  1. I used to love going to beauty schools for a great treat - in the town where I used to live, I could get a great hour-long European facial for $10. It was like a mini-vacation that didn’t break the bank!

  2. One way I save money on my beauty care needs? Sleep. No matter how much cream and lotion I apply, I won’t look good if I’m not rested. Once I lose some shuteye I instantly have to pull out the concealer, acne meds and everything else to try and “brighten up” my face. Sleep is free, too.

  3. Oh man, I’m not as frugal as I’d like to be but sometimes, we melt all the little leftover pieces of soap to make one. It’s a fun project to do with kid and it gives us an extra bar of soap!

  4. Ok, this probably doesn’t really count as a way to save money but I just don’t really wear make-up. There has been a very few times when I do (when I got married) but other than that, it’s just not an everyday thing.

It also means that everything I use is fresh and I don’t have to worry about “should I have thrown this away?” because yes, I should have. :) It all started because I’ve got sensitive skin so most things made me itch or break out when I first started wearing make-up and I just got used to never wearing it. And then I learned that most make-up is either good for 3 months (mascara) or about a year so anything I had needed to be tossed anyway.

  5. I host swaps with friends. We all bring products that we tried and didn’t like then swap them. I’ve gotten some really good beauty products this way.

  6. There is a local upscale salon in the town where I live. They have different level hair stylist levels 2-9. A level 2 is the cheapest and it goes up from there. I always make an appointment with a level 2. They always do a great job and you are still getting the upscale salon experience. I always come out feeling great without spending a ton of money.

  7. I go to a beauty school to get my hair cut for only $8!

    Posted by Katie | August 26, 2008, 7:07 am
  8. Drink plenty of water, a good night’s rest, and daily exercise in the fresh air. At bedtime I wash & moisturize my face, apply a basic lip moisturizer and hand cream. Simple but it makes a world of difference.

  11. Sleep is a good one! I try to save money through the utitlies I have to use. I let me hair air dry as long as I can before needing the hair dryer to actually style it. Then I also try to use as little water as possible in the shower or at the sink.

  12. When something I love is on sale- I stock up… after checking and making sure the expirations will be OK. That way I don’t have to give-up the products that I love, in order to save money. On face washes, also, I apply the wash to may face-FIRST with my hands, then I can take a wash cloth and scrub. I always tend to use more with a wash cloth if I put the wash directly on it because half of it soaks into the cloth!

Also, with my kids: I put all of their shampoos in a pump bottle. This way they don’t “accidentally” squirt out too much and waste hard earned money! They are happy because they can do it themselves, I am happy because I save money!

  13. I usually wait to buy my cosmetics (lip liners and liquid eye liners) until they are offering a “special gift” with a purchase. I use the lipsticks, mascara and eye shadows that come with the gifts.

For cleansers, moisturizers and sunscreens, I buy from my local drugstore. Those are just as effective as the fancy department store brands, and much more affordable!

    Posted by Cathy | August 26, 2008, 7:20 am
  14. After years of buying makeup only at department stores, I recently have begun making forays into drugstore brands - and actually found I like them better in some cases! Mascara being one of them. I’m not someone that uses a lot of product per use, so things last me a very long time. I tried the Wal-mart version of Pantene and actually found I liked it as much if not better than the name brand. I have longer hair so it doesn’t have to get cut as often, which saves, too. Finally, I also love Cetaphil! I get it at Costco and it lasts me a long time. Thanks for the fun giveaway!

  15. I found the best way to save on beauty care needs is also to use minimal makeup and only the necessary essentials. I also have sensitive skin and after trying many products found the best thing was washing my face with water and using little to no foundation!

    Posted by Melissa | August 26, 2008, 7:25 am
  16. I save my powder foundation leftovers until I have enough to combine all the little crumbs into one compact, then pack them down to make a new supply.

