Giveaway Results: Walmart Gift Card for Your Family Night

game night

Thank you so much for entering our giveaway. We would like to congratulate Jenn (Commenter #140) on being our winning entry. Jenn said:

“We love to use a family fun night as a reward system for our daughters good grades and behavior. She of course has no idea that they just as important to us as they are fun for her.

We start the day before with her giving us her list of movie choices, we decided on a dinner that we can all three prepare and make together as well as enjoy. After dinner we play a board or card game and talk about what has been happening lately at school and our work. Then we pile in the living room together in our pj’s with a bowl of popcorn and enjoy a movie together. For us, it’s all about the listening. We learn so much more about our daughter and what she is thinking on those nights then any other time.”

What a great entry, Jenn! We loved hearing about your family  nights and hope to offer many more great giveaways here each Tuesday!

I am so excited about this giveaway and getting an opportunity to share a fun family night opportunity! Walmart has started a great program called, “Family Moments,” that encourages families to spend an evening together at home instead of spending money out on the town. With an affordable line of board games, family movies, and fun snacks, you can now enjoy a family night at home for $40 or less! The best part about it though is that this family night can be repeated over and over again once you have the games and movies on hand.

They sent our family a $40 gift card and we had a fantastic night together. I picked up Ratatouille and Blokus for our family night. In honor of our theme, we cooked a pizza together, watched our fun movie, and then had popcorns and homemade slushies for our snack. After the kids headed to bed, my hubby and I enjoyed playing Blokus and spent some time together over our board game. It was a wonderful evening that we can enjoy for many years and I was able to keep under the $40, even with a fantastic Disney movie and a more expensive board game.

Walmart also has set up a Family Game Night Center at their Walmart stores. This display offers savings on several board games, movies, and snacks including:

  • $8 board games- Candyland,Chutes and Ladders, Yahtzee
  • $10 board games- Jenga, Monopoly,Trouble
  • $15 board games-Life, Operation and Twister
  • $18-Bop It, Monopoly Championship, Pictureka, Sorry Sliders

and $10 movies include:

• Camp Rock
• The Chronicles of Narnia: the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe
• Dinosaur
• Enchanted
• Hercules
• High School Musical (1 and 2)
• Homeward Bound (1 and 2)
• The Game Plan
• National Treasure (1 and 2)
• Pirates of the Caribbean (all 3)

We want to give away, to one lucky reader, a $40 gift card to Walmart to create your own fun family night. The contest is a quick one so you can experience the Family Game Night Center. Leave me a comment and tell me your favorite family night activity by 09/23/09 (Wednesday) at 8PM EST. The more creative the entry, the better!

  1. On family fun night we either cookout on the grill or have homemade pizza, we love movies and popcorn or a good game of UNO. We could really use some new games the kids are kind of outgrowing some of ours. Our wish list is for Jenga and Boggle. thanks for the chance…

  2. We have just instituted our Saturday night movie night now that Fall has arrived. It was a huge success last winter and kept us motivated to get through the hard days of the work/school week. We try and do a new movie every week — using Nexflix — and I make up a fun, special treat to eat. First night was ice cream, then after that popcorn, eclairs, etc. Always very special!

I look foward to game night as soon as playing games with my twin girls, 3.5, becomes a little less maddening. :)

  4. Friday nights at our place are Pizza & Movie night. It’s a fun, relaxed, weekly tradition that the whole family counts on.

  5. Our favorite family night activity IS rolling out the old board games (that we grew up with) and teaching our daughter how to play! We’ve got all the classics and she has her favorites, but it’s great in Upstate NY, where the winter weather lasts at least 7 months. We like to curl up with nice homecooked meal and a fun board game!

  6. We like to have an indoor picnic, complete w/ picnic blanket, basket, and finger food. We sit and laugh for a long while and eventually, after dinner, break out the board games too.! It’s a great way to get to talk to your kids!

