  1. Favorite household tip: Vinegar through your coffee pot. If it’s dripping verrrrrrrrrry slow when you make your morning pot of coffee, run white vinegar through it a couple of times. (And then plain water after that.) Gets the gunk out and you’ll have faster coffee the next morning! And faster coffee is good coffee!

  2. To keep the awful diaper smell from stinking up the house, when I change a dirty diaper, I put it in a ziploc baggie!

  3. My favorite household tip is courtesy of my mother-in-law. She is known in our family for being able to get out almost any set-in stain on clothing. Her secret? Murphy’s oilsoap. She will let it set for a little bit, then scrub with a toothbrush, wash, and voila!

  4. Favorite Household tip: To help towels dry quicker with my top loading washing machine: Make sure to shake them out so they aren’t all wadded up before putting them into the dryer. Instead of throwing them right into the dryer from the washer I shake them out so they look like towels again and just lay them in there. Now I don’t have to run them through the dryer cycle for ANOTHER time and make doing laundry take even longer than it has to.

  5. I love to never waste a trip. In a split level house, you have to limit the activities. Grab and go.

  6. My favorite household tips:

We eat a lot of bananas in our house, but we always seem to have one or two that end up getting too brown to enjoy: Take your bananas apart when you get home from the store. If you leave them connected at the stem, they ripen faster.

My son also doesn’t like all the “strings” on the bananas, so we do this: Peel a banana from the bottom and you won’t have to pick the little ’stringy things’ off of it. That’s how the primates do it.

  7. Another vinegar tip - Do you have a bedwetter? (I do!) Use vinegar in the rinse cycle, you can put it in your fabric softener dispenser, and it will get rid of the urine odor. I use it in my HE front loading machine and it works great!

  11. Use (and recycle) your toilet paper tubes by using them to start seeds. Cut the bottom of the tubes and fold in to create a mini-pot. Plant seeds in soil and tend as usual. When the seedling is ready to be transplanted outside, just plant it in the tube–it’ll decompose as the plant grows!

  12. If I forget my towels in the washing machine and they get that yucky smell, I just add some vinegar and then put them through the rinse cycle and they come out smelling fresh!!

  13. My favorite household tip is that I have come up with a schedule to clean up my house. For example today, tuesday, I clean the bathrooms and tomorrow I clean the den and dining room. It has really helped with having 2 small kids to stay on top of the housework. Usually I clean for 15 min and then I am done!

  14. My favorite tip is to use liquid fabric softener in pots and pans with cooked on food. Leave overnight and the food will lift off a lot easier.

  15. My favorite tip is an organizational one. Instead of letting mail pile up on the counter, there are three baskets right by the door: one for important pieces of mail (bills, etc), one for things that need to be shredded (credit card applications, etc), and one that goes right to recycling. Since most of what we get isn’t important, it makes it so much easier to find the mail we really need and get rid of the rest right away!

  16. Disinfectant wipes - - keep a small container of them under each bathroom and/or kitchen sink. It makes wiping down the countertops a couple times a week a breeze which means you can always have a clean sink area. So simple that your kids can do it; they just have to get into the habit.

  24. My favorite household tip it Febreze. I don’t always have time to deep clean the house before company arrives. When I only have a little time, I spray Febreze and the house will smell fresh.

  26. Something I’ve found helpful in keeping my storage bins organized is to number each bin, then on an index card, (one for each bin with the corresponding number on it,) I list the contents of each bin. Then index cards are stored in a recipe file box, that I use to hold address cards, rather than having an address book.

  28. Another vinegar household tip! Just like my grandmother, I use vinegar, water and baking soda in a clean spray bottle for most of my cleaning. It costs next to nothing, it’s safe for the environment, and most importantly it is safe around my children and pets.

  30. I pack a lunch for my husband every day and just rinse and reuse the zipper bags. For dry things (like nuts) I just repack, and for wet things (like veggies or apple slices) I just rinse it out before repacking. I throw them away at the end of the week. I did have to condition my hubby a little at first - he was throwing them away at work!