    Posted by Jennifer | August 26, 2008, 7:25 am
  17. Save money on beauty products? When I started shopping at CVS, I started saving a ton of money on all our family’s health and beauty products. I haven’t paid full price for makeup at WalMart for over a year now, and the stuff I use now is nicer then what I used to buy.

    Posted by Jessica | August 26, 2008, 7:25 am
  18. I watch for sales at our local store and then use a coupon if I have one. If I’m about out of something, I’ll stock up on a fresh one at that time.

    Posted by luann | August 26, 2008, 7:26 am
  19. Well for the last few years my mom has given me gift certificates for makeup in my stocking (I am 30 yrs old)! It helps me make much needed replacements at least once a year without breaking my bank!

Posted by Martha Cullaty | August 26, 2008, 7:27 am
  20. The oldest trick in the book: I save a ton of money and buy mascara at the grocery store. BTW, a professional makeup artist told me once that you should buy a new thing of mascara every month!

    Posted by Emily M. | August 26, 2008, 7:28 am
  21. For some of our beauty items, I buy the comparable store brand. If it’s an item we use a lot, I stock up when it’s on sale.

We use a lot of Cetaphil for our family. We squeeze the Gentle Cleanser into the kids’ bathwater. We slather them with the cream after toweling them off. We all have sensitive, dry skin!

    Posted by Leeanthro | August 26, 2008, 7:29 am
  22. I use baking soda as an exfoliator and hair clarifier.

    Posted by Laura | August 26, 2008, 7:33 am
  23. I started doing all my health & beauty shopping at CVS. I wait until there are sales on makeup and shampoo, then combine coupons with their ExtraCare Rewards program. I haven’t paid more than a dollar for anything in six months. You do have to give up brand loyalty, though.

    Posted by Gina | August 26, 2008, 7:35 am
  24. When I go to the mall I check out all the cosmetic counters - often they have free samples of various products.

    Posted by Becky | August 26, 2008, 7:46 am
  25. Instead of buying oil-blotting sheets I cut up paper napkins and tuck them into my purse - the recycled brown ones work great! It is better for my skin to absorb any excess oil throughout the day than to use a lot of oil-absorbing powder. After blotting my face I just pat lightly with a touch of powder and I look freshened up. This cuts down on the amount of powder I use, which is not only a savings but is better for breakouts, etc.

  26. Two ways I save money on beauty products is by getting enough sleep and drinking plenty of water.

    Posted by Heather | August 26, 2008, 7:52 am
  27. Coupons combined with store specials. Sometimes they owe me money and I have to buys some inexpensive item so that I can give them a few cents:)

Posted by Kiki Bacaro | August 26, 2008, 7:52 am
  28. One way that I save money on beauty care needs is to only buy things when they “free”. Makeup and hand lotion takes just about forever to use up, but it’s so easy to just buy them because they’re cheap. Between all the different stores that you can buy “free” makeup, there’s really no reason to actually spend money on it.

    Posted by seesawstar | August 26, 2008, 7:55 am
  29. Coupons, coupons, coupons

    Posted by Julie | August 26, 2008, 7:58 am
  30. I have a friend at church who is allergic to lots of eye makeup. I told her one day that I’d take her samples off her hands when she gets those bonus bags at the makeup counters. She was so excited to give them to me, that now she goes ahead and gets the bag, whether she’ll use only one of the items or not and gives the rest to me! Why spend the moolah when you haven’t tried it yet? Now, I get to sample for free!:-)

I also use moisturizer with sunscreen in it–2-in-1!

Posted by Jessica Sheets | August 26, 2008, 8:00 am
  31. Instead of spending $13 every couple of weeks to get my eyebrows waxed, I keep a pair of tweezers in the glove compartment of my car. Every Sunday morning on the way to church, I pluck my eyebrows. It’s one of the few times I get to ride in my car… and I’m just sitting there. Once a week is just about right for me.

I really feel that a well groomed eyebrow makes my whole face look put together, even if I haven’t put my makeup on yet!

