The Capsule Wardrobe 2023 Guide You Need Now

Thursday, September 7th, 2023

Building a capsule wardrobe couldn’t be easier with these easy mix and match outfit ideas. Dressed up or dressed down, your capsule wardrobe 2023 guide is here.

The Capsule Wardrobe 2023 Guide You Need Now

Longtime readers know that I’ve embraced a capsule wardrobe for many years.  After many years of buying impulsively, chasing every trend, and spending money on outfits for one-time occasions- I wanted to do better.

Fall Outfit Ideas

Here is a picture from my capsule wardrobe way back in 2015.

This switch marked a significant shift in my shopping habits, prompting me to think more consciously about what I buy and why I need it.

The results have been remarkable, leading to smoother mornings and a profound pride in everything I wear.

I’m an advocate for capsule wardrobes because when you have less clutter in your closet, you can do more with what you have.

Many people begin their capsule experience with a monochromatic approach and gradually explore color after mastering the art of coordination.

Today’s post offers guidance on how to choose those base pieces so you can build your wardrobe out from there.

If you want to embrace the capsule wardrobe trend in 2023, you’ve come to the right place. In this comprehensive guide, we’ll explore a capsule wardrobe, how to build one, and my favorite finds for the upcoming year.

The Capsule Wardrobe 2023 Guide You Need Now

What is a Capsule Wardrobe?

A capsule wardrobe is a curated collection of essential clothing items that can be easily mixed and matched to create a wide range of outfits.

The goal is to have a compact yet versatile wardrobe that suits your personal style and lifestyle. By carefully selecting classic pieces that complement each other, you can simplify your daily clothing decisions and save money over the years.

A well-planned capsule wardrobe saves you time and money and contributes to a more sustainable and eco-friendly approach to fashion.

How to Build a Capsule Wardrobe

Building a capsule wardrobe may seem daunting at first, but it can be an enjoyable and rewarding experience with the right approach. Here are the key steps to get you started:

thredup cleanout kit

1. Assess Your Current Wardrobe

Before you start purging your closet or making new purchases, closely examine your current wardrobe. Identify your favorite pieces, the items you wear most often, and those that have sentimental value.

These will serve as the foundation of your capsule wardrobe.

I recommend requesting a Clean Out Bag from thredUP and removing any accessories, shoes, clothing, or coats that you no longer wear.

Once the company processes your bag, they can issue a credit that you can use towards seasonal pieces that stand the test of time.

2. Define Your Style and Needs

Consider your personal style preferences and daily lifestyle. Are you more inclined towards casual, classic, or trendy fashion?

Do you need professional attire for work, or is your lifestyle more relaxed? Understanding your personal style and needs will help you make informed choices when selecting new pieces.

This collection of clothing is my Fall 2023 capsule wardrobe, but the capsule collection needs to fit your personality and lifestyle.

3. Create a Color Palette

Choose a color palette for your capsule wardrobe.

Neutral colors like black, white, gray, and beige are popular choices, as they are easy to mix and match.

However, I encourage you to incorporate a few accent colors that complement your style.

The final piece in this set offers textures and patterns to embrace for this season.

Casual Fall Outfit Ideas

4. Choose Versatile Pieces

Opt for versatile clothing items that can be paired with multiple outfits.

Think about items like a well-fitted blazer, a classic white button-down shirt, a pair of dark denim jeans, and a little black dress.

These versatile pieces form the core of your capsule wardrobe.

5. Stick to a Capsule Wardrobe Size

Decide on the number of items you want in your capsule wardrobe. While there’s no one-size-fits-all rule, a typical capsule wardrobe consists of 30-40 pieces, including tops, bottoms, dresses, and outerwear.

If you are a beginner, I recommend Project 333 as a beautiful starting point. I used this as my personal style template for almost a DECADE!

6. Set a Budget and Stick to It

In 2023, sustainability remains a prominent theme in fashion. Consider investing in sustainable, eco-friendly clothing brands prioritizing ethical production practices and materials.

I’m not a fan of fast fashion, so the items featured today are ones that I personally inspected and can attest are made well and  I believe have longevity.

The truth is, most of the items in my wardrobe are secondhand because high quality and eco-friendly items are typically out of my budget.

If  I want splurge items like a trenchcoat, designer bag, or a well-made pair of trousers- I visit consignment shops or use thredUP.

