The Mercedes GLK Test: Day 3

The nice weatherman informed us that we’d be experiencing an all-out blizzard today. Not a snowstorm, a blizzard. We were well on our way to becoming buried when we woke up this morning as evidenced by this quick little video we took. Notice our front door had frozen shut:

Mercedes GLK in a snow storm

Of course, we had important places we needed to get to today. My husband had an out-of-town meeting to attend, so he got dibs on the GLK. As he was digging the GLK out, we watched as our neighbor made it as far as the end of her driveway before getting stranded. There’s no way that my husband’s car would have made it that far. The Mercedes, however, drove through the still-unplowed subdivision like it was summer. He reported back that on his way to the meeting he passed 3 cars that had become stuck or slid off the road. He also witnessed a near head-on collision as the car in front of him decided to travel sideways for a while, in the opposite lane.

He arrived to his meeting early, but the handful of plowed parking spots had been taken. Maybe it was being dizzy with confidence from his new ride, but he decided the GLK could make its own parking spot. While he had trouble opening the door in waist-deep snow, he somehow got that vehicle out when it came time to leave. Boys!

While my wonderful Subaru has all-wheel drive as well, I think he had the advantage when it comes to blizzards. The GLK is a little higher up, but it’s not like you’re driving a school bus. It’s small enough to feel like you’re in a car, but can still hold as much as my wagon does. I’m starting to warm up to this thing, but maybe that’s just the heated seats.

  1. I can picture my husband making his own parking spot also.

Have a great day and hopefully you won’t be getting anymore snow.

  2. Man! I’m glad we don’t get waist deep snow around here! There’s no way I could get past my driveway!
Glad the Mercedes worked for you guys in that type of weather.

  3. You could not have asked for “better conditions” to show off the abilities of the GLK. For all it’s good looks, it also is rugged but then, so is your husband to venture out in the bad weather.

  4. I’m glad we only got 3in.

  5. This GLK sounds like the perfect vehicle for snowy weather. We live in Northern NH and get snow starting in Nov. and this year will have it on the ground until probably the end of March. We have a bear of a driveway and I have to drive my husbands 4 door 4×4 250 pickup most of the winter and it is so not fun to “park” anywhere because it is soooo long and big. Thanks for these updates on how you like it and how it handles in the snow. We also have 4 children so we need something that will hold all of us.

  6. I have to say that heated seats are the BEST thing ever invented. I even use them in the summer when my husband has to have the air on sooo cold!

  7. Wow. That’s a lot of snow. We got quite a bit with that storm as well, but not a blizzard! Sounds like a good vehicle to drive in the snow!

  8. No snow here in FL but lots of frost…brrr. That SUV would be a nice thing on these cold days.

  9. I’m not sure being able to drive through snow would be an important feature for us since we live in Florida, but it’s great that it’s great that it holds up in such bad weather.

  32. The all wheel drive and ground clearance are two of the main things that we will be looking for in our next vehicle. Of course, we probably won’t be buying for another 2-3 years so the GLK should have a decent track record by then but from what I’ve seen from Mercedes, in the media and through reviews like yours it looks like a very nice and well built vehicle.
Thanks for the continued review and I’m glad your husband had no problems in the snow with the GLK.

  34. That’s awesome that it made it through the blizzard! I’m in Ft. Worth, TX so we don’t have that problem. But I bet it would rise to the occasion in one of our random ice storms! Thanks for the chance to win!

  64. Thats great that the GLK can drive through blizzards. Being from Colorado, I have gotten my 4WD stuck in snow all the time. It would be nice to be able to rely on a car when blizzards arrive.

Maybe I need to appreciate my weather a bit more instead of bemoaning the lack of seasons…which I have been known to do. This car seems to be growing on you! It certainly seems to do the job!!

    Posted by Hollind | February 6, 2009, 2:26 pm
  132. Wow! Not that I have to deal with blizzards, or even snow for that matter, but the MLK does handle snow impressively.

    Posted by Lisa | February 6, 2009, 2:30 pm
  133. Wow! I hate driving in snow! What a treat to drive the GLK in those conditions – I mean if you have to be some place!

    Posted by Stacy W | February 6, 2009, 2:32 pm
  134. I would love to be able to get around without difficulty in the snow! You have to be loving that!

Posted by Michelle Szymanski | February 6, 2009, 2:33 pm
  135. We definitely need a vehicle that can handle blizzard conditions where we live!

    Posted by Michelle | February 6, 2009, 2:38 pm
  136. The more I read about the GLK, the more I think there may be one in my future after all.

  140. This Mercedes sounds like a dream, I’m already checking into it online!!

Posted by Jennifer Hemphill | February 6, 2009, 3:06 pm
  141. Mercedes GLK are the best! What luxury! What ease of driving! If I would have driven this car 33 years ago, I might not have failed my driver’s license test drive. Am I driving this car or is it gliding on fumes? I can barely hear the motor, it is so peacefully smooth. Now, if only my husband were so quiet…

Posted by Lynne Glass | February 6, 2009, 3:19 pm
  142. Wow! Sounds like a great bad weather car!

    Posted by Melanie | February 6, 2009, 4:12 pm
  153. Just found this, so will miss out on a couple of days. But I do have an excuse. Have been away from the computer being at the hospital where my first great grandchild was born. About the car, always have known that Mercedes had a reputation as a luxury car, but never really thought about its behavior in really nasty weather.

    Posted by Tracy | February 6, 2009, 4:35 pm
  157. Is this a 4WD or AWD? We just bought a Chevy Trailblazer with 4WD and it gets around great. I’m not sure how it would handle in a blizzard though. That’s reassuring to hear your hubby made it with no problems!

  172. Dang, that’s a lotta snow! Glad your hubby made it to the mtg. – and back- safely. So is there anything wrong w/ the GLK?? Sounds absolutely perfect. Here’s a question: are the heated seats only in the front?? (not that I plan on being a passenger in the back of a new Mercedes – I’d want to drive it! ;) )

    Posted by Char | February 7, 2009, 11:11 pm
  317. LOL did Mercedes somehow talk Mother Nature into sending you a blizzard just to test out the capabilities of the GLK? If so, they have my utmost respect. Even more so for the ability to make a vehicle that can actually stand up to those conditions. I could have used one of those here, in Missouri, about a week ago. We couldn’t get out for 4 days. Heated seats? That sounds like a massage compared to the standard non-heated seats I have in my own car. Sign me up for the gift card on this one as well. Looking forward to the next read.