  32. I save money on beauty care by knowing when I can get by with cheaper version of a name brand item. For the items that don’t compare to the name brand, I buy from the cheapest source. That could be drugstore rather than department stores, online or ebay rather than brick and mortar, and I use coupons whenever possible!

    Posted by Tiffany | August 26, 2008, 8:05 am
  33. I save on beauty products by shopping at CVS & Walgreens. I try lots of new products when they are on sale so I can determine if I’d like to keep buying them. I use coupons (of course!) and the rewards programs the stores have set up.

    Posted by Tieshia | August 26, 2008, 8:05 am
  34. This may not be for everyone - but my daughter and I share her baby lotion for face moisturizer.

    Posted by Rachel | August 26, 2008, 8:06 am
  35. My sister and I buy our makeup when it is on sale. We just stocked up on Cover Girl at CVS and K-mart with the BOGO sale and coupon.

    Posted by Jessica | August 26, 2008, 8:08 am
  36. I always wait for merle norman to have a free gift with purchase. I love trying samples of new products.

    Posted by andrea v | August 26, 2008, 8:11 am
  37. I take a mild facial cleanser and mix in a teaspoon of baking soda and make an extra fine facial scrub that doesn’t irritate my extra sensitive skin with harsh smells or extra rough scrub pieces.

    Posted by Rebekah | August 26, 2008, 8:12 am
  38. I save by rethinking the necessities - do I really need it? Will something else do as well? My skin is oily, so instead of moisturizing and applying sunscreen, I just use sunscreen as my daily moisturizer and use a more heavy duty moisturizer at night. Also, witch hazel is a great toner!

    Posted by Michelle | August 26, 2008, 8:12 am
  39. I save money by clipping coupons and watching sales. I also try to keep things to a minimum not wearing much make-up, with a new baby there isn’t much time to do a whole lot.

    Posted by Ashley | August 26, 2008, 8:16 am
  40. I do the oil cleansing method and I buy my make-up at Eyeslipsface.com. There make-up is next to nothing (many items are $1 and you can always find 1/2 off or some type of coupon) and it’s good quality.

    Posted by Heidi | August 26, 2008, 8:23 am
  41. I save money by sticking to the simple things. Also, by knowing what I have in stock so I don’t over-buy health and beauty items.

    Posted by Marianne | August 26, 2008, 8:29 am
  42. When washing my face, I use a product that does double duty — takes of makeup, grime, and moisturizes (Cetpahil does the best job!).

I wash my hair every other day, which makes my shampoo and conditioner last longer.

My 1 year old gets a tubby every day, but only gets soap on days when he’s actually dirty. Otherwise, good old water and a washcloth do the trick. We’re still on the same bottle of J&J from when he was born!

    Posted by Courtney | August 26, 2008, 8:33 am
  43. One way I save money is by buying products that I can sample first. It may cost a little more to purchase from a department store, but being able to try-it-before-you-buy it saves from costly mistakes that end up in the bathroom drawer!

    Thanks!

  45. My tip: Stick with a longer hair cut so you can go longer between cuts! I usually only get mine cut 2-3 times per year and stick with longer, layered styles that look cute as they grow out.

    Posted by Emily | August 26, 2008, 9:06 am
  46. Simple…I watch the ads from the stores that have what I need and buy only when on sale AND with coupons…I save a ton and get everything I like and need!

  47. Water, water, water. It’s true what they say. I’m on campus all day long so I make a point to drink at 2 water fountains in every building I walk through. Water keeps your skin beautiful without cost and it makes you feel better so you naturally look better. Drink up, people!

  48. I love ELF (www.eyeslipsface.com) eye makeup and lip products, and all of their basic makeup products are only $1! I have a review on my site if you want to see what I recommend.

I also stock up when the products I like are on sale, and I read reviews of more expensive products before I try, in hopes of avoiding expensive mistakes.

We have a massage school nearby where I can get an hour long massage for $35 - pretty close to half price - and SO worth it as an occasional treat to myself!

    Great giveaway Amy!!

