bit. You totally could do that too!

I hope you will indulge me and let me reminisce about our other couple’s costumes for a bit…

Every year is my favorite year and this is no exception. I hope you have a fun Halloween!!

And if you need a good laugh, here is a video for you. If you were wondering, this was my first glass of wine. Can you just imagine how much my dancing improved after that? 🙂

No-Sew Scarf With Hidden Pocket

No-Sew Scarf With Hidden Pocket from MomAdvice.com

This post is sponsored by Ever. All thoughts and opinions are my own!

There is a lot of pressure, as a mom, to capture all of these precious moments that we get to experience with our kids. I am never without my phone for this very reason. Today’s craft is something I have had brewing in my head for years, but didn’t think I could easily execute it. I am so excited because I’m showing off an EASY DIY no-sew scarf that you can create that has a hidden pocket so you have your phone with you at all times.  Since I am constantly taking pictures of my kids, I love having the Ever app for all of those moments!

Not only am I showing off this scarf, but I’m also showing off this INCREDIBLE (and I mean it!!) phone app called Ever that you can use to backup all your photos, saving you precious room on your phone so you never get that pesky message that forces you to remove so many of those special memories.

No-Sew Scarf With Hidden Pocket from MomAdvice.com

No-Sew Scarf With Hidden Pocket from MomAdvice.com

Let me explain a little bit about Ever and why you should be using it!  This app automatically (and securely) collects and organizes your photos and videos from everywhere they live. You may not realize how many places you are taking photos, but Ever does. It grabs all the photos from your camera roll, social media accounts, emails, and texts then catalogs them for you in the correct order so you can quickly make photo albums in just minutes. The best part is that it keeps all my photos safe and encrypted so that I can rest knowing that my family’s  meaningful moments are only for me!

This year I decided to get an iPhone with less storage because I thought it would help hold me more accountable to deleting and only keeping what is precious on my phone. My minimalist attitude makes me feel passionately about things like this, but I quickly realized the error of my minimalist ways.

I constantly had messages that the storage was full and then I would have a daily Sophie’s Choice moment where I was forced to choose the images that were most precious.

It’s no way to live, friends.

Ever iPhone App

When Ever reached out, I couldn’t believe how much one app could help my life so much. No more warnings and  tough decisions on what to keep because this app automatically frees space on your phone and backs up all those precious moments so you don’t have to.

Ever is also like hiring a personal organizer who can make sense of all your visual clutter and package it up in a way that finally makes sense.  I, honestly, never make the time to sort and organize photos, but this app is intuitive enough that it can do it for you automatically. No more excuses to not share those memories with grandma now that Ever is doing the hard part.

It also makes adorable albums that allow you to time travel and reminiscent about the good ol’ days with your kiddos.

Ever iPhone App

Oh, and did I mention that the app is FREE? Yup, unlimited free storage with security for all of your precious photos.

Dang, that’s a lot cheaper than buying an iPhone with more storage.

I might be able to help my kids with tuition after all!

For those of you who want your pictures backed up in full resolution, Ever Plus is also available by monthly subscription for $9.99 — or you can use their optional referral program to earn free credits for this full-res storage by sending invitations to your friends. Not to worry though, you can use all the other features without signing up for Ever Plus, thanks Ever!

Ever iPhone App

Please download the app right now- it’s a game-changer for sharing, printing, and storing all of those sweet memories. I promise you won’t regret it! I know I’m looking forward to our upcoming holiday even more because I can make an album of all our memories so quickly and easily. No more excuses for not getting these printed!

In honor of this app, today’s DIY is a scarf that offers a hidden pocket so you never miss (or lose) a photo opportunity again!

No-Sew Scarf With Hidden Pocket from MomAdvice.com

Supplies Needed

2 yards knit sweatshirt material (you need the material to be thick enough to hide the pocket! This price is EXCELLENT- I paid $10 a yard at my local craft store)

1-2 yards tassel trim (I find the most affordable trims over here)

Coin Purse large enough to hold your phone (this is the style I purchased. As you can see, the bottom is not completely flat, but it was the ideal size for my phone), alternatively you could purchase an all purpose zipper and craft a pocket out of the scraps from your scarf

Hemming Tape– 1 roll is plenty!!

Scissors or Rotary Cutter

Tape Measure

Thread to match material

Your Favorite Scarf as a Guide For Width & Length

No-Sew Scarf With Hidden Pocket from MomAdvice.com

Directions

1. First, find your favorite scarf in your closet and use this as a guide for the length and width of your scarf. The reason I am not telling you my scarf length is because I am a wee woman and my favorite scarf length might look silly on you. Do note that the width does need to be wide enough to completely hide that pocket. I actually love a wide  scarf that mimics the coziness of my favorite blanket scarves so I made mine very generous in width- it’s so wide that it can almost double as a shawl.  Cut the material to the same width and length, doubling up the fabric so that you have two pieces that are exactly the same size.

No-Sew Scarf With Hidden Pocket from MomAdvice.com

2. Take the two pieces of material and have the pretty side facing each other so the ugly side of the fabric is on the outside of both pieces.

No-Sew Scarf With Hidden Pocket from MomAdvice.com

No-Sew Scarf With Hidden Pocket from MomAdvice.com

3. Between these two pieces, you are going to be lining up your hemming tape. Use your wallet as a guide for where to start and stop the hemming tape, on one side, making sure that you have a little edge of the fabric above it (like I have show in the first picture) so you can fold it in a bit to support that pocket.