Wherever you shop, don’t forget to activate your Rakuten app when making purchases. You can get cashback rewards on many of the items featured today. If you haven’t used the app before, here is $30 towards today’s purchases.

How to Make a DIY No-Sew Blanket Scarf (Plus How to Wear a Blanket Scarf)

Saturday, October 12th, 2019

Blanket scarves are so trendy and an easy no-sew DIY to make for cold weather. Check out this diy blanket scarf tutorial and how to style your plaid blanket scarf with this easy tutorial. One trip to the fabric store for flannel plaid fabric and you will have everything you need to make a blanket scarf of your own…no sewing machine required!

I am madly in love with blanket scarves.

My obsession started as all good obsessions do.

It began on Pinterest, of course.

All of these fabulously fashionable women were rocking these gorgeous oversized scarves, but they were out of my price range or lacked the fullness & beauty that was captured online.

I mean, who couldn’t get behind the idea of wearing a blanket and calling it an oversized scarf?

Count Me In!

I decided I wanted to make some for my minimalist wardrobe because it would add so much. Did you know you can make a blanket scarf with no sewing skills required?

Let’s begin by taking a peek at the coveted $44 Zara scarf (that sells out in minutes, not kidding).

I want to zoom on in it so we can take a closer look.

Zara Blanket Scarf

Source: Style for the Seasons

The thing I want you to see is that the edges are frayed on their version too.

Guess what?

You can achieve that with a little flannel and pulling.

The best part is that this version will cost you quite a bit less than $44. I am going to make a big stack of them to show you and then I am going to show you some fun ways to tie them.

How to Make a Blanket Scarf from MomAdvice.com

The first thing you will need to do is shop for your fabric which is so much fun. I went to a few shops to check out fabric and ended up finding it at Jo-Ann Fabrics.

Head over here to grab a coupon for your flannel fabric.

Want to know a pro-crafter shopping tip? Check out this app that I’m using to get a percentage back on my craft purchases.

If not, that same link will provide you a 40% off coupon. You will DEFINITELY want to use this because it makes these scarves budget-friendly. Don’t forget your coupons.

Head over the Fashion Flannel…at least that’s what they call it in Mishawaka (oh-la-la!).

Select your favorite patterns, tell them the amount you need, have them tell you they don’t have that much on a bolt, go grab another one, try again… Be annoyed.

Decide to do two sizes because you want you what you want, that’s why you brought it up there.

Got it?

I am going to show you what a 2 yard scarf looks like and then I am going to show you what a 2.5 yard scarf looks like below.

I love them both for different reasons and what you can do with them. The price (with no sales or coupons) is $8.99 per yard. That’s why it is great to see the two version (for cost-savings) and also really great to bring a coupon to save a bit on the fabric.

I wouldn’t recommend anything more than that or your scarf will choke you and you will die from scarf blanket suffocation.

It will be all over the headlines.

They will be laughing at you in those ridiculous segments on the radio where they try to shock you at the stupidity of Americans.  Your family will miss you. It would all be very tragic.

If you would prefer to shop online, I love to check over here for flannel by the yard. SO MANY great choices!!

How to Make a Blanket Scarf

1. Purchase 2-2.5 yards of flannel fabric (make sure the flannel printing is on both sides).

2. Using the patterned flannel edge as a guide (on the edges of the fabric), trim the edges of each side of your scarf with a pair of sewing scissors (these are what I have)  to expose the cut edges.

3. Pulling out the vertical threads, on the cut side of the fabric, begin fraying the edges of the scarf.

You will discover that pulling out threads really creates a beautiful finished edge

If you are struggling to grab a thread, don’t be afraid to use a seam ripper.

Keep doing this until there are no loose threads and you have a beautifully frayed edge. Repeat on each side of the scarf. DONE!

This is what TWO YARDS of fabric looks like.

You can see that it has a lot of fullness, but is not as long or as much to tie or knot around.

Do you want to see how to tie it to look like this?

Okay then.

How to Tie a Blanket Scarf from MomAdvice.com

How to Tie Your Two Yard Blanket Scarf

1. Fold the scarf in half, lining the edges up evenly. This creates more of a square blanket scarf versus doing it on an angle.

2. Make sure one end is shorter than the other and tuck it up over your shoulder.

3. Loop around once with the long end (or possibly twice depending on your neck size!).

4. Fluff and puff. Fluff and puff.

How to Tie Your 2.5 Yard Blanket Scarf

No need to reinvent the wheel to tie a blanket scarf…I just headed online to figure out a couple of fun ways to tie these longer blanket scarves.