  49. I shop often at the dollar store. This helps save money on our beauty care. I also don’t spend alot of money on moisturizers that are suppose to help prevent aging, if they really worked every one would be sing them right?

    Posted by Amie | August 26, 2008, 9:14 am
  50. I have very sensitive skin and can only use certain products. The brand I use often offers free gifts with purchase, so I generally only buy when they have the free gift and stock up.

  51. Even when my pump dispensers don’t pump anymore I remove the top and just pour the product out to use it. You would be amazed how much soap or lotion is left in the bottles once the pump stops working.

  53. I try to use the CVS ECBs to get my beauty products for free or nearly free.

    Posted by Stephanie | August 26, 2008, 9:50 am
  54. I use a lot of trial products and I also ask for trials at major stores to see if I really like something before I purchase. Sometimes I find that I really didn’t like the product in question and I am so glad that I tried it first.

We use cetaphil everyday - for all our kids - we have alot of eczema and it works great to not try skin out!

    Posted by Amanda | August 26, 2008, 9:51 am
  55. Coupons, sales and rebates can get you almost everything you need. For professional services like waxing and hair- I open every coupon mailer that comes to the house. There is almost always a new salon with a promo or a stylist trying to build their business. I change salons a lot but its worth it to save 40% on expensive highlights. I just discovered Ulta’s salon has discounts on certain days during certain times.

  58. SAve money on beauty supplies? I put all the liquid hand soap into a foaming bottle so a little hand soap goes a long way when it comes out like foam! I also take the small bits of bath soap and push them together into one new bar! Make up is CVS brand. Lotion is from the Big lots with big tubes of lotion for 90 cents. Shampoo/cream rince is often free samples so I get to use a lot of different brands.

Posted by Lynn Marie | August 26, 2008, 10:03 am
  59. I generally just buy the cheapest item (with or without a coupon) that doesn’t suck. “Suck” of course is subjective, but I’m willing to pay a little extra for something that is higher quality. For example, sometimes the shampoo/etc at the dollar store is really watery, so you end up using more, and you’re not actually saving money.

I also order a lot of samples online, so I don’t even have to buy stuff sometimes.

    Posted by magidraki | August 26, 2008, 10:07 am

  62. I shop the drugstore deals & sales and stock up. I also take advantage of those free samples for the things that don’t matter as much (shampoo/lotion etc). We also shop Big Lots a lot. I also try to stretch my haircuts/colors as long as I can so that I’m not doing it as often and thus spending less!

  64. Although it has taken a few years for me to figure this out…I try to buy just what I need and know works for me.

Even though trying a new product is fun, if you don’t like it or use it, it just sits on the shelf and you waste your money!

    Posted by Jessica | August 26, 2008, 10:31 am
  65. I cut the tops (crimped ends) off the tubes of my cleansers so I can get the rest of the product out that is still left in the bottle. You can go 1 -2 weeks on what’s in there!!!!

I’ve also started shopping at CVS and waiting for makeup to go BOGO or on sale with coupons!

    Posted by Bethany | August 26, 2008, 10:44 am
  66. I get most of my skin care very inexpensively at the drug store. I tend to switch brands a lot - whatever is on sale. One thing I just started doing is using baking soda on my teeth after I brush. My teeth are whiter and feel very clean.

    Posted by Jodi | August 26, 2008, 10:47 am

  68. I don’t use all the fancy products for my skin care b/c I feel that the stuff you can get over the counter works just as well. My grandmother had beautiful skin and used dove soap as long as I knew her. I have continued using that and have just added a good moisturizer before bedtime.

  71. For a simple hair trim, I try to go to Aveda Institute nearby. It’s cheaper than going to a salon since the one who does the service are students and they get graded for their work. It’s a great price for a hair trim plus the perks like a scalp massage and the great products that they use on my hair.

  76. I love the disposable cleansing towelettes but they can get a bit expensive so I only buy them when on sale and with a coupon (go on the manufacturer’s website to request coupons or email them) and when I get them I call all of them in half which is the perfect size!