  7. Honestly our most frequent family night activity is a movie. I wish it were something a little more interactive….Games are hard for us because of the age span of the kids. UNO works well though. Love to use the gift card to check out the options! :)

  8. We usually play board games, but lately we’ve been dusting off our old home movies and sitting down with a bowl of popcorn to show our son what our childhood was like. He loves it! Plus it’s fun for us to see ourselves as little kids. :)

    Posted by Stephanie | September 21, 2009, 8:28 am
  9. If we win, we would probably get National Treasure as our movie and Pictureka as our game so we can have a grand “treasure hunt-ing” time ourselves. Sushi is the family night meal of choice usually, but we may have to find something a wee bit more creative to go with the theme. Board games are a great way to spend time together.

    Thanks for hosting the give-away!

  10. I love family nights! We usually do a $2 Aldi’s pizza, salad (with veggies from the garden), and leftover hamburger and hot dog buns transformed into yummy garlic-parmesan bread.

The last time we had a game night we played Guesstures. The kids laughed and laughed at Mom and Dad doing the pantomimes. We get timed, but they do not. =) We have even borrowed games from friends to try them out – another great way to save money.

    Thanks!

  11. Before our friends all moved away, we used to have game night all the time. Our daughter is to young for games still. My husband and I love to play dominoes, especially Mexican Train. Takes forever to play and sometimes we have to span the game over 2 nights.

  12. My oldest is just approaching that age that we are going to pick up Candy Land or Chutes and Ladders soon. I am so excited to be able to start playing games as a family. Both my husband and I come from game playing families and look forward to continuing the tradition.

Right now, family night tends to be a Disney movie and popcorn.

  28. We usually have movie nights and our kids have been asking to incorporate games as well. We have a few games that have been given to them as gifts but we usually get tired of the same 2 games we have. Once our finances are more stable I plan on buying more games and having a regular weekly family game night.

  29. Movie nights are our favorite but we love games too! My 8 and 10 yo’s love Ticket To Ride and Sequence for board games and Skip-Bo or 8& 1/2 for card games. We also love to play Farkel-the dice game. Popcorn, ice cream, and pizza are the fav’s around here… All made better if they are homemade! The kids favorite thing to do is to blow up our camping air mattress and load it up with every pillow we own and everybody piles on!

  40. Our little one is a toddler and has recently discovered puzzles. Our family fun evening is spent having a yummy BBQ dinner, playing outside, collecting rocks and pulling the tomatoes off the vine while it’s cooking,. Then enjoying dinner quickly and then winding down the night with the few wooden puzzles we have. It’s a time to cherish and remember fondly.

  44. Every Thursday night I used to go to my parents and my dad and I would play a mean round of Jeopardy on the TV, then when Survivor was on, we’d watch that and bet on who would be voted out. My dad passed away two years ago and since we adopted a toddler from Russia – now he (who has my father’s name) and I sit down with popcorn on Thursday nights and watch – and when he’s old enough for Jeopardy – I imagine some mean games with him too!

We livw pretty simple around here!

  76. My son is still too young for family game night, but whenever we get together with my husbands family we play games like this version of Mexican bingo (I can’t remember the exact name!), Mexican train dominoes, UNO, and others. It’s great because everyone gets in on it (and it’s a big Mexican family, so that’s a lot of people!), and we yell, fight, laugh, cry, cheat, scheme, gang up on each other, insist we each should have won, but we do it all in good fun! It’s a blast!

  81. I hope creativity doesn’t win, because we never really do anything unique. However, we do like to go out to dinner and just talk and maybe see or rent a movie. Everyone is always going all over and eating at home doesn’t allow us to sit for long as everyone eats fast and then runs off, so we love to eat out if we can and just relax and talk and nobody has to cook. Great way to catch up.

  87. Our family game night favorite is playing “kitchen” with our 24-month old! We play cooking and eating games in his play kitchen until we’re all “stuffed” from eating such great (felt) food. Then we put the little guy to bed and play a grown up game of Scrabble! Love our family game nights!