No-Sew Scarf With Hidden Pocket from MomAdvice.com

4. Use your iron to iron the whole side of the scarf, taking your time so that you can make sure you have a good seal on the fabric. Repeat this process on the other side, but make sure to run the hemming tape all down it, unlike the other side where we made a space for our pocket. This takes time so be patient. This material is a little thick so you may need to go over it a few times to seal it fully.

No-Sew Scarf With Hidden Pocket from MomAdvice.com

5. Flip the scarf out and then, slip the wallet inside. You are going to need to fold that hem back a bit to line up with where the hemming tape was so you don’t have a raw edge hanging out. Using a needle and thread stitch it into the material (I know I said NO SEW, but we do want that pocket in there nicely. Alternatively, you could try fabric glue, but I think it won’t be as secure!).

No-Sew Scarf With Hidden Pocket from MomAdvice.com

6. Fold in the rough edges of the scarf and slip a strip of hemming tape between these two folded sides. Take your time and seal this to finish the construction of the scarf.

No-Sew Scarf With Hidden Pocket from MomAdvice.com

7. Finish with a strip of trim on the front of the scarf (make sure you know where your pocket is before you are adding the trim). I am only trimming the front of the scarf so I can remember where my pocket is! You can definitely add more trim all the way around or anywhere else you would like to trim it. If you have a grosgrain trim like I do, take a lighter and pass it quickly over the two sides of the ends of your trim to seal both sides so it doesn’t come unraveled. Another alternative for sealing the edges is a little fray check- I’ll let you pick! To finish,  I slipped hemming tape under the trim and then used this, once again, to secure it by ironing it in place. Repeat on the other side of the scarf.

I am already dreaming up ways that I can make these for holiday gifts for others and no one will ever know that I didn’t whip out a sewing machine for this craft. Wouldn’t this be such a great gift even for your kiddos to tuck their hat and gloves in? I’m thinking of pairing one of these for my daughter with knitted ear warmers for the pocket. It could even be made more masculine in a beautiful plaid fabric, just like my DIY blanket scarves, for the men in your life.

Honestly, I can’t think of anyone who couldn’t use a scarf with a pocket. Can you?

I hope you find today’s DIY inspiring and I hope you also have a blast getting those photos organized, backed-up, and printed for your family this year, thanks to Ever.

Fall/Winter 2106 Fashion Capsule Wardrobe

Fall/Winter 2106 Fashion Capsule Wardrobe from MomAdvice.com

October means it is time for another capsule wardrobe and I’m excited to reveal my capsule wardrobe to you today. If you have been contemplating a capsule wardrobe, I would love to encourage you to give a try this fall. For me, fall and winter are the easier of the planning seasons. Plus, who doesn’t love cozy sweaters and warm layering?

The number of items has shifted, but only to make room for the two seasons. Pieces will be switched around as the weather gets cooler and requires heavier layers. I allow myself flexibility and also love to request a few key pieces as holiday gifts to keep the wardrobe fresh.

I decided to start a SEPARATE Instagram account for my capsule since it feels like two separate audiences. This account is only about fashion & the capsule. You can follow me here (@momadvicecapsule) or if you just want the general usual odds & ends, you can follow me here (@momadvice). I hope that makes sense!

Let’s talk about this 2016 fall & winter capsule wardrobe.

First, What is a Fashion Capsule & Why Should You Do One?

A capsule wardrobe is a collection of clothing which is designed using only interchangeable items, in order to maximize the number of outfits which can be created. The aim is to have an outfit suitable for any occasion without owning excessive items of clothing. This is usually achieved by buying what are considered to be “key” or “staple” items in coordinating colors.

The reason I think capsule wardrobes are worth exploring is that you realize when you have LESS in your closet you can do MORE with what you have. My closet used to be bursting at the seams with clothes and, what I like to call, one-trick-pony apparel. I felt put together after tearing up my room and trying to build outfits in the process, but it took me so long to get ready in the mornings and I never felt like I had a truly seamless style. Narrowing my wardrobe down to 33 items as outlined in Project 333 was just what I needed to make mornings less stressful and finding a real rhythm to getting dressed for the day. It’s been a beautiful shift in my life and I don’t think I could ever go back to the old ways of bursting closets and pointless purchases.

Fall/Winter 2106 Fashion Capsule Wardrobe from MomAdvice.com

(check out how I’m styling my pieces this year over here and here!)

I tend to be a pretty colorful person so you will find color mixed in with basics in my wardrobe. Monochromatic isn’t my thing, but can be yours if you are trying to simplify your wardrobe. Many people begin their capsule experience very monochromatic and then find they are comfortable branching out into color after figuring out how to make everything work together.

Capsule Wardrobe Colors

What Trends Did You Embrace For Fall/Winter?

The past couple of years my color scheme has leaned more into the red, white, & blue that feels very nautical and timeless to me. This year I wanted to warm things up so I am selecting a few pieces in wine, rose, mustard yellow, & navy. These colors are folded into my basic neutral scheme (gray, black, cream) for the year.

I love how these colors can be mixed and matched together.

I also love the pink hues since I love a more feminine touch to my wardrobe.

Get some inspiration for creating and styling your capsule by following my Capsule Pinterest Board!