    Posted by Pati | August 26, 2008, 11:15 am

  79. Saving on Beauty — Don’t buy drugstore makeup. I know this is counter intuitive, but go to the department store or ulta or sephora, get a makeover, or at least try out the product first and then only buy what you know you will use. I have found that the more expensive makeup has better color saturation then drug store stuff, and if you only buy what you love, you know you will use it. Plus, you can return things if you decide it was a mistake or doesn’t work in the “real” world.

  81. One way to save money on beauty supplies is:

When the lipstick tube is out but you still have some you can get too…. I take a lip brush and dig it out. I stick the extra in one section of a Weekly pill box. That way I can use a lip brush to get all the extra I would have missed other wise… also you can mix the colors together to get a whole new awesome shade!

  90. For a nice gentle scrub, try mixing Cetaphil face cleanser (or Equate’s brand is great) w/a little baking soda. Also - read Paula Begoun’s books…she calls herself the Cosmetics Cop and has saved me lots of $$$$.

  101. I always share & swap my beauty products with my sisters or girl friends. I know a lot of us (if not most) never finish using a bottle of nail polish. So when I get tired of the color, I give it away to other girls and vice versa. Sometimes I try new beauty products and they don’t turn out to be what I wanted or agree with my skin, I also give them away to someone who can use it.

That way I won’t be spending money on expensive surgeries, lasers, or other procedures to keep my skin looking good. It’s also cheaper than any of the cancer treatments I have ever heard of!

  119. I get my eyebrows waxed at the beauty college… It’s waaayyy cheaper than going to a salon… And much better than if I do it at home…. Once I waxed off skin as well as hair!….

I also use leftover conditioner to shave my legs….

  120. I try to go cheap, but I don’t do all generic, so CVS deals and product freebies have helped me get/try the beauty supplies I want, but at a fraction of the cost. Cetaphil facial cleanser is great because it goes a really long way.

  128. I usually get all of my makeup at CVS now, which makes it free or almost free! But I think my switch to mineral pressed powder foundation is the best thing I’ve done. I’ve always been a liquid foundation plus powder girl, but that get’s expensive when you have to buy both foundation and powder. I finally tried the pressed powder foundation and it works so much better than anything I’ve ever used! It seems to last longer, it stays on my face, even during very hot days, and it looks SO nice. Plus, it’s extremely fast to put on!

  129. How I save on beauty supplies. Well thanks to Money Saving Mom — CVS has been my new best friend!! It’s crazy the deals you can score there. Also, I’m a Clinique girlie, and I try to hit up the freebies on bonus time.

  130. I save by getting my hair cut and highlighted at the local beauty school. You can’t beat a haircut and full highlight for $40! Unless you do it yourself… and believe me, I’ve done that too.

    Posted by Cara | August 27, 2008, 5:29 am
  131. I taught myself how to cut hair when my husband and I were first married. I’m the only one that pays to get a haircut (even I’m not frugal enough to do my own hair).

  132. We usually try to save our coupons and make a trip to walmart, where the prices are already low. Since I live in NYC, we can’t always make it to Walmart, so instead we save our Duane Reade coupon for $5 back (after every $100 spent) and use it to buy something (with a coupon). It comes out free or more than free.

Another way we do it is buying in bulk at BJs with the inlaws or with Cetaphil, my dermatologist gave some free samples that I loved. I don’t go to the dermatologist much, but when I do he always offers to give me a few sample sizes.

It’s a good tip to remember to see if your drs (pediatricians, dermatologists, eye doctors, etc) have samples for Cetaphil, Suntan Lotion, Visine, Advil, etc. These can help cut down on monthly grocery bills and also let you know what you like.

After I tried Cetaphil, I was really impressed at how great it made my skin feel and started using it more regularly!

  133. One way I save money is to use the least amount I can get by with. I have very dry skin, so I have to have quality products…in the end, if I skimp some, I can make the bottle of facial lotion last a LOT longer!