I tried this braided technique on Classy Sassy and really loved it.

It is a little more complex than the one above, but it adds a beautiful detail to the styling.

How to Make a Blanket Scarf from MomAdvice.com

This half-tied technique couldn’t be easier and was a cinch to pull together and added just the right amount of fullness to the neckline.

How to Make a Blanket Scarf from MomAdvice.com

Here are a few other blanket scarf tying techniques I am looking forward to trying!

This one is similar to the half-tied technique, but no tying, just tucking. I can do that!

This chunky scarf technique would work really well with a 2-yard scarf so you could let the ends hang.

The 2.5-yard one would look great as a poncho or even pulled together with a belt.

This poncho style leaves the scarf folded making a smaller poncho version.

I also love draping this scarf just around my shoulders during the cold winter months. It makes the perfect shawl!

Regardless of the way you tie it, I love pairing these scarves with puffy vests, long sleeve shirts, and my favorite fall boots. Flannel blanket scarves are the perfect addition to your fall wardrobe.

How to Make a Blanket Scarf from MomAdvice.com

I’m Petite & Want to Make a Smaller Version- What Can I Do?

I’m pretty petite, but I know big scarves aren’t for everyone!

Shave 6-7 inches off the width on a 2 yard version to make a more petite version of this scarf with a little less bulk or experiment with your own sizing by creating your own custom version.

Just cut, try on, adjust.

There are no wrong or right lengths- it is what fits YOU or your recipient best!

Wear it a scarf or wear it as a blanket. The possibilities for this cozy project are endless.

Summer 2018 Capsule Wardrobe from MomAdvice.com

Summer is starting to slip away from me and I realized that I had never shared my summer capsule with you. I have to say, this summer I REALLY feel like I have everything I need for many summers ahead. Building a good capsule, with loads of longevity, takes a bit of time and practice. I have learned a lot over the years and today I wanted to share my summer 2018 capsule ideas with you.

I’m a bit wore out from our vacation so please pardon the fact that I refused to steam everything before posting it (even though I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE my steamer).  I promise it will be perfectly perfect when I am actually wearing this stuff.

Stay tuned for some of these pieces in action and ways to style this simple and easy wardrobe for summer.

Let’s talk about this 2018 Summer Capsule Wardrobe!

Target Style follow my capsule adventures on Instagram

First, What is a Fashion Capsule & Why Should You Do One?

A capsule wardrobe is a collection of clothing which is designed using only interchangeable items, in order to maximize the number of outfits which can be created. The aim is to have an outfit suitable for any occasion without owning excessive items of clothing. This is usually achieved by buying what are considered to be “key” or “staple” items in coordinating colors.

The reason I think capsule wardrobes are worth exploring is that you realize when you have LESS in your closet you can do MORE with what you have. My closet used to be bursting at the seams with clothes and, what I like to call, one-trick-pony apparel. I felt put together after tearing up my room and trying to build outfits in the process, but it took me so long to get ready in the mornings and I never felt like I had a truly seamless style. Narrowing my wardrobe down to 33 items as outlined in Project 333 was just what I needed to make mornings less stressful and finding a real rhythm to getting dressed for the day. It’s been a beautiful shift in my life and I don’t think I could ever go back to the old ways of bursting closets and pointless purchases.

What Trends Did You Embrace For Spring?

I am 40 now so I have started to steer away from too many trends. I am loving the romper and jumpsuit trend so I did add a few of those pieces into my wardrobe. I went bolder with colors and patterns on my skirts while keeping my tops more neutral this season. I continue to love ruffles and embroidered items so they made their way into my summer capsule too.

Get some inspiration for creating and styling your capsule by following my Capsule Pinterest Board!

Why My Capsule Shouldn’t Be YOUR Capsule

I show you my capsule mainly as some sort of accountability, but not necessarily for you to copy it. My style is probably not your style and that is okay. Your capsule can look nothing like my capsule. Your body shape could be different from mine and none of these cuts of clothing or ideas will work for you. When creating your capsule, create it around what you feel most confident in.

That’s been the best place to start for me.

Do Accessories Count in the Capsule?

One question I get asked is if I count accessories and shoes as my items. I do not, but feel free to do that if you like. For me a scarf, belt, or great jewelry really do add to the enjoyment and experience of my wardrobe. I am, however, more selective about the accessories I am choosing and really making sure that they are worth the space in my drawers and the money that is spent.