Why My Capsule Shouldn’t Be YOUR Capsule

I show you my capsule mainly as some sort of accountability, but not necessarily for you to copy it. My style is probably not your style and that is okay. Your capsule can look nothing like my capsule. Your body shape could be different from mine and none of these cuts of clothing or ideas will work for you. When creating your capsule, create it around what you feel most confident in.

I suggest peeking in your closet and selecting what makes you feel beautiful and start your planning around those pieces.

That’s been the best place to start for me.

Do Accessories Count in the Capsule?

One question I get asked is if I count accessories and shoes as my items. I do not, but feel free to do that if you like. For me a scarf, belt, or great jewelry really do add to the enjoyment and experience of my wardrobe. I am, however, more selective about the accessories I am choosing and really making sure that they are worth the space in my drawers and the money that is spent.

What Are the Rules for a Capsule Wardrobe?

Here are my modified Project 333 rules or you can go to Courtney’s website to read more about the official guidelines!

One Piece, Many Ways: Making the Most of Your Capsule Wardrobe

One Piece, Many Ways- Make the Most of a Capsule Wardrobe from MomAdvice.com

Last week I talked about how to shop for a capsule wardrobe on a small budget and shared some of my favorite finds with you from the big box stores. Boutique options often feel out of our price range and, in my experience, sometimes feel like one trick ponies. I am partnering up with a local business, Ali on the Boulevard, to showcase items that you can get LOTS of wear out of and the highest priced item is just $38, keeping you right within your budget. Once you see all the ways that you can style these, I know that you will see how versatile they are for your wardrobe and the diversity in these pieces.

All items are available for shipping to you and online so you can take advantage of these pieces no matter where you live.

Let’s get started!

One Piece, Many Ways- Make the Most of a Capsule Wardrobe from MomAdvice.com

wrap dress, (ali on the boulevard), nude heels (similar, target), burgundy bubble necklace (similar, kohls), faux tan legs (amazon), bralette (ali on the boulevard)

Wrap Dress Style #1

If you are looking for an alternative to your little black dress, I found this gray heathered wrap dress (did you see she named it after me- awww!!)  in an a-line cut that makes a great substitute. Wrap dresses, as long as I have been around, never go out of style and are a fun piece to accessorize with. The material is very soft and feels like a nightgown. I am wearing a Small and I find this to just fit. I would size up one in this one!

Ali advised wearing this with a bralette. You know that I have preached and preached that Coobi bras are the next best thing to sliced bread, but I did hear from you that some of you can’t pull it off without support (LUCKY DUCKS!). Her shop offers bralettes that are not padded and can be worn with your regular bra, offering the support you need, without the bulk, seam, or annoying roll-up of a cami.

Cami rolls are the worst.

This first look is a great look for a nice dinner out or for church!

One Piece, Many Ways- Make the Most of a Capsule Wardrobe from MomAdvice.com

wrap dress, (ali on the boulevard), flannel shirt (similar, j. crew), tassel booties– your feet will say thank you over and over again (tom’s), zodiac necklace (ali on the boulevard)

Wrap Dress Style #2

Here is the same dress, but now I am wearing it like a skirt, a trick anyone with a capsule wardrobe is doing on repeat in their wardrobe! I tucked the tie inside the shirt and tied the hem of my flannel shirt. I am wearing a J. Crew factory flannel in an XS and I can’t rave enough on how well this washes and the fit on this shirt. You will get lots of wear out of that piece too!  This didn’t need a lot of accessorizing so I went with a small zodiac necklace from the shop. You can see a close-up on my IG feed.

One Piece, Many Ways- Make the Most of a Capsule Wardrobe from MomAdvice.com

wrap dress, (ali on the boulevard), mustard cardigan– (h&m), burgundy tights (target), tan boots (thredup)

Wrap Dress Style #3

Dresses can still look cozy especially when paired with a longer cardigan, boots, and tights. I tied the tie towards the back so you wouldn’t have it hanging out in the front. This is a great look to look dressier, but still super comfy for your day. If you haven’t discovered fleece tights, get some for winter. You can find them even at Walmart now!

One Piece, Many Ways- Make the Most of a Capsule Wardrobe from MomAdvice.com

wrap dress, (ali on the boulevard), burgundy cardigan– (h&m), burgundy tights (target), tan boots (thredup), gray & white rose patterned scarf- check out her scarf collection (ali on the boulevard),  belt (similar, target)

Wrap Dress Styling #4

Indiana can get chilly so I do a lot of scarves and sweater layerings to fight off the cold. This time I am just doing tone on tone. Gray dress, gray scarf, burgundy cardigan, burgundy tights. Adding a belt makes this feel more like a skirt again!

One Piece, Many Ways- Make the Most of a Capsule Wardrobe from MomAdvice.com

wrap dress, (ali on the boulevard), jean vest (thredup– here is a similar one on budget) , burgundy tights (target), tan boots (thredup), pearls (similar, target)

Wrap Dress Styling #5

Jean vests are such a versatile piece so I am excited to add that to the capsule this year. A bib necklace of pearls adds a feminine touch to the denim and, once again, it’s all layered over that basic wrap dress!

5 Ways to Wear a Wrap Dress from MomAdvice.com

Here is a side-by-side shot if you prefer pinning that way! Can you believe that is the same wrap dress?