  32. I see a lot of vinegar tips already! But my tip is: get your kids to help! I take a mixture of vinegar and water, put it in a spray bottle and let them go to town. I have 4 boys and they LOVE to help mom clean windows (I know… their wives will LOVE me someday!), they clean floors, tables, counters, milk splatters from cabinet fronts… And they can use all they want to, if they get it on their skin (or in their mouthes, it’s happened before!) then there is no danger of them getting sick or having to go to the emergency room (we do that enough!).

Also, you can’t be too picky… it’s free help and with several children, I say someone’s bound to get SOMETHING cleaned!

  35. I use plain white washcloths (I bought them cheap at Walmart) as washcloths and wipe rags for my toddler twins. I use one to wipe them at the end of a meal, then wipe their highchairs down and put it in a bucket under the sink. Three a day, and they all get bleached back to white in the hot wash. They’re more sturdy than those teeny baby washcloths, and we go through a ton of them!

Sprinkle cinnamon in your child’s sandbox to keep the bugs away.

  39. Favorite household tip…I line my vegetable and meat drawers in my fridge with a section of the newspaper. That way, when packages of meat leak, or my veggie drawer gets full of yucky bits, I just pull the newspaper out and have a clean drawer!

  40. Two tips:

Ivory bar soap gets rid of 99% of stains

Cleaning wipes under each counter (I buy the Kirkland store brand from Costco, they come three to a pack, 1 kitchen, 1 guest bathroom, 1 master bath)and a scissors nearby in case a whole wipe is unnecessary.

  50. I like the following advice that was found on the website:
I always rewrite the expiration date on my egg carton in black magic marker on the end facing the open refrigerator door. Then, when they are close to expiring, I can boil them so they don’t go to waste.

  51. My favorite household tip is to hang baskets on your staircase - one at the top and one at the bottom. They can collect things during the day that needs to go up and down, and it’ll save you many a trips. Or, if you’re busy organizing the house and your help is doing something else, you can stick a backpack on your dog and have her carry things up and down the stairs for you =)

  61. I put all my cleaning supplies in a mop bucket (bathroom cleaner, windex, sponge, etc) and store it in one place. That way it is all together when you need it and it takes up less space (not one for every bathroom, etc).

I cut up old t-shirts for rags. They are so soft, the perfect size (since you determine the size) and of course free!

  68. Ziploc bags! Some uses: puzzle pieces and picture from the front; felt board and pieces; different coin denominations (for wrapping or using for school); travel container for cotton balls and Q-tips; etc.; etc. I also re-use used bags for smelly jobs such as sealing up dirty diapers and cotton balls that are saturated with nail polish remover.

  75. I use non-stick spray for more then spraying my bakeware. I spray in a measuring cup when I am measuring shortening, peanut butter or honey. I helps them to slide right out. I also spray it in plastic wear if I am storing tomato based products like chili, spaghetti or soups. It prevents that orange tint stain.

    Posted by Wendi | August 26, 2008, 8:39 am
  76. My favorite household tip: I make a list of what is in my kitchen cabinets and fridge/freezer. It’s basically an inventory so that I don’t buy something that I don’t need and so I’ll know what I have available for meals/baking. I put the list on the inside of the cabinet door so it’s right there. It’s saved me SO MUCH time and money. When something on the list gets low I add it to the grocery list. The little “locker-sized” dry erase boards work really well for this too if you don’t want to use paper.

  78. I love the fresh scent my clothes have when they are fresh out of the dryer but over time, the fresh scent goes away. I have an old wooden closet that has a slight odor about it and my clothes tend to pick it up. To keep my clothes smelling fresh, I tape dryer sheets on the bottom of my hangers and then hang my clothes over them.

    Posted by Sarah | August 26, 2008, 8:56 am
  80. I used to hate meal planning. Then I found a system that works for me. :)

I made a huge list of every meal I like to make and eat. Then I divided that list into categories (this can be by meat or by preparation method, or type of cuisine, etc.). Then I made weekly groupings by taking one of each category. In the end, I have 8 lists of 6 meals each.

Then, when I’m about to go shopping, I can just look at the page and pick which of the 8 lists looks best to me for that week. For me, each list has one Mexican meal, one soup, one sandwich, one Italian meal, one Asian meal, and one American meal.