What Are the Rules for a Capsule Wardrobe?

Fall 2017 Capsule Wardrobe from MomAdvice.com

It feels strange to be talking about my fall wardrobe today after a weekend of record high temperatures in Indiana. I know that the cooler weather is just around the corner though and I’m really prepared this year with this fresh capsule wardrobe for fall. Fall wardrobe planning is my FAVORITE so I hope these options can give you some new ideas for your own wardrobe.

I fell off the capsule wardrobe wagon towards the end of summer, but I am back in the game again!

If you want to see how these pieces work, be sure to follow my capsule wardrobe account. I decided to start a SEPARATE Instagram account for my capsule since it feels like two separate audiences. This account is only about fashion & the capsule. You can follow me here (@momadvicecapsule) or if you just want the general usual odds & ends, you can follow me here (@momadvice).

It’s been a beautiful shift in my life and I don’t think I could ever go back to the old ways of bursting closets and pointless purchases.

What Trends Did You Embrace For Fall?

I am loving the feminine details this season from ruffles to bell sleeves. I incorporated those details into my pieces and also made a couple of smart investments in higher quality sweaters since warmer layers are a must in the Midwest.

My colors this year are in the red family (blush, burgundy, red), mustard, and green.

Why My Capsule Shouldn’t Be YOUR Capsule

I show you my capsule mainly as some sort of accountability, but not necessarily for you to copy it. My style is probably not your style and that is okay. Spring 2017 Capsule Wardrobe from MomAdvice.com

Over in the Midwest, we couldn’t welcome spring weather more!  Today I’m sharing my capsule wardrobe plans for spring and all about the trends I’m embracing for 2017!

I decided to start a SEPARATE Instagram account for my capsule since it feels like two separate audiences. This account is only about fashion & the capsule. You can follow me here (@momadvicecapsule) or if you just want the general usual odds & ends, you can follow me here (@momadvice). I hope that makes sense!

Let’s talk about this 2017 Spring Capsule Wardrobe!

Ruffled Sleeve Shift Dress

(check out some of my new options I purchased for this capsule!)

Since I embrace a more feminine style, I love the lace, florals, and ruffles that are happening right now. I wanted to incorporate those into my wardrobe along with my usual mad love for stripes and the nautical feel.

I can’t quit you stripes, I just can’t.

I have a pretty standard wardrobe now after years of doing this that include the usual suspects of chambray shirts, a practical blazer, colored jeans, and basic neutrals. This spring I leaned into the baby blue and rose and lightened up my cardigan game with gorgeous lightweight dusters and, a rather impractical but lovely, lace layering piece. Ruffles are happening throughout on dresses and my sweatshirts.

I am, however, more selective about the accessories I am choosing and really making sure that they are worth the space in my drawers and the money that is spent.

What Are the Rules for a Capsule Wardrobe?

Spring 2017 Capsule Wardrobe Shopping With MomAdvice.com

I debated on diving back into a capsule with you all again. It’s one of those things that I love planning and doing, but I don’t always love all the work that goes along with showcasing everything. That said, I went back over my stats on the site from this past year and five of our top articles visited were on  my capsule wardrobe and the planning posts that I had gathered.

With that in mind, I decided to dive back in and share another spring capsule with you!

You can also peek at last year’s spring capsule for inspiration over here.

Spring Trends I’m Loving

Since I am a more feminine style, I love the lace, florals, and ruffles that are happening right now.

This Seems Like Too Much Work

I know capsule aren’t for everyone and I won’t get into my laundry list of why I find them beneficial to me. I will say that I have been struggling with my health this year and I find that putting a little work in at the beginning of the season saves me a lot of time and effort later in the season when I am a little more depleted.

Knowing I feel good in the clothes that I wear brings me a bit of confidence and encourages me sometimes to not wallow in not feeling good and making more of an effort to get dressed.

I also consider this blog a sense of accountability to do my best showing you great ways to wear these pieces and make the most of every item in your closet. You can follow just my capsule on IG or you can follow me as a whole dang person over here. I have layers, people! 🙂

Let’s take a peek at some of my favorite finds for spring!

(ruffle sleeve dress (similar style- lots of sizes, also similar with lots of sizes) * necklace with the cutest clasp *gladiator sandals for wide feet ON SALE!!)

Sorry I forgot to shut my cupboards and move dishes.

Only one of us can look good right now.