Posted by Katie Meyer | August 27, 2008, 6:13 am
  134. Free samples! I try to always ask for samples first, I have wasted lots of money on cosmetics that I end up not liking later on, especially perfumes. Plus the little samples are great to tuck away in a small purse on a night out.

    Posted by Karen | August 27, 2008, 6:20 am
  135. One way I save is to buy the largest container of the product that is available and use a coupon matched with a sale. It lasts me forever and the unit price is so much cheaper than buying many of the smaller sizes!

  136. No makeup except some nice tinted chapstick. Nothing to clog the pores. Eat good, healthy whole foods and little processed food. Skin will show it without the need for extra products.

    Posted by Brook | August 27, 2008, 7:23 am
  138. Only purchase makeup from department stores when they are giving away freebies. Every few months a new freebie is available when you spend a certain amount of money at the beauty counter. My grandmother has been giving me her ‘freebies’ since I was a little girl. In essence, I’ve never paid for makeup.

Posted by One Frugal Girl | August 27, 2008, 8:01 am
  139. I actually don’t bother with make up unless I am going somewhere with friends or to church. I work at mother’s day out and don’t wear make up to that either. It helps stretch out my makeup more because I love clinique makeup and it can get expensive. God bless, Amanda

    Posted by Amanda | August 27, 2008, 8:30 am
  140. Local massage classes often give massages for a fraction of the price. Beauty schools can color and cut your hair along with manicures and pedicures, again, for a fraction of the price.

Don’t buy chapstick (or anything in a tube), buy one of the screw-top “pots” of lip balm. You’ll use it more carefully, your lips will thank you, and one pot lasts me through 4-5 chapstick tubes.

  145. ONE WAY TO SAVE MONEY ON BEAUTY NEEDS IS…..Define NEEDS from WANTS. Keep it simple.

“Do I need that or do I want it because the girl wearing it is what I want to look like.”

Cetaphil is one of the best products because it is so simple and pure. It does the job with no side effects.

I have learned that beauty doesn’t guarantee you happiness. Everywhere you turn, the message is that physical beauty is the ultimate cure. It might seem like the perfect body or a flawless face would make life easier. I have learned that is one ugly lie. What you see is Not what you get!! I stoped comparing myself to photos in magazines or beauty ads. Seriously, stop it! You will never look as good as those models, because outside of that glossy universe, even those models don’t look that good!!

    Posted by Bryanna | August 27, 2008, 11:49 am
  146. I do my own pedicures now (money saver no. 1!), but back when I used to go to the salon, the nail tech. used a combination of baby oil and table salt to exfoliate my legs. Now I use that mixture at home for a great body scrub. (money saver no. 2!)

  155. I buy generic when I can. Some products, like face wash, I can’t find a generic that works well for me. But on items like conditioner, I get generic. I also try to minimize the amount of beauty products I use by simplifying my routine and going for a more natural look.

  158. Well, I save money by doing my own pedicures. I like to take a big pan of water outside in the sun and sit and soak my feet while I get some healthy vitamin D. I generally relax for a bit with my Bible or a good magazine and then when my skin has softened I go to work on them. I sand, scrape, buff, clip etc. It’s just a wonderfully inexpensive experience.

  160. I have a lot of children (4 under 4) which means I get exactly 2 minutes for my beauty regimen. I am forced to keep it simple, focus on the application and tune everything else out, and only buy products that I’m actually going to be able to use in that 2 minute timeframe. We love Cetaphil in my family 2 of my children have severe eczema and all we use is Cetaphil.

  166. I noticed a lot of people already said “get sleep!”, so I won’t repeat. I save by keeping my skin in good shape, using washes and moisturizers daily. When my skin is healthy and looks good, I don’t feel the need to wear foundation. Most days I don’t wear any makeup at all!

Of course, I also only buy makeup when it’s free or really cheap.

