  3. One charitable thing we have planned? Let’s see…

We’re going through all of my daughter’s toys and figuring out what we can donate to a good cause – and then we’re taking the cost of one toy that we would buy her and spending that on a brand new toy for someone else!

  5. I am in charge of my church’s pantry. My charitable “thing” is making sure that all of the families that come to visit have enough food for the holidays. Also, we “adopt” families at this church. I suggested 8 of the 12 families we are adopting this year. They are really struggling. I am hoping to pick up a few Christmas gifts for some of them.

I already have books 1-7, so I really just want to be a runner-up. LOL

    Hugs,
    Melinda

  26. I am giving the gift of courtesy to all I come in contact with this season, especially store personnel. I have noticed for years now how in this time of “goodwill towards men” people seem be even more rude and insensitive to others than usual in their “rush” to “enjoy” and “get ready for” the season. I hope my example will not only give a moment of respite to the person receiving it but make others give pause at their actions and pass on a gift of a little kindness.

It was so much more rewarding to buy school clothes for a little boy and comfy slippers for a disabled woman than to pick out yet another scented candle that would just collect dust in a friend’s closet. We’re going to make this an annual tradition.

  105. This year like the past ones also, I give monetary donations to the salvation army bucket collectors outside of the stores. At my daughter’s school they have been collecting for the service members in Iraq, collecting gently used books for donations to kids, and for Families Helping Families services in which we have donated items to all 3(monetary to the FHF), also have picked a tag from the salvation army gift tree at my local grocery store in which we bought a gift for a child. It makes us feel great to be able to give even though I don’t make alot of money being a single mom, but have more then many people for which I am grateful..Happy Holidays!!!

  199. I am a single mother of three children. My kids have everything that they need, and some of the things that they want. I wanted my children to be grateful for the things that they do have. So, this season, I started a new family tradition, one that I wish I started a long time ago. I volunteered myself and my children to help serve food to a home that houses speacial needs kids. These children were as young as 5 and on up to 17 years of age. We did this for Thanksgiving, and we will do it again for Christmas. My teenage son hesitated at first, but after that experience, he is looking forward to doing this evry year. I was even surprised with my 7 and 4 year old daughters. We all enjoyed this very much. So even if you do not have money to spare, you can always give up some time to volunteer.

  204. Since my grandmother was a very caring & giving person, giving has been taught to me from a very early age. I feel that my children should also learn this important lesson. Every year at both my children’s schools each classroom “adopts” a family in local areas. The students purchase items from the family’s “Wish List”, bring to the holiday party at school where they make cards & wrap the gifts. Parents & children deliver the gifts & get lots of hugs & see tears of joy from the families. Seeing how little these families have and how greatful they are has really made a huge impact on my children as well as the students who also witness this! I have noticed charities are being very affected this yeat with receiving donations. In leiu of gifts, our family is donating to Children’s charities in our friends and famiies names. They love the idea, and everyone feels great for making a difference

  209. -I am planning on taking some of my deceased daughter’s beanie babies back to St. Mary’s Children Hospital in West Palm Beach. Alot of these beanie babies were given to my daughter over the course of her treatment there from 1997-2004 where she received treatment for cystic fibrosis. She had two lung transplants that failed from a variety of errors and I lost her at the precious age of 21 on 6-7-07. Beanie babies would make her smile and collecting them over the years was exciting but with her passing away I know she would want me to share some of them with the children at St. Mary’s so they could enjoy them too. Something about a beanie baby just make’s the day better. My cfkitty lives on in all that she has touched and continues to touch with her online journal. I wanted to donate them last year but my grief was too fresh and I was not willing to give any of her up but I know donations are down and the few gifts the kids get in the hospital make being there just a little bearable.

I buy them food to take to work and send groceries when I can to their home. We are going to buy them a few Christmas presents and hopefully make their Christmas a little better.

Hopefully our time is short in this place, but it has given us a gratitude that you can only have thru experiance. My daughter has gone thru her clothes that don’t fit her any more and we gave them to a foster family charity thru my moms club group. We also gave our sons clothes he has grown out of to a friend. 295. My son and I send out christmas boxes every year via Samaritan’s Purse, an organization that delivers shoeboxes filled by us with small gifts to children in foriegn countries. It is called “Operation Christmas Child”. The very first year we sent out a box to a boy the same age as John, we received a newsletter that contained a photo of a african boy holding what we believe was our christmas box. The joy on John’s face matched the joy on that child’s face, so far away.It is now a tradition in our family to begin gathering toys and small items starting when school starts so our boxes will be ready for the next child. I believe even the smallest kindness can change the world, and a shoebox filled with dollar store goodies just may change the life of a child my son and I will never meet. Not to mention the change it has brought to my son, who has so much. He knows that a little compassion and care can go a long way and that it is the duty of all to care for those in need.

I recently had a client come into the office who was laid off a week before Thanksgiving and is having a rough time getting through the holidays. We have decided to adopt this family for Christmas. 373. When my oldest daughter was two years old, she had to spend a week in the hospital with a viral infection and very high fever. Unfortunately, that week was Christmas week. When we woke up on Christmas morning, her bedside table (and the bedside tables of all the children in the pediatric ward) was full of toys and goodies that had been donated to the hospital. That touched my heart in a very special way. Every Christmas since then, I have donated new toys and blankets – as many as I can afford – through drives held by our local hospitals, churches, and schools. I am on a tight budget, but whenever I see a good sale, I stock up so that I can donate a lot of things rather than just one or two. I also stock up on sale-priced canned goods and nonperishables for the local food drives.

We were asked by my sister to see if we could find any of my daughters clothes that she had out grown so that she could take them to the school she teaches at. This school does not have a lot, and the families need a lot of help. This touched me, and we went down to the basement and found 3 large totes worth of clothes with winter coats and clothes. It feels good to know they will be put to good use.