One Piece, Many Ways- Make the Most of a Capsule Wardrobe from MomAdvice.com

rust sweater– olive in stock and rust returning!! (ali on the boulevard), black pants with zipper detail (ali on the boulevard), long & short necklaces (ali on the boulevard),  world’s comfiest leopard flats (Amazon), bralette (ali on the boulevard)

Oversized Sweater Styling #1

Ponchos and capes are so fun, but can be a PAIN to stay on and the fabric can be a lot to maneuver on a petite frame. I find the ones without arm holes to be distracting and the ones with arm holes to limit my range of motion. I also hate doing chores around the house with a lot of fabric on me. I am PARTICULAR.  This sweater has the shape of a cape, but is a sweater with sleeves. Ali has these in a few color options for you. I am wearing the Rust colored one and a size Small. This fits true to size!

In this styling I am pairing these very simply with a basic black pant, leopard slip-ons, and a long & short simple necklace.

One Piece, Many Ways- Make the Most of a Capsule Wardrobe from MomAdvice.com

rust sweater (ali on the boulevard), black pants with zipper detail (ali on the boulevard), long & short necklaces and bracelet- shop the collection (ali on the boulevard),  world’s comfiest leopard flats (Amazon), belt (similar, target), bralette (ali on the boulevard)

Oversized Sweater Styling #2

I prefer a cinched waist so this is the same styling, just with a belt. I think it gives it a totally different look without a lot of style switches.

One Piece, Many Ways- Make the Most of a Capsule Wardrobe from MomAdvice.com

rust sweater (ali on the boulevard), black pants with zipper detail (ali on the boulevard), world’s comfiest black flats (Amazon), mustard scarf (anthro from thredup, linking to similar) mustard belt (j. crew from thredup, linking to similar)

Oversized Sweater Styling #2

I like color so I have lots of colored belts and scarves to dress up my wardrobe basics. Adding a colored belt and scarf makes this sweater feel like a different piece. You could also chose just one or the other instead of layering on both!

One Piece, Many Ways- Make the Most of a Capsule Wardrobe from MomAdvice.com

rust sweater (ali on the boulevard), black pants with zipper detail (ali on the boulevard), black bralette (ali on the boulevard), tan boots (thredup), mint statement necklace (similar), bralette (ali on the boulevard)

Oversized Sweater Styling #3

You know when you see pictures of women wearing capes and gazing at their cell phones while holding tiny dogs in their purses? I feel like this is tiny dog in a purse style and I don’t even like dogs. #teamcats!! You can pick a statement necklace in any color and make this look a little different. The best part is how comfy this is while still looking polished.

4 Ways to Wear an Oversized Sweater

Here is a side-by-side shot if you prefer pinning that way! I LOVE this piece!

One Piece, Many Ways- Make the Most of a Capsule Wardrobe from MomAdvice.com

textured printed t-shirt (ali on the boulevard),  Just Black black jeans (Stitch Fix), Moccasins (Kenneth Cole, Stitch Fix).  chevron necklace (francesca’s)

Plain tees can get a little boring so I was excited to find this t-shirt because the cut is really flattering (and comes in a curvy size too for my curvier friends-holla!). The best part about  this piece is that the front is as cute as the back. This shirt runs true to size and I am wearing a small!

One Piece, Many Ways- Make the Most of a Capsule Wardrobe from MomAdvice.com

Hard to show you the back so this is the best I could pull off, but you can see it MUCH better on her site. Isn’t that cute?

T-Shirt Styling #1

This is a great mom uniform- a cute t-shirt, black jeans, and suede moccasins. I am still madly in love with my chevron necklace and this looks great with this shirt. This is a great outfit for running my kids back and forth to activities.

One Piece, Many Ways- Make the Most of a Capsule Wardrobe from MomAdvice.com

textured printed t-shirt (ali on the boulevard), suede booties(similar, old navy), rose jeans (similar, 6PM), jeweled statement necklace (similar, romwe)

T-Shirt Styling #2

Colored jeans can be fun and I love pairing this with my rose jeans. Suede booties and a statement necklace in similar tones completes this look and makes it a fun one to go out on the town with!

One Piece, Many Ways- Make the Most of a Capsule Wardrobe from MomAdvice.com

textured printed t-shirt (ali on the boulevard), black pants with zipper detail (ali on the boulevard),  Madden Girl Open Toe Booties (similar, Macy’s), mustard tassel clutch (similar, cotton on), fringe necklace (WALMART!!, but linking to similar)

T-Shirt Styling #3

Tees don’t always feel like great going out choices, but I have found with the right accessories, they can feel quite dressy. This bib necklace made of fringe was a $4 find from Walmart that I still love. Paired with black pants, booties, and a bright clutch, this would make the perfect sushi date outfit with my hubby!

textured printed t-shirt (ali on the boulevard), black pants with zipper detail (ali on the boulevard), black cardigan (h&m), tan boots (thredup), red skinny belt (target), pearl necklace (ali on the boulevard)

T-Shirt Styling #4

I feel like I could style this shirt and pants the very next day and no one would even know this was the same shirt and pants! Layering a neutral cardigan over it and cinching the tee waist with a skinny belt adds a totally different look. It hides the pattern, making this feel like a different piece.

4 Ways to Wear a Tee

Here is another side by side for you! I love the versatility of this piece!