  170. I use the cheapest shampoo & conditioner I can find, like from Sam’s, I can’t tell that much of a difference. I only get my haircut twice a year, I keep it long, so I can cut it off to my shoulders twice a year, and then let it grow back out between cuts.

  171. I actually use cornstartch to make my traslucent powder stretch, I buy the powder one shade too dark, mix the cornstartch in with it and voila. I find translucent powder to be one of my more expensive beauty buys and making it last longer really helps.

  176. I watch advertisements for sales, then pair the sale up with coupons. When my favorite bath & body store (which I won’t name here–ha ha!) has it’s semi-annual mega-sale, I stockpile–shower gels, body sprays and cremes, and loofahs. Love those loofas for rough elbows and heels! My moisturizer is my real life-saver, though… I haven’t worn foundation in about 3 years, and my skin is the clearest it has ever been!

    Posted by Ditarae | August 29, 2008, 7:51 am
  177. Water, water & water!!! Drink lot’s of water and it rejuvinates me, perks me up, fills me up and makes my skin & hair look great!

Also, conditioner in lieu of shaving cream! When you condition your hair, wipe a bit on you and then shave while you let your rinse sit. It works great and leaves your sking feeling amazing!

Another good idea for makeup (especially for my teen daughters) is ELF, which is a line of makeup that you can purchase at Target or online and everything is only $1.00. It’s good stuff too!
I also used to be a hairdresser (a looong time ago) so I do our hair color and cuts most of the time.

  184. I always get hair cuts at the local beauty school (I know it might sound scary, but they’re just trimming my hair, or giving it a style for a special event, nothing new or crazy, so happily no horror stories to report!), it’s sometimes less than half of what my crazy sister pays for a cut! Also when it comes to things like moisturizers or even shampoo and conditioner, I stick to drug store brands…especially with things like shampoo, if you compare the labels from the expensive brand to the drug store they’re almost identical!

  188. Olive oil is a great skin softener if you add it to your bath AND equal parts of quick cooking oats and water makes a GREAT facial.

  189. Beauty care items are really expensive so I always try to watch the sales and then use my coupons at the same time the item is on sale. It helps quite a bit.

  190. My friends and I do product swaps every so often, where I give the products I bought, tried, and didn’t like to others, and get some in return. This way nothing gets wasted, and we can try lots of products without having to pay for lots!

  191. I read blog reviews, but you have to do it carefully. I often find the reviews are for over-priced products that I’d never use anyway, but every once in a while, I come across a product where the review really strikes a chord with me. Only then will I order a product and usually, it’s with a coupon offered by that blog. I also have to trust the blogger. I’ve found some review blogs where they just feature insanely expensive products and I find I just don’t trust them.

Another thing I’ve found helpful is to enter giveaways for products (as should be obvious, lol). When I win, I get to try beauty products out for free. On one occasion, I found I really didn’t like the product I won (which I had been considering buying). On another occasion, I found we liked the shampoo I won. That way, we buy what we know works and can skip the other stuff.

  192. I wait for a good sale and then I buy a few packages to store under the sink. Target is notorious for putting beauty items on clearance. They always have “bonus” bundles of products and clearance them out after a few months. When I see a two pack of facial cleaner on clearance for less than the price of 1 I just have to buy it!

  193. Wow, thanks for offering this great giveaway! My money-saving tip is to use coupons and rebates for beauty items. I have gotten some wonderful stuff this way - last week I got a bunch of St. I’ves face wash and exfoliant for FREE! What a deal!

  194. My tip is to see if you can find beauty schools around your neighborhood. We found one and I only spend about $7.00 in haircuts for me and about $20-$30 in color. They do a great job and this is a great way to save.
This is an amazing giveaway. It would be terrific if we could win. Our son has very sensitive skin and we have been using this product since he was two wks old.

  195. I used to buy expensive Clinque make-up, but now I’m getting most of my products free from Walgreens using the Easy-Saver catalog!

