Geek Squad Giveaway: Free In-Home Wireless Setup

Today we are offering a very special giveaway sponsored through the Geek Squad. I am also very excited because we will be adding a new regular feature to help our working moms get more acquainted with their computer equipment and how to use their computers. Nicole, an amazing mom AND a member of the Geek Squad team, is going to be offering advice to us, in simple mommy terms, to help keep us in tune with our PC and how to care for it.

To kick off our relationship with the company, the Geek Squad is offering one lucky reader a gift card for $169 to be put towards the Geek Squad helping put in a wireless network in your home! How cool is that?

Here is a description of the service and how this giveaway will work:

Bye-bye Wires. Home networks are efficient and convenient, but the mess of wires and cables involved can hold you captive to a few locations in your home. A Geek Squad’s Network Installation takes care of setting up a wireless network for you. Once you receive your gift certificate, just call 1-800-GEEK-SQUAD (800 433 5778) to make an appointment. An agent will arrive to your rescue in a signature GeekMobile. You’ll recognize an Agent by their short-sleeved white shirt, black pants, shoes, belt and clip-on tie. After the agent goes to town on your computer….voila, no more wires. For more on Geek Squad, visit their website. The Geek Squad is comprised of highly trained and mobile individuals, or Agents, who are dedicated to making your computer(s) work properly. These people have banded together and sworn to rid the earth of inferior computer behavior.

More about the service:

Network Installation

Share the Internet, printers, and files from anywhere in your home or office with a secure Geek Squad-installed wireless network.

An Agent Will:

Set up or troubleshoot your wired/wireless router* to work with your two-computer network

Set up wireless encryption

Configure file sharing of at least one directory between computers

Configure printer sharing of one functional printer between computers

Rules for Entry: To enter this giveaway, please leave us a comment by March 19th at 8PM. In your comment, please share one thing you would like our new resident Tech Mom to cover about computers- ANYTHING you are struggling with understanding is fair game for discussion on future features. Make sure that your name is clickable OR that you provide a valid email address where you can be contacted if you win! Our winner will be notified by email. Good luck to each of you!

  1. My issue is backing all my pictures and files up. Simply, I forget to. Or, am too lazy. I am afraid that I will end up like Carrie in Sex and the City- and I will get the black (blue?) screen of death. Lose everything. Since switching to digital camera, I have gotten lazy, and just store everything on my computer. What’s an easy way to remember to back up my harddrive? (And, no, the husband won’t do it for me! I’ve asked!)

  2. I am just getting recovered from being hit in December by a bad virus. I would like a way to protect my computer from stuff like that again. I use anti-virus, anti-spyware, anti-malware, you name it and I STILL got hit. Luckily, a friend of mine was able to retrieve some of my data (pictures of the kids mostly), but I lost everything else. I guess I would need to back up my data, along with the first commenter. Thanks so much.

  4. After uninstalling and installing some new anti-spyware/virus software, my pc is soooo slow. Are there any tips on cleaning out software that’s not-essential to your computer? some of the stuff is stuff I’m not sure that I actually need – I mean, I need the HP Image Maker but do I have to keep all the HP stuff to keep that one piece of software? When you buy them, it comes with tons of stuff that I’ve never used and that takes up memory which I end up needing for pictures and whatnot. TIA!

Also, just organizing/deleting/uncluttering the software that came preloaded on the computer. What a great prize. Thanks Amy!

  13. I am really techno-challenged. I have an old computer, but we do have a highspeed connection. My computer still seems slow and I can’t download anything new without my computer going completely nuts. It does this weird thing were the mouse just starts zipping all around the screen. Scary! (Incidently, I run virus scans and take off anything unnecessary CONSTANTLY). I could use some help!

  30. We just purchaed a new computer because our old one crashed and we couldn’t get it to work again. We lost everything that was on it because we didnt have a back up disc. What I would like to know seeing the new computer didn’t come with the software to reload a system how would I make a disc that I could install to reload back to factory settings as to when I purchased it. Is it possible? For example the vista program, can I copy it and save to a disc in case I would need to reload it?
    Thanks,

  44. I’d really like to learn more about securing a wireless network. In our home, we have 2 desktop computers, 2 game consoles, 2 printers and a bunch of peripherals I’d like to set up whereby all are ready to go at any time without having to play cat’s cradle with cables. My real concern is with security as we live on “main street” and I’m concerned about folks deciding to hack my network when they tire of trying to hack Starbucks (which happens to be next door).
Not only that, but there are a bunch of topics that have already been mantioned by my friends above: I’m looking forward to having any of those topics discussed in a non-threatening and, more importantly a non-condescending fashion.
Thanks not only for the giveaway, but even more for the opportunity to make requests of your new columnist.

  47. If I could only ask one question – the one thing I would like Tech Mom to cover about computers is what is the best way to protect my identity/information?

There is so much out there like Firewalls, Pop up Blocker Settings, Virus Scans, Spam Killers, etc. and I don’t know what are the differences and if I need any of them.

  48. I would honestly like to learn more about wireless networks. I find the entire concept baffling. Give me a wire, and I can figure it out, but not wireless. I actually had an electrician come to my house to hard wire all the rooms for internet, which is ridiculous because we all have laptops now. Thanks!