4 Ways to Wear Black Leggings

You may not have noticed that these pants are on repeat too. Did you catch that? If you are looking for something that fits like a legging, but offers support and doesn’t pill, these are an EXCELLENT option.  On me, they sit above the belly button and are full length. For taller girls, this might have a cropped affect (LUCKY LADIES!!).  The shot all the way to the right is how I folded them inside themselves so they would look more cropped.

One Piece, Many Ways- Make the Most of a Capsule Wardrobe from MomAdvice.com My favorite part is the zippered detail on the side. How cute is that? These fit true to size and have faux pockets on the back that make them look like a pant (without the bulk of a pocket), but offer an elastic waistband. I know I will be wearing these all the time and I am told that they wash like a dream. I still would wear something with full butt coverage over them, personally (elderly hipster!), but I like that they look like a structured traditional pant instead of tights.

Street Sneaks for $26!!

You might be surprised to know that I wear my sneakers A LOT. These pants pair perfectly with sneakers. My favorite classic New Balance  sneakers are always in rotation, but I know those can be a little pricey. Ali actually sells these adorable sneakers for $26 (!!!), that look so stylish and are surprisingly comfortable. I have a wide foot and this is wide enough for my block feet. These only come in whole sizes. I teeter between a 7 and a 7.5, but the 7’s still had plenty of toe room for me! There was no need to break these in- I never had a blister. You can’t beat that price for an attractive street sneaker.

I can’t wait to hear what you think of these looks AND I hope you can help me support a small business owner. This is a great opportunity to help a woman owned business succeed & stock smart basics in your capsule!

fall-capsule-wardrobe-ideas

I promised to take you on the journey from start to finish on planning a capsule wardrobe. I shared my possible contenders (that link is where you can read more about what a capsule wardrobe is!) and I wanted to share with you the fit on these items as well as my thoughts on some other pieces that I picked up. Since this is my first time doing this, I would SO appreciate your feedback if this helps you with your own wardrobe planning.

A Little About Me

Before I begin I want to let you know that I am merely remarking on quality and best buys for your buck and not what you should or shouldn’t wear.  If you need help picking out clothes for YOU please take this course. It is an amazing class and will help you pick the right fit and look for your own body type.

If I were forced to classify my own style it would be Elderly Hipster with a lean towards classic lines.

Oh, you haven’t heard of Elderly Hipster?

It means I might lean in a bit to boho or retro, but you won’t catch me back in overalls. It means I lean towards classics with clean lines so I find things like distressed jeans to be distressing and patterned leggings to be pajamas. I also feel weird about the exposed shoulder trend especially the weird cut-out shoulders. I can’t do it.

I like them for you, but not for me.

I normally don’t purchase as much, but I got pretty sick this year and my clothes are not fitting right anymore. I haven’t really felt like myself and have been lacking a bit of confidence because, to me, I look worn down and sick. It sucks. Instead of trying to tie up skirts and pants and knotting/belting/zip tying all the things to make them have shape around me, I bought some things and am putting clothes away until I look like my old self again.

I used you as an excuse to shop though so I hope that’s okay.

It’s been a hard year and I want to feel like myself again.

A Little About You

Since many of the items have an affiliate link (something I try to always disclose), I am able to get a good snapshot of what you guys like. What I can see from these reports is that you love a good deal from familiar stores like Old Navy and LOFT. I can also see that you are willing to invest in quality staples to round out your purchases like a good pair of jeans. One of the top things you are buying are these ballet flats, for example, which tells me you value quality and comfort like I do.

Maybe your style is Elderly Hipster too?

Boutique is also okay, but it must be classic, made well, and affordable. I partnered up with Ali On The Boulevard and we worked together to come up with affordable capsule options that have longevity from her store. I wanted to work locally so I could actually feel and see the items for you, not just act like I knew if it was good or not. I even stood there while she called every supplier too to make sure you guys could purchase any of the pieces and everything that is featured you will be able to order. The highest price item is $38 and most sit in the $25-33 range. I hope this will add to your enjoyment of capsule shopping. I will be sharing these items with you next week (along with HOPEFULLY some of the items that have not arrived yet)  and the accessories/shoes that I found to compliment them.

I had also made a commitment to embrace secondhand, but the feedback I got from you is that, while this was certainly inspiring, it made it hard to replicate. Not everyone desires the thrill of the hunt like I do. Many of you signed up with thredUP, but maybe got lost or overwhelmed along the way.  This time I wanted to show you smart purchases, but I also spent some time looking at your purchase history to make sure it fell in line with what you buy.

You guys had mixed feelings about Stitch Fix and I did too. I had some credit sitting in my account so I thought I would give it a spin again and this time I actually kept three items (first time ever!). I had no idea they started carrying shoes and they picked out some trendy comfortable shoes for me which made the delivery worth it. This time it worked out, but it took them three tries to finally nail it.

So that’s the scoop on you and me. I am ready to show you what I got. I also have a new appreciation for fashion bloggers. I don’t want to do this again for a long time!!

Perfect Mustard Cardigan & Styling Ideas

Perfect Mustard Cardigan

Mustard Cardigan, Chevron Necklace, Gray Tee, & Leopard Print Shoes

mustard cardigan– H&M ($12.99!!), gray t-shirt worn for almost 3 years (similar, old navy),   7 jeans (thredup), world’s comfiest leopard flats (Amazon), chevron necklace (francesca’s)

Every year I get asked about mustard cardigans and, you guys, THIS IS THE ONE!! It is soft, the length is perfection, the sleeves have a dolman sleeve quality to the cut, and this baby is only $12.99- BOOM! I took a risk and got three of these in a variety of colors. This fits true to size (I am wearing the XS) and the length fits like this on someone who is a towering 5’1″ (jealous?) I still can’t believe this find this year and I hope you can snag one in the whole rainbow too!