  196. The way that I’ve been saving the most money lately on beauty products would have to be stacking coupons at walgreens. They’ve had a lot of buy on get on free sales also that I’ve been able to to use coupons on too. Just the other week I was able to pick up some oxy clean this way

  197. My best tip, one used by many others, is utilizing “free after rebate” to the max !! If I can buy something free after rebate and combine with a coupon, I am all over that deal !!

  198. I buy when on sale and combine a coupon. I just found a site called ELF that sells most products for $1 so I may try that.

  199. I buy store brand instead of name brand and that usually saves me a bundle. I also stock up when the drug stores have coupons and rebates for particular items.

  200. We squeeze every last drop out of everything from toothpaste to lotion. It’s saved us a lot of money to finish off what we already have.

  201. I find a makeup/face wash/lotion that works and that I love and I stick with it. I had been trying so many kinds and that was costing me more than I realised because even though I could take them back if I didn’t like them, I never did. So, I have a cheap lotion that I love, but my makeup runs a bit more. I save for that and buy JUST that makeup and make it last. I no longer say, “let me just try that one….” It seems silly, but when I added it up, we were spending almost $100 a year on me just saying, “oh, let’s try this…” and we never liked it. I suppose, overall just not buying stuff on sale just because it is on sale.

  202. I go to my local beauty college to receive a massage and good shampoo for less than $40.

  203. Due to my sensitive skin, I can only use certain products. I always keep coupons handy even if I don’t need it a the moment, in case I find one of them on clearance or on sale for a great deal.

  204. One way I save is swapping skills. I met another mom who is a hair stylist. She now cuts/styles my hair (which in the DC metro area is a huge savings) and in exchange I help her out with her son, and teach her more skills such as sewing and gardening.

  205. I love using free samples when I have a few minutes to myself. It’s a great way to pamper myself. I also love Walgreens for great beauty deals. Using the EasySaver program I’m able to get lots of products that I wouldn’t normally be able to afford.

  208. I don’t limit myself to certain brands but use coupons…..try to do CVS specials or BOGO.

  209. Coconut oil. It has many uses in the beauty kit!

  210. I love the simplicity of the cetaphil line. Would love to win a whole pack and try new products. Thanks :)

  211. I have spent tons of money trying to find solutions to my acne struggles. Recently, I found a friend who is certifying in aromatherapy. She has to use people as case studies so she gave me a little bottle of oil (tea tree) and all I have to do is tell her if it works or not. I use hardly any each day (same little bottle for a month now) and it has been wonderful, clearing up my acne and keeping it gone! There are lots of different oils to help with several skin afflictions: burns, scars, etc.

  212. I try samples or word of advice from friends… That way I can try before I buy. I hae senstive skin and sometimes products will cause bumps, but if I have a sample and it does that, than I know not to buy it.

  213. I try to use up what I have before buying more. No buying new products until mine are gone.

    Posted by amy | September 2, 2008, 8:10 am
  214. I check out all the websites/blogsites advertising sales, coupons, samples, and etc. as a way to save. I am a religious reader of http://www.theshoppingqueen.com, http://www.atlantamoms.com, http://www.freebies4mom.blogspot.com, among others. I also subscribe to local drug and grocers weekly ads via e-mail to see who’s got the best deal of the week for whatever I need.

  215. A friend of mine and I team up on Sundays and hit CVS, using our different Extra Care cards. Sometimes her card prints out coupons I need, so we figure out our scenarios according to cards, coupons, and ECB offers. When we are done, we divide up the goods based on who needs what. Also, if we don’t particularly like a product or a sample we give it to the other person so they can try it.

Since I have sensitive skin I use Cetaphil everyday… which isn’t cheap! I use coupons and sales but it is still hard to get Cetaphil for “free.” I would love to win this basket! Thanks for the chance, Sarah

  216. I combine coupons and store sales to get the best price some times I get things free.

  217. One way I save money is by using my sister - a cosmotologist! She dyes my hair, cuts my hair, even comes to my house for an eyebrow wax! I haven’t paid for any of that i
