The Mercedes GLK Test: Day 2

img_6640Today we woke up to huge amounts of snow, covering everything and making a general nightmare. As I rushed around to get our son ready for the bus, my husband was actually happy about the prospect of barreling through snow banks in the new GLK. He meticulously scraped the windows clean and shoveled it from beneath the mountain of snow. We all watched as he zipped stylishly down the driveway.

Tonight we decided to investigate more of the features. The obvious place to start was the DVD entertainment center. This was quite a treat because the closest thing we had for my car was a VCR system we bought on the cheap which came in a 40-pound bag the size of a tent. I’m sure you’ll be shocked to hear Mercedes has developed something a little more practical. Two huge LCD monitors sit behind the front seats for the kids and a DVD player is right within reach. We discovered another favorite feature, the surround sound system.

That’s right, a complete high-end surround sound system, just like the one in your husband’s man-cave. Now, for us that seems a bit over-the-top when it comes to entertaining your kids (we prefer the “who can go the longest without making any sound” game), but as music fanatics we were impressed. The first thing we’ve done to every car is upgrade the sound system. We tear out the speakers and have CD players installed because factory stereos always sound worse than a Speak-And-Spell. The one in our GLK is incredible.

By accident we pressed the roadside assistance button. And before long, a super nice man arrived to help us. But since we were sitting in our driveway we didn’t really need any assistance. He was very understanding and it was nice to know that he’s out there if you need him.

  3. Love all the cool features. We also play the “quiet game”. Same idea as “who can go the longest without making any noise” game.

  10. I would absolutely love the surround sound. I may even have to take a ride in the back just to watch a dvd!

  11. Very cool, but I don’t think I would want the screens to always be there. Do they come off? My kids would be asking for a dvd every time we got into the car.

  12. Oooh, I like the inside. I thought maybe I wouldn’t. Okay, I hoped I wouldn’t.

  13. WOW! Men really are kids aren’t they. I watched my husband purposely stray to close to the snow banks on the side of the road yesterday… just to break through! What a nut!

Posted by ellen cunningham | February 4, 2009, 12:15 pm
  21. Wow, those are huge screens. But I’m not sure I’d want to encourage the kiddos to watch tv in the car all the time, I like to reserve that for long road trips.. . .

  22. I am waiting for the car maker who comes up with true directional sound, so that the ids can listen to something in the back and the grownups can still talk in the front. How is the front seat to back seat acoustics. I will in the future always shop for vans with 2 people. In our current van it is almost impossible to hear the driver if you are i the seat right behind the driver.

Okay I think it’s funny that roadside assistance showed up at your house…that’s a cool feature. The only thing Mercedes could do to make it better is have him show up with chocolate to soothe your nerves after you break down.

  84. My husband did the same thing when checking out our new Envoy. Didn’t know what the “red plus sign” was for. All at once, the “voice of God” asked him what his emergency was. We all got a good laugh out of it.

  134. Surround-sound??!!! I may sell my hubby on this new car idea yet. And there are 2 screens…so does that mean my kids don’t have to watch the same DVD? WOW.
SO much better than the who-can-go-the-longest-without-making-any-sound. :)

  137. I must say, it is THE most important feature in a car…

  140. I have found the dvd player a great time breaker during our long roadtrips. I just wish they had created a way for them to not always be visible.

    Posted by Tamara | February 5, 2009, 7:24 am
  141. We almost put one of these into our new car but my husband never would have gotten out of the back seat… We did upgrade the sound system though and I LOVE IT!

  146. Goodness! Those LCDs seem kind of excessive. Maybe I’m just not up with the times or something. Sounds like a fun rental vehicle, but not one I’d like for every day. Too many buttons…too many oops! :)

  167. What I’d like to know is are you making payments? If you are, you are doing your family a great injustice. 2009 should be a time to get out of debt! Most americans pay in excess of $400 a month for a car payment to impress someone at a traffic light or stop sign that they don’t even know. Is all this necessary? Time to get back to basics young Moms, you could learn something from your mothers!

  190. How exciting what a beautiful car. Would love to have the dvd players for the kids in the backseat while we travel.

    Posted by Cheryl | February 5, 2009, 4:33 pm
  191. I used to try to play the quiet game with my high school students. :)

Totally funny about accidentally pressing the roadside assistance button; however, maybe that is something that should be improved if it’s so easy to “accidentally push”. Maybe you really did it on purpose?

    Posted by Callie B. | February 5, 2009, 5:04 pm
  192. Wow, are the monitors permanently mounted or do they flip up to close when you don’t want to use them? I’d wonder about theft and temptation to use them all the time. ;)

Well hey, nice new wheels. I could get used to that.

    Posted by EG | February 5, 2009, 7:14 pm
  197. I would have check out the DVD system first too and then the stero. How is it for safety ratings though? A new car is always nice, the DVD and sound system are always a plus, but is it a safe car?

    Posted by Baba | February 5, 2009, 7:15 pm
  198. Hey, it worked out perfect that it snowed. What a great test that needed to be done. Thankfully, you were there to do the job.

    Posted by mannequin | February 5, 2009, 7:33 pm
  199. I saw that someone asked if the LCD screens are detachable, I am also curious about the answer to this question. I am not sure I would want them visible at all times. Especially when you have to leave your car overnight or for an extended time period (airport).

    Posted by Nichole | February 5, 2009, 7:34 pm

I guess if you add in all the extras you get the price doesn’t seem bad – still out of my range but it sure would be fun to own I’m so-o-o jealous you get to drive this magnificent machine, even if it is for only a week!

Posted by Kimberly Waddell | February 7, 2009, 9:25 pm
  460. I was waiting to hear about day 2. That is funny that assistance came w/o double-checking if you needed them. Like the surround sound system. I need to stop reading this w/ hubby around b/c he might get crazy ideas:)

    Posted by Jay | February 7, 2009, 9:48 pm
  461. The DVD on the back of the seats looks good. Did you try sitting in the back seats to see if it was comfortable?
That’s good to know that in case of an emergency, you know someone will come and help you.
    Thanks for the chance.

    Posted by Michelle Y. | February 7, 2009, 10:44 pm
  462. Okay, DVD players as well? Surround sound system? The temptation is alluring! However, I must admit that accidentally calling the assistance guy would be a MUST; at least once! ;) Sign me up for the gift card on this one too, please. Albeit, I’m truly enjoying reading these reviews from a real person.