Also this necklace is beautiful and just the chevron detail I had been looking for. It’s two toned and the piece is heavy with a sturdy necklace to hold the chevron. I highly recommend for a knockoff Madewell look!

Burgundy Cardigan, Gray T-Shirt, Chevron Necklace, & Leopard Print Shoes

Hope you love that sweater because here it is the wine color. Also, note to self, clean the mirror next time. Lord knows what is on this one.

Belted Black Cardigan, Floral Top, Skinny Jeans, & Black Ballet Flats

Perfect Black Cardigan

black rib-knit cardigan (H&M), floral print shirt ($14.99!!) 7 jeans (thredup), belt (similar, target), world’s comfiest black flats (Amazon)

And the cardigan again, but this time I belted it so it makes it totally different. Also, check out these ballet flats. I am going to say they look like something that rhymes with LEIKS and far more affordable. Oh, and JUST as comfy, I guarantee it.  This floral print shirt is amazing and has the mustard and blush color blended right in it. It runs small, I think, so I would size up one on this one.

Floral Print Shirt, Skinny Dark Jeans, & Black Ballet Flats

Seriously, how gorgeous is this print? It will pair well with just about everything in my capsule this year! Yay!

Cozy Gray Top, Chevron Necklace, Dark Jeans, Tan Tassel Booties

world’s coziest top that feels like pajamas (old navy), 7 jeans (thredup), tassel booties– your feet will say thank you over and over again (tom’s), chevron necklace (francesca’s)

Last week I raved about this top so I just wanted to show you how adorable this is. The cut is perfect and the material feels like a cozy blanket, but the kind that doesn’t make you sweaty. This top runs true to size and I saw so many of you ordered this one last week. I would love to hear if you loved it half as much as I did!! Tell me, tell me!

Black Cargo Vest, Ivory Shirt, Dark Jeans, Tan Tassel Booties

world’s coziest top that feels like pajamas (old navy), black cargo vest (target with a french accent- $29.99!!),  7 jeans (thredup), tassel booties– (tom’s), chevron necklace (francesca’s)

I wanted to switch up the olive green vest and added this black cargo vest as a topper for a variety of outfits in this capsule. It’s so cute and lightweight. I snagged the world’s coziest top in the ivory too and it will make a great staple under my dresses in the colder months. I’m wearing the XS and this one fits true to size.

Sleeveless Pintuck Swing Dress With Tan Belt Pintuck Swing Dress with Rose Cardigan & Tan Belt

Blue Swing Dress, Mustard Sweater, & Tan Belt

sleeveless pintuck swing dress (old navy), belt (similar, target), mustard cardigan– H&M, rose cardigan, dusty rose cardigan- J. Crew (thredup)

I clearly need to iron this BUT my husband said this is his favorite thing I got and it was acquired for a song at Old Navy (woohoo!). I am showing you a few ways I plan to wear it, but there are MANY more!

Sleeveless Pintuck Swing Dress

Pintuck Sleeveless Swing Dress

This dress has a lot of fabric to it and I was worried it would overwhelm my petite frame. This dress runs big so size down one. I am wearing the Petite XS and you can see the length on me is perfect. I will stick to wearing a belt with this one because I’m not paying for alterations until I am for sure planning to wear it for many a season. That said, when I eat my giant dinners, I shall let the belt fly and not worry about my belly hanging out.

If you carry weight around your middle, this is a great way to camouflage it.  Just skip the belt and distract the eye with a fun necklace or scarf.

Belted Boho Shift

Belted Boho Shift

Boho Shift With Suede Booties

burgundy tassel boho shift (old navy), belt (similar, target), suede booties (similar, old navy)

You guys! This is me being edgy. Remember, elderly hipster! I got this dress on impulse after that first one fit so good and I LOVE THIS DRESS. I do need to iron it (I’m exhausted- the kids, the running, the meals, the neverending story of my life), but the thing that I really love about this is that it is fully lined. I like it not belted, but my husband says it looks like a nightgown. I think we both need to warm up to the boho look because I adore this dress. It can also be paired with that mustard cardigan, but I didn’t want that in every picture because I do have a few other looks.

This one fits true to size, perhaps, a tiny bit baggy if you are on the fence of two sizes. Isn’t it just the cutest? I’m happy I went with that impulse. Combined with their every single day is a sale day coupon code and you can get this one in the $20 range!

  Black, Mustard Necklace

Back of Top

All black, mustard necklace, & suede booties

pintucked blouse in black (LOFT), Just Black black jeans (Stitch Fix– I know!!), suede booties (similar, Old Navy), mustard necklace (similar, but mine is from Goodwill, yo!)

I got two of these pintucked blouses for dressing up and for layering. I REALLY love these because they have a lot of movement and an adorable tie in the back without that open racy look (elderly hipster).  I am wearing an XXS in this one- sizing probably fits pretty true to size, I just have trouble with my smaller frame.