I hope that makes sense. It’s hard to describe without seeing what it looks like.

  83. I bought a one dollar photo album and then wrote on index cards what household chores I need to do on each weekday. I then use a dry erase marker to mark it off. 84. Hanging on the inside of my kitchen pantry door, I have a cleaning schedule for the week. I break it down day by day so it doesn’t seem so overwhelming. If I want to get it all done in one or two days - great. But this way, I have small tasks assigned to each day of the week so I can be done in no time.

    Posted by Sarah | August 26, 2008, 9:06 am
  85. I put huge plastic sheets under my baby’s highchair. Buy ‘em at a fabric store - not the expensive printed ones you can buy at retail shops. Use ‘em for a week - toss scraps outside after each meal. Discard all together when soiled (usually a week).

  87. Favorite Household Tip:

WINDEX! It is AWESOME for spot cleaning carpet… even spots that have been there forever…AND for cleaning spots on clothes before you launder them…

It is my new best friend around the house.

Like Gus on my Big Fat Greek Wedding…’ put some windex on it!”

  88. Invest in some of those eco-bags. I was tired of having a ton of plastic bags around the house and polluting the earth. I use them for everything - carry items places, my groceries, etc. They are very sturdy and carry quite a lot.

    Posted by Nicole | August 26, 2008, 9:16 am
  89. Something I did to make it easier for the kids (9 & 11) to take out the trash, I drlled little holes about 3 inches from the bottom of the plastic trash can. About 7 on each long side. This way, there is no fighting with the bag, no matter how full it gets. The holes make it to where the bag will not create a vacuum in the can.

  90. I love reading everyone’s tips! I am another vinegar lover, in the coffeepot, down the drain with baking soda, in the rinse dispenser for my dishwasher (thanks for that one, Amy!)

I also use baby wipes and my dirt devil to clean up after my daughter-a quick suck and swipe in her highchair and on the tile underneath does wonders!

  92. A great household tip: If you have white porcelain sinks either in the kitchen or bathrooms, instead of pouring clorax in the sinks to get the stains out, pour some dishwasher detergent (Cascade). Only use a small amount either gel or powder and let set overnight and in the morning they will be sparking white!!

  93. During the summer barefoot season my kids get splinters in their feet that they hate having me try to remove with tweezers. So, I use a banana peel instead. Just cut a 1″ square off a banana peel and place it on the splinter yellow side out and put a sock over it to hold it on. I usually do this during naptime or overnight. When they wake up it is easy to just scrape the splinter away - don’t ask me why.

This way when I want that recipe I saw and clipped, I have it readily accessible. I also have my husband’s favorite cheesecake recipe from his great grandmother written in there. It’s great.

  114. My favorite household tip is for how to clean dirty sports clothes. For the odor, add a small dose of ammonia to your laundry. It gets rid of the stinky smell. For the stains, if it is mud then put laundry soap &/or stain remover directly on it and scrub the mixture in. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes before washing it in very HOT water. Add a little ammonia to the water too. For my son’s football pants, I put Spray n Wash, laundry detergent and Murphy’s oil soap on the mud & grass stains. Mix your stain removers together for a better result!! *Caution, never mix bleach & ammonia together, it is toxic!

  141. I have household of 7. We host 3 college age girls and have an open door policy. It seems as tho we have people over to eat ALL the time. In order for me to not go insane I’ve learned a few tips on hosting and kitchens. First - label things. I just reorganized my recycling and trash - EACH can has a label. Second - put a magnet on your dishwasher and have two papers - one marked clean, one marked dirty. Third - keep fridge organized with, continuing on with labeling - I tend to even use masking tape and mark containers letting people know that things need to be eaten.

  164. I have a couple of tips to help in the kitchen. First, make a menu, whether it’s for a week or the whole month. I hate trying to decide what to make for dinner every day, so if I take a little time and plan it out, I no longer have to come up with something every day, it’s already done, I just check the menu to see what to make.
The other tip is to save leftovers in a bag in the freezer. Those little bits of meat and vegetables, anything that would be ok to have in a soup. Save them up and then create a freezer soup by adding broth or tomatoes and water and seasoning. It keeps me from wasting my little leftovers. I have been told that fish isn’t a good choice for this!