  88. Family night is traditionally Monday and Friday evenings. Dinner is casual and eaten picnic style on a large blanket in the family room. Our current favorite game is the fishing game (we have two boys ages 3 yr and 4 mo). I would love to win this family fun night and get a new game!

  89. Saturday night is “Popcorn Buffet” night at our house. We pop some popcorn and serve it with raw veggies and dip, cheese cubes, grapes and other fruit, and some chocolate for dessert. We then either watch a family movie or have a game night.

  90. We like to make our own pizzas, cheap and the kids enjoy putting on the toppings. My kids are 4 and 3 and even though they’re just getting the hang of it, they love to play games with us! Zingo and Don’t Break the

  93. We are a family of 3…my 6-year-old daughter, my husband and me. We usually have 2 parts to our family night out. It’s on Saturdays. In the afternoon, we get our chalk and create a big snake-like hop-scotch in the backyard. The winner receives a free chore day coupon and a myster prize (could vary from books to $5). Of course our 6-year-old daughter wins :) .

Then, when night time comes we pack a picnic and head to our local drive-in to watch a movie (child appropriate) under the stars. The best saturdays for us.

My older daughter and I play Scrabble Slam which is a highly addictive fast paced card game and lots of fun. It’s fun to have time with the little ones and then play more advanced games with our older daughter when they go to bed. It’s nice to give her some extra attention and time.

  106. I love family movie night! We let the kids take turns picking out movies to watch, pop some popcorn, dim the lights and enjoy the show! My hubby and I decided that it was easier to allow the child who picked the movie to ask as many questions as they would like so we wouldn’t have to keep saying, “Shhh.” With the permission to ask away, it’s actually much quieter! LOL

We split up into 2 teams (Team Mickey and Team Minnie when we play any of the Disney or Pixar Scene Its). We do pizza or if I’m not too worn out, a favorite meal of the boys (tacos, ‘baby burgers’ aka sliders, or even spaghetti). We keep it simple and just have fun!

  129. My son is only 3, but we’ve already started having family game nights. We gather round our kitchen table with a big bowl of popcorn, pretzels or other yummy treat and spend time together playing our game. Since Jackson is only 3, we usually wind up playing by his new rules rather than the ones printed on the box. And that’s just fine. It’s about spending time together, not who wins or loses or how we play. (Unless his Dad and I are playing Scrabble and then it’s very important that I win!)

We have a nice sized yard, so we have a “game area” were that children play baseball, jump rope, have water balloon fights, play frisby and kick ball. When the sun starts to set and the mosquitoes come out we head inside were we have dessert and play Karaoke (it’s free because it’s included with our cable package)I have printed the song titles and we have our “official” Karaoke list. We also give away a prize to the winner of the contest (which consist of a basket that has a small gift that each family has contributed. 133. We enjoy TV shows as a family rather than a movie night. Right now Heroes is the show are family is watching together. This way we have a weekly sit down without incurring the cost of a $10 movie(we do occasionally rent at the redbox movies like Wolverine but it isn’t a routine thing).

My kids vary in age so up until recently games are a challenge. I did pick up Hyperdash recently and am considering Boochie for an outdoor game. I also think the new connect 4 looks interesting as well as the game Querf, which seems somewhat reminiscent of the cranium games my kids have enjoyed. If I won that would probably be what I invest in.

144. Family game night immediately brings to mind my late grandmother, who used to play UNO with our whole family. It was so much fun, and she would always pretend to not remember the rules so that she could sneak in a blue card on a green card or something. It was great fun to try to catch her at it! She frequently won, and then, even at almost 90 years old, would do a little dance and sing her “I won!” song. Those kinds of fond memories are the ones that a family game night can bring, and I hope that having a game night for our family will be just as fun. (Hopefully without all of the cheating!)

  175. Our kids are pretty little… so our fav family night is a quick Elmo movie with some popcorn — then when the kids are off to sleep it’s time for a mommy/daddy movie!