Stitch Fix sent the Just Black jeans and I fell in love. They are buttery and soft, but not linty and trapping cat hair as my other pairs. They sent me ankle-length and they were nearly perfect in length for me. I have been wearing these nonstop since I got them.

Pink Pintuck Shirt + Burgundy Necklace + Black Jeans
Striped Jacket, Pintuck Shirt, Tassel Necklace in Flourescents

Pink Shirt, Mustard Sweater, and Royal Blue Necklace

pintucked blouse in angel wing pink (LOFT), tassel necklace (similar, j. crew factory), striped blazer (similar, macy’s and under $30!!), blue bubble necklace (similar), burgundy bubble necklace, similar, mustard cardigan (H&M)

I don’t often think of pink as a neutral, but this soft pink delivers in so many color schemes that it is a new neutral for me. I think this is one of my wisest wardrobe investment pieces just for the variation it brings with color.

That neckline is hella fun too for a million colors and necklaces. This also has the tie back feature without the raciness (get off my lawn, whippersnappers!).

Burgundy Shirt, Black Jeans, Chevron Necklace Burgundy Top, Jean Vest, Black Jeans, Suede Booties

burgundy top (thredup– here is a similar one), Just Black black jeans (Stitch Fix), suede booties (similar, old navy), jean vest (thredup– here is a similar one on budget)

I just love everything about this. The top can be dressed up or dressed down and the neckline on this makes it perfect for pretty much everything. The pocket sits higher so it’s not right on the boob. Not that I have those. But for all of you SPECIAL ladies. This was made by an in-house brand for Stitch Fix, but I snagged it on consignment. Such a steal! This is my first jean vest ever and another SUPER edgy piece to my wardrobe.

Burgundy Tee, Black Jeans, Moccasins

Just Black black jeans (Stitch Fix), Burgundy Top (Stitch Fix), Adorable Moccasins (Kenneth Cole, Stitch Fix), mustard necklace (similar, but mine is from Goodwill, yo!)

How cute are these items? I had my doubts, but they finally pulled through. I made sure to request SMART basics for a capsule wardrobe. The top wasn’t my favorite until I put it on and realized how lovely it is. It’s almost a light sweater material and it drapes beautifully. These black jeans are my new favorite jeans and the slip on shoes complete my busy mom lifestyle. REALLY happy this time and plan to try again with the next capsule.

Sweater Dress from Anthro

Sweater Dress from Anthro

GORGEOUS sweater dress (thredup), blue bubble necklace (similar), Madden Girl Open Toe Booties (similar, Macy’s)

Now I’m just showing off because this dress…I love it and I got it on consignment. This is my jazz hands piece and I can’t wait to layer it for the cooler season.

Swing Top With Style

Madewell Swing Top  (thredup), pintucked blouse in black (LOFT), Just Black black jeans (Stitch Fix), black beaded necklace (similar, open sky)

Another thredup find and LOOK that pintuck blouse is underneath. My husband was like, “Whoa, fashionable.” This swing top is from Madewell and I love it. It’s one of those pieces that will pair well with a bib necklace for fancy nights out.

Perfect Striped Dress

Perfect Striped Dress

striped t-shirt dress (target), belt (similar, target), mustard necklace (similar, but mine is from Goodwill, yo!), nude peep toe shoes (similar, mine are also cole haan- they run narrow so I don’t last long in these!)

This is one of the weirdest things in my capsule, but I fell in love with it. This is a maternity dress. No, I am not making an announcement. Putting Me Together said this is the ultimate striped dress so I went with it. On a taller person, this will be right at knee length or higher (look at her- legs for days!). On me, it is a comfortable midi length. I absolutely love it and it feels like…you guessed it…pajamas. She says this one doesn’t pill after being washed- woohoo!

When the receipt breezed through, I had to text my husband and remind him that if I was pregnant, I was birthing the next Savior. We double locked it. LOL! Only fur babies moving forward!

Francesca Cardigan

Francesca Cardigan

The only miss was just because I am so petite. This cardigan was going to be everything. As you can see, I have PLENTY of cardigans and no need for this piece. It’s being returned. This would be adorable on someone of taller stature though!  I just couldn’t carry the volume or length very well.

PHEW! I also have a new appreciation for fashion bloggers.

More happening on Tuesday with my friend Ali and a few notes on my favorite accessories.

I hope this is helpful. If it isn’t, just get out of here because that was a crazy amount of work. And worth it…I hope.

xoxo

Planning My 2016 Fall Wardrobe Capsule

Fall-2016-Capsule-Wardrobe-Idea-Board

Yesterday I started the shopping process for my fall/winter capsule wardrobe. I love the creative process of putting these together and thought I would share with you how I put these together.  Although I always do the big reveal, I thought it might be fun to take you a little behind the scenes at my process.

fall_banner_6

Before I begin, I want to say this is FUN for me and not a chore AT ALL. I love having a beautifully curated closet and I enjoy the creativity in it. If you do not enjoy stuff like this, feel free to try something like a wardrobe uniform or do what you are already doing.

Please don’t criticize me if I love it.

I love a lot of stuff that you might not love, but getting dressed actually brings me a lot of joy.

I hope even if you don’t want to do it, you can at least appreciate the creativity behind it.