  178. My household tip is regarding plain old ordinary vinegar. I live in a small town that is near a cement plant. Cement dust gets on everything….the cars, the windows, etc. This does not come off with soap and water…nor does it come off with the expensive fancy car washes…We use plain old vinegar and water and the cement dust comes off just like that and leaves a very nice shiny surface, especially on windows. I also use vinegar to occasionally spritz the carpet with as when it dries, it removes odors ( there is no vinegar smell when it dries). I also use it in my dish washer as a rinse agent. Vinegar is cheap and very versatile!!!

  187. Favorite Household Tip: Use as little as necessary! You don’t need to use the full amount of detergent, dishwasher soap, dish soap, shampoo, all-purpose fill-the-bucket-with-water cleaner, that is recommended on the product label. Often you can get by with 1/2 the amount of even less–1/3 of a dryer sheet works fine in my laundry. Gradually reduce the amount you use and you’ll see that things still get just as clean.

My favorites are the little zipper one from Target and the free one I got from Wishbone…. There are a million and one uses, and if I lose one or something happens they’re only $1 to replace!

  195. Put clean laundry away in the drawers and dressers as soon as you fold it. Oh, and fold it as soon as it comes out of the dryer. Don’t leave baskets of clean clothes and linens sitting around. Put the stuff away right away.

  197. My tip - reuse those plastic shower liners by running them through the washing machine. I often put the shower curtain with a load of rugs or things to bleach. Then I tumble dry on low, but just for a minute. Do not leave the room! Then I just rehang and let air dry up the remaining droplets.

    This is a great prize.

My favorite household tip: start ‘em young on chores. My 2 year old son LOVES to help me unload the dishwasher and we name the things as he pulls them out (spoon, fork, etc). 205. My favorite household tip and my general rule I try to live by is to pick up general “clutter” (toys, pillows, etc), clean off counters, and make sure dishes are not in the kitchen sink before I leave the house. Just those couple of things make the house “look and feel clean” even if its not!

Posted by Erica Loeser | August 26, 2008, 7:08 pm
  206. I have a three section net basket that hangs in my laundry room. When the kids have dirty socks, I fold each pair together and use one section of the basket for one child and another section for the other child. I unfold the socks when I’m ready to wash them and put a handful of pairs of socks in a lingerie bag.

Again, I keep one child’s socks in one lingerie bag and the other child’s in another bag. This saves me time from determining what sock is whose. I also mark their socks with a letter, shape, or number so that I can easily match the pairs together. This prevents from one sock being used more than another but allows for equal use.

When done, remove sponges (careful-they’re hot!) and wipe down the inside of the microwave with a dishcloth or papertowel. Viola!

  285. My favorite tip is to do many small things when you can to avoid long cleaning sessions: multitask, break up the job, or do it right away–anything you can do quickly. Wipe the sink and mirror in the bath every morning or evening, sort and toss mail while on the phone, make the bed when you get up, do the dishes right away after each use. I don’t enjoy taking hours and hours to clean so my hours get split into small allocations all week. I’m happy, my kids are happy and the house is relatively clean.

  287. I have a couple: one of my favorites is putting a quarter of fabric softner and the rest water in a squirt bottle and spraying your couch, beds and anything else you want with it. It’s just like fabreeze. I also like to use peroxide. I use it to clean mirrors (no streaks and no bad odor) and soak our tooth brushes in a cup full.

  293. My favorite household tip/time saver is have your children help with cleaning, we use a swivel sweeper and they love using it to clean the floors. It is light and easy to use, rechargeable and picks up messes on tile or carpet with ease. See more about this tip on my blog. http://twurl.nl/clvd2k (here is the direct link shortened for this post.)
Another tip for busy moms is teaching your children to cook…I have started doing this by teaching my 4 yr old son to make his own scrambled eggs in the microwave. Learn

  294. The Bathroom cleaning is my least favourite task, but recently have started using a Window Cleaner squeegee to clean the water off the Glass after each shower. I leave the Squeegee there for other members of the household to use to. A couple of minutes and what use to be a chore is compeleted hassle free :-)

    The other Tip is:
Cleaning Wine or grape juice spills on the carpet. As soon as the spill occurs pour salt (or sugar) on the stain. The Salt soakes up the colouring and leaves the carpet stain free :-) And it much cheaper than the fancy stain removal chemicals.

