The Mercedes GLK Test: Day 1
This summer, Mercedes contacted us about a new SUV they were coming out with that’s going to be aimed at families looking for all the features and safety of a Mercedes but for a lower cost. As most of you know, I’m not one for fancy vehicles. In fact, I’m pretty content with the decade-old, but paid for, cars we drive now. But hey, it couldn’t hurt to hear more about the offer.
I found out that Mercedes has aggressively priced the new GLK to be competitive with many popular family vehicles out there. Starting at $33,900, it’s nearly $15,000 less than their next step up. That’s still a lot of money, but not as much as I thought when I looked at the cost of these comparable vehicles.
- Toyota Sienna Limited – $35,665
- Honda Odyssey Touring – $40,505
- Chrysler Aspen $35,58
- Chevy Tahoe $37,415
- Subaru Tribeca Limited – $32,595
I decided to put the new GLK to the Clark test.
Today was delivery day. While I was out grocery shopping with the kids, who were so bad that a stranger offered to help me get them out of the store, the GLK arrived. Typical to my day, I didn’t get the chance to do anything but rush the kids around it on our way inside. I had to get my son ready for the bus that was on its way down the road, haul the groceries in and make lunch for our daughter who had somehow found “11″ on her scream volume.
When my husband got home from work I told him that I forgotten an ingredient for dinner and that we were out of diapers. A wide grin came over his face as he grabbed the keys to the GLK and said, “it’s ok, I’ll go get them.” Our son tagged along and upon their return I asked what he thought of the new car. He shouted “It’s awwwwesooome!” and rattled off every cool feature he could remember. Clearly my husband had enjoyed the diaper run more than he usually does.

The burning question… will you buy one? I appreciate mercedes attempt to reach the “family” market.
EDIT: Wilo- It gets around 23 miles per gallon. The 34 MPG I quoted before is for the diesel version in the UK. They have planned a special diesel version for the US that will get nearly 40 MPG however.
Babymedbasics- I have a few more years on my old clunkers so I will hold out. I would love to buy a used one, if I could

my father-in-law has a mercedes and i’m always blown away by their incredible service, let alone the vehicle itself . . . so if we ever get to a point where we could afford a $34,000 car we’ll definitely buy a mercedes . . . in the meantime would love a $50 gift card for groceries!

Very sleek car. My husband would have fainted at the sight of this vehicle in our drive away.
I would have never taken a second look at this car because of the price range, but honestly- it is not as bad as I thought it would be!

What kind of head room do this car have in the front? I am tall myself (5′9″) and a lot of the SUV’s don’t have the head room I would like.

MPG isn’t bad at all. Our Jeep gets 14, but we like it and can’t afford a new one. The Mercedes looks cool!

Amanda- I don’t know about fitting three full size car seats. This is a smaller SUV. I could comfortably fit my two seats, but you would have to probably stick your own seats in there to see if they would fit comfortably.
You would also have to check with your own insurance company as to the price on this. I think it is moderately priced though if you are comparing this against a minivan, but the car seat will probably be your biggest factor
Alemos- That is exactly how I felt about the price. I was really shocked in a good way too especially when doing a price comparison among other cars that we would consider to be more reasonable.

Our next vehicle will be an SUV of some type and $33,000, while being a little high for a family targeted vehicle, isn’t a ridiculous price. especially for a Mercedes.

I traded in my Dodge Caravan in Barney-purple in 2003 for an SUV. With four kids, I needed something roomy that didn’t look like a mom-mobile. I wish this Mercedes was available then. I’ve heard great things about Mercedes over the years but I figured it was way out of my lowly price range…not so at this price.

Looking forward to reading your posts on this. My husband is a huge car buff (and would be so thrilled if we got a chance to try out something like this for a week! So jealous) He will be going to the Chicago Auto Show this month and I’m sure will look at this. Interested in how it is for getting the kids in and out vs. a minivan. The car seat question…we had two car seats and it was very roomy. It *might* be able to fit three, but you would need to try your seats in it to see if that would work. It depends on the arms of the seat. It doesn’t have a middle row of seating like some other SUV’s. I hope that helps!