I posted about this dress in my notebook and I know a bunch of you got this. If you haven’t there aren’t very many sizes left, but I will let you know if they restock. This one is a perfect substitute though!

This runs large- I’m wearing an XXS in this one. It is the perfect length, perfect weight with the ruffling, and doesn’t look clingy in the rear. If you suffer from Sir Mix A Lot issues, this might be a good one to check out because the cut is perfection.

My gladiator sandals happen to be on sale and are the most comfortable shoes ever. If you have a wider foot, these are generous in width and so fashionable. I have become a big fan of Naturalizer.

I also want to give a shout-out to this necklace. The clasp was tricky, but once I figured it out, I knew it would be my favorite piece. The mint also sold out, but it comes in a couple of other cute colors. The critter closure is adorable.

(striped boatneck tee* skirt from stitch fix* red belt* gladiator sandals for wide feet ON SALE!! or retailer here*necklace)

I had given up for awhile on Stitch Fix, but had some referral credit in my account and a new capsule was the perfect excuse to use it. They really hit it out of the park with this adorable skirt and I can already picture styling it a million ways. Although it wasn’t lined, the fabric is a good weight for holding shape and keeping the rear covered.

I also have been on the hunt for a true long sleeve striped tee (not 3/4 length- it drives me crazy under layers) and this tee is perfection. It’s true to size and the arms were really long. I ran it through the wash and it shrunk a bit making the sleeve length a little better for me.

This necklace is also adorable and would be a perfect Mother’s Day gift to yo’self.

(boho baby blue top* flying monkey distressed jeans * belt* gladiator sandals for wide feet ON SALE!! or retailer here)

I fell in in love with this gorgeous floral top for a couple of reasons. It has some really eye-catching details and the back swoops down to cover the rear so you can wear a tighter pant with it without feeling self-conscious. This top feels like a real statement top and is true to size.

I’m not crazy about distressed jeans, but these jeans feel like butter and have a great fit to them, particularly if you are curvy with a narrow waist. I did size up in these so go up one or two sizes if you are curvier on bottom. I like the angle of the ripped bottoms.

My husband does not like these so we had to have a talk when he called me Tom Sawyer. We talked about how some of us evolve and others of us don’t, and it is totally okay for both of us. *ahem*

I have been wanting to try those gorgeous longer sweaters, but at 5’2, it has the potential to swallow me up and rarely looks right on me. These lightweight open cardigans though could not be more perfect for a petite girl. It’s the perfect sweater weight for Spring and adds a great finishing detail to my florals, stripes, and basic tees.

This striped top, by the way, feels like pajamas, and it is so lightweight that it could be worn in the summer with a cute pair of shorts. I am not a fan of those weird twists or ties on the bottom that make one’s eye go right to my problem areas so this is nice because it has great movement and the twisted feel without the bulk.

Also…pajamas.

What more could a girl want?

Cushy Peep Toe Shoes for Wide Feet

slip your feet into these cushy peep toe booties

I do treat myself to a good pair of shoes each year and I happened upon these gorgeous peep toe booties and knew they were the shoes for me. They come in wide that is actually generously wide and the bottom feels like slipping your feet onto pillows. It has a zipper in the rear for slipping these on and off.

They require ZERO breaking in and feel like wearing your slippers.

Now that I splurged on these, it’s time to get these feet in for a pedicure.

ruffled sweatshirts (got this in pink & light gray- true to size and perfect weight!)

best basic tees* flying monkey jeans * world’s comfiest peep toe shoes * necklace (similar)

I did want some comfier items in my capsule too and a few basic tees went into my shopping cart. I read tons and tons of reviews on tees and wanted one that wouldn’t require a cami underneath so I went with this style because of its high reviews. I think these run small and wish I would have sized up one size.

I also wanted a cozy sweatshirt for cooler nights and couldn’t love this one more. It has slouchy shoulders so feel free to cold shoulder it up on this one. I love the thoughtful messages on these pieces too.

I also wanted a ruffled sweatshirt since they are so cute, but ruffles can hit in some unflattering places. I gotta say, these ruffled sweatshirts are AMAZING and I get compliments on them every time I wear it. The ruffle is just right and would even be appropriate for my bustier friends.

Since I am a sweaty gal, my secret to keeping the sweat at bay is these. If you value your capsule wardrobe at all and tend to be a pitty mess like me, buy yourself a couple of these. They are helping my wardrobe last so much longer!