  295. I hope we’ve all tried to cut back on the plastic bags from the store, but those of us with indoor cats will still put them to good use. To organize the plastic bags hang on to an empty tissue box (I cover mine completely with duct tape for a sturdy, funky look but you can just do around the opening if you like) and stuff the bags in one at a time so that when you go back to get one it pulls out just like a tissue. I have a few of these around the house: you can fit two dozen or more in a nice-sized box that takes up almost no room and you’ll always know where they are! I’ve even taped them up and given them as extra holiday gifts and everyone raved about them.

  299. My favorite household tip is to shine my kitchen sink with windex every evening before I go to bed. Even if I am too wiped out from the day (homeschooling a senior, 5th grade, 2nd grad, kindergarten an an autisitc 2 year old) and have to rinse and stack dirty dishes on the counter, if my sink is shined I feel terrific in the morning!

  305. Halfway through the dryer cycle, stop the dryer and clean out the lint screen. Most of the lint accumulates at the beginning of the cycle, slowing things down. When you clear it out partway through, you speed up the drying, saving energy and time.

  306. If you are a mother; you probably have pets also. Sometimes they leave a mess on the carpet and continue during their potty training. A great way to get them to stop is to get the smell out with vinegar. Use a cloth and soak up as much as possible before pouring vinegar on the area of the animal mess. Then after a few minutes soak that up with another cloth. Soon you will notice they won’t go on the carpet any more. =)

  307. Adding vinegar to the wash cycle works wonders. You can add it directly to to the wash with detergent and you can also use it as a fabric softener (which is even okay for cloth diapers and towels–two things that lose absorbency with other fabric softeners). You just need to be sure the clothes dry completely. If they’re left damp, you’ll still have the vinegar smell, but if they’re completely dry, there’s no hint of it.

  310. Whenever I wash a pair of shoes, I place them on their sides at the bottom of the fridge . The warm air blowing inside them helps dry them better. I also do this with my husband’s work boots at night. I usually spray a little disinfectant or Febreze first, he wakes up with fresh, dry boots.

  311. ONE of my favorite household tips are to create “A Board”. I use a dry erase board and write my kids names,if they do chores, help out, anything that is good, they get a star, bad behavior gets a check mark, three checks=grounded,1 day,etc…10 stars=prize(I keep a “prize” box) My kids have a love/hate relationship with “the Board”. It works so much better than time outs, they really try to earn stars.I stock up on prizes @ dollar stores,wal-mart etc, This is the only way homework, chores, etc gets done. The parents I babysit for have asked me to create them “boards”. Try it.

  322. Use your favorite multi-purpose house cleaner throughout the house. Many times a simple solution works best such as vinegar and water or other common ingredients rather than a cleaner for wood, for bathroom, for kitchen, for tile, for countertop, for glass, etc. The power of ONE is much better and more economical.

  328. My household tip is if you want to clean your microwave - put some water in a cup or mug and turn on the microwave. After a few seconds the steam from the water will loosen any stuck food. Speaking of microwave, you can also stick your sponges in there for 30 seconds, which will kill all the germs (just make sure they are wet so they don’t catch on fire).

Also, I fold my laundry as soon as I get it out of the dryer. That way, if I don’t get to put it all away that day it is still easy to find whatever I need in the basket.

  335. One of my favorite tips is from being green before green was a way to be. I have lived in several other countries that don’t enjoy the many things that we easily take advantage of here in the US. Rinse out ziploc bags (we used to make one box last nearly a year!), open your windows - I can hardly stand it to see all the neighbors shut in on a gorgeous 70 degree day, basically with every chore you do, think if there is more conservative way to do it!

close the door to your bathroom and turn on the hot water in the shower and let the bathroom steam up AND then clean your bathroom as it helps with set in stains especially on the shower wall and/or shower curtain plus it’s a little pick me up from sitting in the steam if you stay in there while lettin the water run.

Also finger nail polish remover takes PERMANENT MARKER stains out of anything.