I’ll be anxious to read each day – and I’d love to know how their leasing rates compare – having worked for Ford Motor and in the auto industry my experience biz experience and personal experience has convinced me that leasing enables many more people to get into a much higher end “luxury” style car as the residuals are great. How fun that you get to test drive a new car. Did you actually get to drive it yet?! Not big enough for our family, but it is a pretty car (& cheaper than my van brand-new!). Hmmm, surely I could find a way to stuff a couple more kids somewhere……!
Neat car, how much rooom is it inside. Can it fit four large adults, one wheel chair and a walker comfortably, our should I just stay with my 1994 voyage van.

After driving a Toyota Prius, enjoying the great gas milage (especially when the price was over $4.00 a gal.) it would be VERY hard for me to give that up but it also would be great to drive a “luxury” vehicle again – even if it was for only a month. In these tough economic times you have to make a choice and sometimes sacrifices have to be made – so we traded our roomy, luxurious Mercury Marquis XL in for a hybrid. I’m not sorry we did but it’s like comparing a cubic zirconia to a diamond!

How’s it handling our Midwest winters? I was thinking about getting a minivan for our next car, but I do love those SUV’s in the winter!
My husband’s father always owned a Mercedes and now my husband who also enjoys them is passing his love onto our son to be driving son. In these times Merceds just shows its wisdom in helping the economy.
I wonder how the Mercedes held up in all that snow? Is it worth buying an SUV Mercedes? Hmm….

One bonus with luxury cars is that you get a loaner car when its in for service at the dealer. That is a must for this busy mom who cannot be without a car for a few hours, much less a day! They even transfer my carseats for me from my car to the loaner. We have acuras and volvos. Never had a mercedes but I am sure their customer service is top notch too!

The great thing about Mercedes is that they are classic with style and they never quit! You might pay a bit more for maintaining, but also it comes with a fabulous warranty. No I don’t work for Mercedes, just know the background!

I’m totally with you. We drive very conservative vehicles and have never purchased one knew but I’m SURE if we had this to try out, my husband would look for any excuse to drive it!
Cool! I never would have guessed a Mercedes would be in the same league as the others mentioned. We’re going to have to start shopping for me a new vehicle soon, too!

Any car that can fit 4 kids, their stuff, and groceries is worth the buy! We put miles, miles, and more miles on our vehicles just driving kids around and trying to get to their activities. It is about time someone made a SUV that helps with fuel costs!!!

We’ve always paid for our older, used cars with cash. I’ve been driving my ‘96 Toyota Camry now for 7 years and it’s well on it’s way to 216,000 miles. Somebody recently told me my car is like the never-wear-out sandals of the Israelite’s as they crossed the wilderness

We had a Mercedes sedan for 23 years. I gave it to my nephew at that point who is still driving it two years later. My late husband only drove Mercedes. I’m from Detroit and my dad worked for GM, nobody drove Mercedes where I’m from! I never thought I’d be comfortable in what I thought was an snooty car. Was I ever wrong, a Mercedes is the best car investment you could ever make!
It’s 2009 and a year to have hope. So, I’m hoping that I’ll be one of the lucky winners of the Visa gift card.

reliability-it would be hell if it was always in the shop.
gas mileage-even worse if it got under 20mpg over all.

Woo hoo! I too drive an older vehicle – Ford Windstar mini-van – I love the automatic doors/liftgate in the rear – definitely a “helper” when I have my hands full and its raining.

This is when you know that you’ve crossed the point of no return, I love my Grand Caravan and couldn’t trade it for anything in the world! Prior to having chldren, just 3 short years ago, I told my hubby, “I will NEVER buy a minivan”. Well two kids later, and I LOVE, LOVE LOVE it:) Next year I might even break out the Christmas Vest!

Wow, for a mercedes that does seem like a good price. I just got a new car myself…a ford expedition, so I won’t be getting a new car for a while, but Wow, I never would have thought to even look at a meredes because of the price…but we could have looked at it!
Wow…a Mercedes for that price is amazing!!!!! My husband would not mind late evening milk or diaper runs either.

That Mercedes is making my mouth water. When I was pregnant I wanted to have twin girls so I cold name them Alexis and a Mercedes. So when others asked their names I could respond, “I have an Alexis & a Mercedes” hehe I now have… an Alexis