(lace layering piece* flying monkey jeans * world’s comfiest peep toe shoesnecklace (similar)*best basic tees)

I love this lace layering jacket in a pretty rose. It was suggested by Ali Oesch, the shop owner, to consider it for packing for a vacation to wear over your swimsuit.

Wouldn’t that be cute?

I can picture belting this or wearing it over a pretty dress in the summer too.

(pink shirt* white pantsworld’s comfiest peep toe shoes* necklace with cutest clasp)

These are two more selections from Stitch Fix and I’m on the fence with them so I will let you know tomorrow if they made the cut. I prefer a slim cut leg and these look like the boyfriend style a bit. I don’t know if I find this cut that flattering on me. Maybe you guys can tell me what you think?

The top is cute, but wrinkly so I will press it and wear it around to see how wrinkled it gets throughout the day. I hate ironing so this might just head on back to them although I’m loving the back detail.

Tomorrow I will share my entire spring wardrobe with links to shop, these are just the new pieces that I wanted to show off to you! I can’t wait to hear your thoughts!

Make Money Organizing Your Closet

I’m Planning Another Closet Audit

Once I have everything in place, it’s time to count my pieces and whittle away anything I don’t need anymore. This process gets easier and easier each year, I promise you.  For ease, I usually just request a bag from thredUP and then send in items for store credit on my next capsule wardrobe. It’s fun to get items from them, wear them a season, sell them back, make money, repeat process, etc..

To me, it’s almost like those pricey wardrobe rental programs without the commitment or monthly fees.

Not only can you clean out your closet to make money, but you can also make money on your kid’s stuff and maternity items too! Simply order a bag with a prepaid shipping label to start your closet clean out. Their fashion resale professionals review your clothing and then pay up to 80% of the resale value. You can earn thredUP shopping credit, or simply cash out with PayPal.

Items that they don’t accept go to charitable partners or textile recycling companies. They can also be mailed back to you as part of their Return Assurance program for a $12.99 shipping fee. Be sure to check their quality standards before sending.

Get Professional Help if You Need It

I love fashion and feel like I have a strong sense of personal style, but it has taken me a few years to really feel confident in my choices. If you struggle with confidence, I recommend trying out a professional service or professional shopping service to help you.

I can’t rave enough about the Adore Your Wardrobe program (registration opens next month!)  for someone who wants to find their own sense of style. Not only do the video tutorials and printables help with your shopping, but you are connected to a FB community that can help give you feedback (and shopping discounts) as you put together your wardrobe. This program is like having a professional closet audit without judgement and that can be done in your own free time.

The other option is a shopping service like Stitch Fix. As you can see, this month I actually had some success with them despite being so particular about my style. Definitely look into that one if you value the advice of a stylist.

How Capsule Wardrobes Build Confidence

Fall Capsule Wardrobe Ideas from MomAdvice.com

This post is sponsored by thredUP. Thank you for supporting the companies that support this site!

In 2014, I discovered the world of Project 333 and decided that I wanted to give a capsule wardrobe a try. It had a way of impacting not only my closet, but impacting my entire life. I realized the beauty in the editing, the simplifying, and the high that comes from discovering how much fun it is to make one piece work in multiple ways.

I also began to realize the importance of investing in good quality pieces since they work so much harder than they used to. The items I have in my closet are primarily from J. Crew, Madewell, Anthropologie, and Banana Republic. You might be surprised to know that I have rarely (if ever) shopped in any of those places though. My discovery of an online consignment resource called thredUP enabled me to make the finer things a part of my life on a Target-sized budget.

Over 80% of my capsule wardrobe has come from this store and I love the company’s mission to not only share great quality clothing for a fraction of the price, but they also love to inspire women with their #badassmoms series. This month, for example, they profiled journalist, Megan Alexander, on how she manages the mom juggle while tackling front-line reporting for Inside Edition and even the Super Bowl. “Hard work, hustle, flexibility, and a positive attitude. It sounds simple but it works,” is her motto for life. These profiles are meant to inspire and encourage women to be their very best.

You really get a sense of the hustle in this piece and the hustle of so many other moms that are making the world a better place while caring for their family.

I love each of these pieces, but Brandi Riley’s story, in particular, resonated with my own journey It isn’t just because she is a blogger, but it is because she is a blogger doing big things for others in her community. She founded a program, Courage to Earn, that lends support to female digital entrepreneurs. It inspires me so much to think outside-the-box with my own business and how I can help support other people around me to reach their own goals.