If you are looking for inspiration, my fingers are crossed we have similar taste and you will find this glimpse helps you too!

capsule-wardrobe- colors-for-fall

My Color Palette

The past couple of years my color scheme has leaned more into the red, white, & blue that feels very nautical and timeless to me. This year I wanted to warm things up so I am selecting a few pieces in wine, rose, mustard yellow, & navy. These colors are folded into my basic neutral scheme (gray, black, cream) for the year.

I love how these colors can be mixed and matched together.

I also love the pink hues since I love a more feminine touch to my wardrobe.

Here are a few pieces that I am eyeing in this scheme (Please Note- I am for waiting delivery on these so I can try them on. I will delete anything that doesn’t make the cut on this board and tell you why! These are affiliate links because they help support my site!)

Modern Henley Blouse

Modern Henley Blouse

Pintucked Blouse in Angel Wing Pink

Pintucked Blouse in Angel Wing Pink (trying this in a basic black too!)

Pintuck Swing Dress from Old Navy

Sleeveless Pintuck Swing Dress

(This will be layered under or over with cardigans or long sleeve t-shirts in contrasting colors when it cools down!

Don’t forget fun colored tights, scarves, & belts that will add even more fun to this one!)

Relaxed Jersey T-Shirt from Old Navy

Relaxed Brushed-Jersey T-Shirt

(Using these in the grey & oatmeal for layering under my sleeveless dresses. Also can be worn with my jeans on quiet days at home!)

Mona Solid Sweater Wrap

(To wear over EVERYTHING- love the gray interior on this one. Feeling hopeful about this piece!)

Here are some pieces that I found on thredUP (continuing my commitment to buy mostly secondhand!) Here is $10 to spend if you haven’t discovered this amazing online consignment shop!

My thredUP Haul (fingers crossed everything fits!)

I Also Pick a Statement Piece or Smart Classic

I have learned that buying one or two really beautiful statement piece really adds to my enjoyment of my capsule wardrobe. I have also learned it is a really smart investment to spend money on things like jeans, a good blazer (mine is 6 years old!), and a well-made skirt.  I bought a beautiful a-line red skirt that I wear absolutely to death and it has held up better than anything else in my wardrobe over several capsule seasons.

That investment piece really paid off and has transitioned from season to season really well while other trendier and cheaper items have not held up or kept my attention as long.

This year I wanted to add a vest for layering. Again,  this one is out of my typical budget, but hopefully a very smart investment piece.

I also happened to catch a BEAUTIFUL sweater dress on sale on thredUP that happened to be in my established color scheme. I just couldn’t resist her print and consider that a statement piece (as well as a classic print!).

Clean Out Your Closet

I’m Planning Another Closet Audit

Once I have everything in place, it’s time to count my pieces and whittle away anything I don’t need anymore. This process gets easier and easier each year, I promise you.  For ease, I usually just request a bag from thredUP and then send in items for store credit on my next capsule wardrobe. It’s fun to get items from them, wear them a season, sell them back, make money, repeat process, etc..

To me, it’s almost like those pricey wardrobe rental programs without the commitment or monthly fees.

Not only can you clean out your closet to make money, but you can also make money on your kid’s stuff and maternity items too! Simply order a bag with a prepaid shipping label to start your closet clean out. Their fashion resale professionals review your clothing and then pay up to 80% of the resale value. You can earn thredUP shopping credit, or simply cash out with PayPal.

Items that they don’t accept go to charitable partners or textile recycling companies. They can also be mailed back to you as part of their Return Assurance program for a $12.99 shipping fee. Be sure to check their quality standards before sending.

Get Professional Help if You Need It

I love fashion and feel like I have a strong sense of personal style, but it has taken me a few years to really feel confident in my choices. If you struggle with confidence, I recommend trying out a professional service or professional shopping service to help you.

I can’t rave enough about the Adore Your Wardrobe program (open for registration in September!!) for someone who wants to find their own sense of style. Not only do the video tutorials and printables help with your shopping, but you are connected to a FB community that can help give you feedback (and shopping discounts) as you put together your wardrobe. This program is like having a professional closet audit without judgement and that can be done in your own free time.

The other option is a shopping service like Stitch Fix. I have some referral credit sitting in an account so I am going to give that another shot, but because I have such a strong definition of what I like and don’t like in clothing, I tend to be very picky. That said, I know MANY people benefit greatly from the professional advice so this is a worthwhile experience to explore, at least once!

wardrobe-planner-17

Once everything arrives I will post an IG Story for you and you can tell me yay or nay on my selections! Be sure to follow me on IG to get a sneak peek!

Best Capsule Wardrobe Basics Under $50 from MomAdvice.com

One question that I get A LOT is what I would recommend putting in a capsule wardrobe. Curating was tough, but now I finally have all the building blocks in place to create many outfits easily.

The thing is, that this is MY capsule so none of these ideas may work for you. I like to dress very feminine, I usually dress less casual than my friends, and I dress for a petite pear shaped body. You may be a long lean lady or a curvy petite gal or gravitate towards a style that is less feminine…that is all okay! These ideas are just simply my own building blocks that I am thankful I invested in.

I explain over and over again that I am committed to a gently used wardrobe (you can read my tips for shopping for your capsule secondhand over here!) so almost all of the things I have bought were expensive pieces bought for a fraction of the retail price. That is how I am able to keep it on budget for me. It’s a bit like treasure hunting to find these items I needed and I got a real thrill from it. If you don’t, I’m offering some budget-friendly ideas for consideration.

I am incorporating all seasons in the recommendations to simplify today!