If you’re ever out of cleaning solution; you can always mix vinegar with some lemon juice.

  338. My favorite household tip is… get the husband to clean it! :) Just kidding…

My best tip is really daily upkeep. Clean dishes as you use them, wipe down counters, sinks, and toilets daily. Clean up clutter daily in fifteen to twenty minute intervals. Sort mail immediately. Every little bit helps.

I also save the big ticket cleaning items like cleaning the floors and bathrooms for my day off. (I work two jobs and go to school full-time so every once in awhile I get a day off.)

  348. My wife makes her own baby wipes and laundry detergent to cut costs. I can’t recall where she got the recipe but - For the baby wipes, she just boils 2 cups water for 5 minutes and adds 1 Tablespoon of baby shampoo, baby oil, lotion, and vinegar to the water after the water boils. She then cuts viva or bounty paper towels in half (my dad does this w/a saw) and then folds them on top of each other and places them in a baby wipe container (each half goes in a container and this recipe makes two containers). Then she pours the water on top. They work great at a fraction of the cost.

  377. My 4 kids help with the recycling, compost bin and garden - it has really taught them a lot! Thanks for the opportunity to win the $50 visa card - I sure could use it!!

  378. The one-minute rule - if it’ll only take a minute, no matter what it is, DO IT! That might be wiping down the sink, putting a dish directly into the dishwasher, or bringing that laundry to the laundry room, but if I get it done then, it won’t pile up and get overwhelming.

  379. Let kids help! I started early with my oldest and now at 2 1/2, she can clean up her own toys and loves to help with other chores. My 1 year old is even learning how to put toys in the toy box. It takes longer with “help,” but feel they are learning valuable lessons about taking care of our home!

  380. My favorite tip is so simple, yet so often overlooked. Put it away when you are finished! If you use a glass, rinse and place in the dishwasher. When you finish fold laundry, go ahead and take an extra minute to place it where it goes. Otherwise, all these little tasks pile up and you have an hour of odds and ends to do.

  381. My household tip

To teach my husband to help me :)

  382. Listerine (original)has multi-purpose usage: used as a floor cleaner, works for the itching brought on by poison ivy and oak, get rid of toenail fungus, works wonders for preventing lice infestation-rub it into the scalp, and then rinse it out, works as a cure for cradle cap, but it noted that anyone using it for that purpose needs to avoid getting it into the child’s eyes…product was trumpeted as a dandruff treatment in the early 1900s-users were instructed to massage it into their scalps before shampooing to keep the dandruff away.

  383. I have hung “mailboxes” outside of my children’s rooms. It has made communication so much easier and now that some of them are older, they get quite a bit of mail and it never gets lost in the paper pile!

    Posted by Tami | September 2, 2008, 12:11 pm
  384. I used to have piles of junk mail to sort through each week, but not anymore! Each day when I get the mail, I walk over to the recycling bin outside and immediately toss anything we don’t need so that it never even makes it into the house….definitely a big time saver!!!

  385. My favorite household tip is to leave cleaning products available under all my sinks (kitchen and bathrooms). When I’m brushing my teeth or talking on the phone I can multi-task and use the products to clean the sinks and counters at the same time.

Posted by Shirley Parks | September 2, 2008, 12:17 pm
  386. Give the kids 2 damp washcloths to stand on with the bare feet and tell them to “walk” around the floor. Keeps kids busy while spot cleaning your floor.

  387. Well, my favorite used to be using used dryer sheets to clean the surfaces of my washer and dryer–BUT I have since discovered an even better one for my home: I use baby wipes to clean up just about any kind of kid/baby/adult mess–use them to get baby spit-up out of all sorts of things (carpeting, clothing, hair, etc.), my kids use them instead of washing at the sink (which can be very wasteful and messy) after every meal and bathroom break, use them for on-the-go baby stains, even use them on the food stains my husband frequently manages while we’re eating out–forget the expensive SHOUT wipes!
Thanks for the chance to win!

  388. Use very little laudry soap. I use only about 2 teaspoons of the new concentrated liquids. It cleans just as well as a full amount. This will also make your washing machine last longer as high amounts of detergent wear out the parts faster. This asvice from my grandfather who was an appliance repairman all of his life.