One of the things that has helped me gain confidence and feel like a #badassmom has been learning to live with less so that we can give more to others. Having a wardrobe that really looks like me and that is easy to pull together adds so much confidence to my life and cuts the clutter in our home.

I get a lot of questions about my capsule wardrobe and what pieces I would recommend so I shopped thredUP to show you some of the beautiful deals I found that would make perfect capsule wardrobe additions to help build your confidence and feel like a #badassmom too!

Must-Have Fall Capsule Wardrobe Basics

white blouse + polka dot scarf + tan bag + tan booties + dark denim

A Good White Blouse

A good collared white blouse is worth its weight in gold, BUT it took me many, many tries before I found the perfect version of it for myself. Ideally, this shirt is wrinkle-resistant, buttery soft, and fits your frame well.  Not only is it a beautiful item on its own, it is the perfect piece to layer over dresses, worn under blazers, can be worn over other shirts in your capsule, can be belted, can be tied, or can hang loose like a jacket. I consider it a must-have for my wardrobe, but you need to find one that feels like YOU. This top is Maeve (from Anthropologie) and was purchased for $32.99.

Remember, stark white blouses aren’t for everyone (something I learned in the Adore Your Wardrobe series) so be sure you pick the right shirt color for your skin tone.

peplum burgundy sweater + mint statement necklace + leopard print belt + ivory shirt + dark denim + tan booties

peplum burgundy sweater + mint statement necklace + leopard print belt + ivory shirt + dark denim + tan booties

A Good Cardigan

In the Midwest, it is all about layers and one of my favorite items for layering are cardigans. Finding the perfect cardigan can be tough and, I have learned, not all cardigan cuts are flattering.  This Fall, I got a J. Crew cardigan from thredUP that became my go-to cardigan. I loved it so much that it is constantly on my radar when I am shopping on thredUP. If you find one you love, you want it in all the colors, and the way I can tell this is my favorite is that the material that is listed is Cotton instead of Wool. Always check the fabric description to ensure a cozy (and not itchy) option for layering.

I love a good flare on anything or any fun details that seem a little out of the ordinary on a sweater. This Free People option ($24.99)  had beautiful buttons and a figure-flattering flare that I loved.

ivory shirt + kimono + tassel necklace + dark denim + tan booties

Although this isn’t a cardigan, a kimono can also be a smart layering piece and this inexpensive offering from Merona has an embroidered detail that can work well with your fall wardrobe basics ($7.99). I added a tassel necklace to break up that neckline and love that this looks pulled together without feeling too fancy for my usual errands.

gray cardigan over gray shirt + black leggings + tan boots + mustard accessories

I also loved this wool option to wear over my fall basics (Banana Republic $22.99). This is still a cardigan, but a completely different shape than the typical boyfriend cardigan I would normally reach for. I slipped a gray shirt underneath to keep this cozy and neutral. These boots are also, in fact, a thredUP find from last year. I get so many compliments on them and they are a brand I would have never been able to afford otherwise.

military jacket + gray shirt + statement necklace + black leggings + tan booties

military jacket + gray shirt + statement necklace + black leggings + tan booties

A Military Jacket

The military trend is still going strong and a good Military jacket can be another great layering option instead of a blazer this year. Pretty much anything olive green makes my short list of smart fall wardrobe basics this year and I found this practically brand-new Banana Republic jacket for a mere $39.99! What a dream! Don’t feel limited to just a jacket though, this same trend can be replicated in vests, pants, and button-down shirts.

flannel shirt + striped dress + statement necklace + nude booties

A Flannel Shirt

There is nothing cozier than flannel and this is one 90’s trend that I can get behind again and again. I remember being a kid and borrowing my dad’s flannel shirts to follow that Nirvana-inspired grunge trend. Did you do that too?  Now I prefer a more tailored look and love flannel options from J. Crew, Old Navy, & Madewell. These button-downs can be tied over a dress, added over a t-shirt, and layered under this year’s sweaters and vests. This cozy Madewell option was just $22.99!

pleated patterned top + leggings + tan booties & bag

Add a Little Pattern

Patterned shirts can add so much to a basic wardrobe and I definitely recommend adding just one shirt to make your wardrobe more interesting. This Mave top ($32.99), has a tie and gorgeous pleated details on it. You can still sit in your comfort zone of neutral tones while still adding a fun pattern to your basic wardrobe style.
