  1. my favorites as a younger child/tween were Harriet the Spy, Deenie, and Charlotte’s Web. Now I really like horror, and short stories-the Hot Blood series is really one of my favorites but has a more adult theme to it… I enjoy reading it though, for the twisted stories, wondering how on Earth someone could think up something so darn bizarre?! I have also won a few books from Christian writers in Blogland, and am now reading them as well, and am happy to say that these have been good too.

  2. One of my favorite books is Neil Gaiman’s Neverwhere. I just finished rereading it (again) last night. Great, fun story with a really tight plot and wondeful characters.

  4. One of my favorite books of all time is “The Hiding Place” by Corrie ten Boom. It was the first WWII/Nazis book I read and had a profound impact on me as a child.

  5. My favorite book is The Count of Monte Cristo

    Posted by Connie | September 3, 2008, 9:20 am
  6. I want all these books! I love Madam Bovary. Sadly, I could very much ientify with the title character. I haven’t read a book in a year, since my daughter was born. She has chilled out some so let the reading commence!

  7. One of my favourite books is the Canadian Oxford Dictionary… I know that’s probably not the kind of book you meant, but it’s the first one that came to mind.

Thanks for the chance…my family breath books. In these times (gas prices) even a book is a luxury…thank you.

  10. One of my favorite books is The Secret Life of Bees. I hear there’s a movie coming out. I love books about southern America during the early 1900’s. My other niche is Victorian literature (the sound of my profession makes me want to puke, but it’s true). Beat literature is always good for a buck the system uplift.

    Posted by Renee | September 4, 2008, 6:49 am
  11. I absolutely loved “In Her Shoes”, by Jennifer Weiner. But, as is so often the case, the movie was a HUGE disappointment…

  12. I just finished an Anna Quindlen book, Rise and Shine. I’m a fan of just about anything she writes.

  13. Where the Sidewalk Ends

    Posted by CR | September 4, 2008, 7:49 am
  14. Gosh…since I am a bookworm, I have so many faves!! I’d say that two of my biggest contemporary faves though would be “As Time Goes By” by Lori Wick (I love the way she makes her characters so real) and “Echoes” by Robin Jones Gunn (funnily enough my husband and I first met online similar to the main characters in this book–which was a fave of mine YEARS before I met my husband)!!
Of course, then there are the classics. Probably “Swiss Family Robinson” and “The Count of Monte Cristo” are my top two. I also love me some Jane Austin, of course!!
Then there are the great kid books…the Ramona books, Bobbsey Twins, Hardy Boys, Charlotte’s Web, etc.!!
It really is too hard to pick an all-time fave!!

  15. Anything by Alexandre Dumas, especially “The Count of Monte Cristo.” Also, “Blue Like Jazz” by Donald Miller.

  16. My favorite book of all time is “Till We Have Faces” by C.S. Lewis. It is an amazing story that had a profound impact on how I view God, and how He sees me. It’s one I’ll read probably 50 more times in my life.

Posted by Michelle Wegner | September 4, 2008, 8:02 am
  17. My favorite book is “The Last Great Necessity” by Charles David Sloane. Its a page-turner, which is surprising as its a scholarly history of American cemeteries.

Posted by Black Monday | September 4, 2008, 9:16 am
  18. My favorite book is Deck The Halls by Mary Higgins Clark and Carol Higgins Clark. Who doesn’t love a little suspense based around my favorite holiday.

Posted by Maria Scott | September 4, 2008, 9:28 am
  19. My favorite book of all time is _A Tree Grows in Brooklyn_ by Betty Smith. A teacher friend recommended it to me one summer in junior high, and my copy has been read and reread probably 50 times. It’s a really touching “coming of age” story about a young (and very poor) girl during the Depression and all that she and her family did to survive and hang in there together to make it through.

Makes me want to pull it out and read it again…

  20. Wow - I love looking at everyone’s favorites - and the quick reviews - that gives me some more to put on my ‘to read list’. My favorite book right now would be “The Kite Runner” by Khaled Hosseini - it’s amazing - sad/cruel/haunting/sweet/redeeming - it’s just a really good read you won’t want to put down.

    Posted by Teresa | September 4, 2008, 9:43 am
  21. I just finished The Shack by William P. Young and I think it’s one of the best and most important books I have ever read!

    Posted by haley | September 4, 2008, 9:46 am
  22. Oh wow, I need to pick a favorite? Yikes, that’s a hard one! One of my recent faves is Tracy Chevalier’s The Virgin Blue. Some of my favorite authors right now are Patricia Cornwell, Linda Fairstein, and Kathey Reichs. I love Janet Evanovich for a great laugh. And then when I think of classics, for some reason I think back to the books from my childhood, the Anne of Green Gables series, Nancy Drew, books by Beverly Cleary and Judy Blume.

What a great giveaway, Amy, thanks!

  23. Well, I love The Lord of the Rings trilogy. And also anything by Minnesota writers Lorna Landvik (especially “Angry Housewives Eating Bonbons”) or Erin Hart (”Haunted Ground”). Oh, and the great book I found in a used bookstore, sort of a nature/season/travelogue chronicle, “Wandering Through Winter” by Edwin Teale. And Sarah ban Breathnach’s “Simple Abundance.” And on….and on…and on….

  24. I adore anything by Jane Austen, but my favorite book of all time is The Endless Steppe by Esther Hautzig. It had a profound effect on the young Jewish girl I was, and to this day I’m one of only two people I know who would love to go to Siberia - and the other girl is a fan of this book, too!

  50. I love “SWAY” written by Ori and Rom Brafman…It is a book about the irresistible pull of irrational behavior. Reading makes you think of and analyze decisions you (in general) have made to put you in the situations you find yourself in. Yes, it is a “common sense” type of book, but it is a bit more in depth.

I love LOVE love to read and would be extremely excited, overwhelmed and enthusiastic if I were chosen as your winner, so, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE CHOOSE ME…I’ll be crossing my fingers for this one and hoping for an email saying that I won :)

  54. My favourite book of all time is “Ryan White; My Own Story”

Do you remember Ryan White? He was one of the first boys to get HIV from tainted blood supplies, back in the day.

His story was sad, painful, horrid, yet beautiful all at the same time. He was tormented by adults and children alike and was even kicked out of school.

Michael Jackson and Elton John were to of the high profile people that befriended him.

He tells his story with honesty and frankness. He speaks of things he wishes he could do, things he never will do, leaving his mother behind, etc.

Its beautifully written and I truly believe it should be required reading for all pre teens and teens.

I keep this book in my living room where I can see it every day as a reminder of how brave Ryan was and it serves as an inspiration to me.

I’d love to win these books.

    Thanks

  112. I love and adore my Little House on the Prairie set of books! I am a avid reader and have been my entire life. I am actually on my 2nd set of Prairie books because I read them so much as a girl and teen that the covers fell off and pages came out (thank goodness for Ebay..lol).

Of course the book I read when I feel down is a book titled Nickeled and Dimed; on not getting by in America. It reminds me that what I have is enough because there are people working a lot harder than I am for a lot less.

Oh, and I love Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood too!!

It’s about a Greg Mortenson who after a failed attempt to climb K2, a mountain in Pakistan, realized a desire to help those who had helped him in this country. He went on to build schools with the help of the Pakistani people. He faced many detours along the way, but overall helped rebuild some of America’s reputation, and helped girls become educated. It’s great - highly recommended!