Posted by Lana Dixon | September 2, 2008, 12:44 pm
  389. We attached a dry erase board to the inside of the back door to jot errands down as we think of them. Every time we walk out the door, we’re reminded of what needs to be done! Anything not completed within a week gets moved to our more permanent “TO DO” notebook.

  390. If your fridge or freezer is less than fresh and you are out of baking soda, place a bowl of coffee grounds in there. (Any kind will do; save the Starbucks for drinking!)

Wait a few hours, or overnight and dump the grounds AND all the odors in the garbage.

  391. My favorite household tip: When folding sheets, stuff them into the pillowcases. They are contained and tend to store easier. I also know where ever piece of bedding is. Which is always a bonus on those last minute guests.

    Posted by Hope | September 2, 2008, 1:11 pm
  392. My favorite household tip would be, hmmm… Scrubbing bubbles for the tub! Spray the entire tub (and walls) with scrubbing bubbles at night time, forget about it, go to bed, wake up the next day and either before or during your shower, bring the sponge in with you, and gently wipe. The grub comes off so easily - no elbow pressure required!!!

  393. Keeping a small package of wipes in every room. I don’t have to worry about running through the house to find something to wipe up some sort of sticky mess!

  394. We have a two year old, and the smell of diapers is not pleasent! I put a tiny bowl of vinegar on her bookshelf to soak up the smells in the air. It works wonders!

  397. My favorite household tip involves getting ready for school in the morning. I make sure that EVERY thing we will need for the morning, the kids clothes, lunches, my coffee, etc are laid out, in the spot I would use them, the night before. I even take out the splenda packets and leave them next to my “to go” coffee mug. This way, my house is always clean before I go to bed and clean when I leave in the morning!

  398. The best tip I could give would be to have a cleaning routine, I you constantly are doing some little thing, or picking up something, the house will never become a disaster. Unless of course you have three kids 4 and under, but that’s another story!

    Posted by lisa | September 2, 2008, 2:19 pm
  399. My best cleaning tip is to keep up with it. Don’t let it get out of hand. The whole family pitches in since both parents work. My kids have been doing chores since they were 4.

  400. Teach your kids that cleaning can be fun. At my house we have what I call “Dump Truck Sort” when it comes to sorting and doing the laundry. That is right. My two-year-old and Four-year-old boys do the following once a week.

    1. Bring down their Laundry baskets from their rooms.

    2. I Dump all the clothes in one big pile and put one of each color into separate piles.

    3. My boys put clothing items into their dump trucks and dump the clothing item in the correct color pile.

    4. Once all the clothes are sorted by colors, each boy takes each color pile into their dump truck and dumps the piles into the two-sided laundry basket.

    5. Each boy takes turns putting laundry into the washer and dryer.

  402. A couple of tips:
An old quilter’s trick: If you get blood on fabric, spit on it. The enzymes in your own saliva will break down the blood to prevent staining.

I love a cut lemon or orange down the disposal.

A tip for the car: Keep a ziploc full of change in the car door compartment for toll booths. Even if (especially if) you don’t travel often, you won’t forget your change. Between trips, load it up (or take from it) at the drive-thru.

Ant killer: a little dish soap diluted in a spray bottle. Squirt the ants and they die almost instantly. Just be careful not to slip on the floor.

  403. Once a month I use baking soda and white vinegar
to keep all my drains open and fresh smelling.
I also use newspaper to clean my windows and mirrors.

  406. I almost forgot one of my favorites. My mom always says, “Nothing cleans the house like company coming.” Have friends or family over every week for dinner or game night. If your house doesn’t have a chance to get messy, you won’t have much work to do!

    Posted by Bronwyn | September 2, 2008, 3:42 pm
  407. My favorite tip is to put an open box of arm&hammer baking soda in the bottom of the kitchen trash can and in the bottom of the diaper pail! The newer boxes with the panel sides are even better, but any box will do fine. You just put the trash bag over it so you don’t have to worry about the box of baking soda until its time to change it. TIP: don’t forget to write the date you put it in the can on the side of the box so you know when to change it! Thanks.
