Giveaway Results: Crystal Light Water Way Challenge Week 3

drinking-water

Congratulations to Rhonda (Commenter #196) on winning this $50 giveaway!

I have always been aware of the great benefits of drinking water. A little known fact about me is that I actually went to college for a food and nutrition degree. Even though I didn’t pursue my career as a dietician, I have been able to put into practice how to cook for my family and provide healthy choices for them.  Drinking more water is a positive choice for all of us… well, maybe not my daughter who is still in those early stages of potty training, but I digress!

There are oodles of benefits to water and I can say that I am seeing a couple of benefits already. For me, my eyes don’t feel quite as dry as they used to. I also feel like I have a little more bounce in my step. More importantly, it is helping me get over the hump of midday snacking because I feel more full.

Here are few more positive benefits of drinking more water:

  • While water is not a miracle cure for anything, dehydration can make you feel drained and can cause all sorts of ailments from muscle aches to headaches. You can combat issues like these by drinking the recommended amount of water for your day.
  • Water might not make you lose weight, but it can help you feel fuller. My junk food loading has slowed down these past two weeks and I have been trying to reach for a glass of water instead of that cookie jar.
  • Drinking more water will help your skin look even better. By drinking my eight glasses of water, my skin doesn’t feel as dry anymore. Anything that can help my skin look better and still keep me on my frugal budget is a dream come true.

Crystal Light would like you to sign up for the Water Way Challenge is easy and will only take a few seconds. You can then use the site as a tool to track your hydration throughout the day. The Mercedes GLK Test: Day 5

img_6638Today was our last day with the GLK and we decided to end it in style. The grandparents took the kids and we hit the town. I had saved my birthday money for a special dinner out and so we hit Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse for a fancy steak dinner. We were so excited to try out the restaurant and were pleasantly surprised that we made it for a dinner special that they ran for early birds. Any extra money that sits in my pocket is a bonus for me.

With no kids in tow, we were able to full blast the music and really enjoy the sound system at the maximum levels.  I have to say that the sound was really incredible, and is one of my favorite things. Of course, no matter what car you’re in, blasting the radio alone is always a wonderful treat.

We enjoyed a fun night out and then ran around like crazy people in the morning. We picked up the kids from the grandparents and dropped of a meal to my nephew who had just had surgery. I now know why I can never reach the machine at the tollbooth because I was able to grab a ticket with no problems on our trip. My vehicle doesn’t hit at the right height, I guess.

With all the running around, we had to stop for food and the kids were excited when we pulled into McDonald’s and they got to eat their Happy Meals in the fancy new digs. My kids are messy eaters and definitely gave the GLK an apple juice and French fry christening. Thank goodness the seats are leather and with a few swipes with a baby wipe, we were back in business. Despite all our errands, we used less than a half tank of gas.

Before this adventure, I would never have dreamed of buying a Mercedes, but next time we purchase a car, I’ll be doing a little more research. There were many great features on the GLK and the safety factor is certainly important — especially in such horrible weather.

We would like to thank Mercedes & RGM for giving us the opportunity to try out this vehicle. It made for a really fun week for the whole family!

The Mercedes GLK Test: Day 4

img_6636Another day, another scene from The Day After Tomorrow. Lots of snow. Shards of ice. Coldest day in a decade. The wind chill is a balmy negative 32 degrees.

The roads were bad enough yesterday, today they’re terrifying. All we see are wheels spinning, cars sliding and ambulances. Our neighbor made it to the entrance of our subdivision this time only to become stranded again. Another neighbor was digging her out with a shovel. Sounds like the perfect day to drive around in a Mercedes we don’t own!

Despite the absolute chaos on the roads today, the GLK did not falter once. This brings us to an important point about any vehicle you may be considering: safety. I had some reservations about test-driving a Mercedes given the financial crisis. It seemed a bit wrong to be talking about a luxury brand as I practice and preach the live-within-your-means lifestyle. But the thing I’ve been convinced of in the last few days is the value of investing in a quality vehicle that will keep my family safe during days like this.

Sure, on ordinary days our decade-old cars with 100k+ miles would get us where we needed to go just as well as the GLK. But as I watch the car next to me slide into an intersection trying to stop, I am surprised to find I’m not wetting myself in fright. Our cars have airbags, but this one has 6, including protection for the kids. When I put on my turn signal at night, it shines a light around the corner so I can see what or whom I’m going to run over. In the rain or snow, it will dry its brakes off automatically so you can still stop when you need to. Then there’s the all-wheel-drive and traction control which we’ve tested the limits of on our local ice rink today.

You may not need all of this if you live in paradise, but for those of us who settled in the frozen tundra, they’re features that are worth their weight in gold.

The Mercedes GLK Test: Day 3

The nice weatherman informed us that we’d be experiencing an all-out blizzard today. Not a snowstorm, a blizzard. We were well on our way to becoming buried when we woke up this morning as evidenced by this quick little video we took. Notice our front door had frozen shut:

Of course, we had important places we needed to get to today. My husband had an out-of-town meeting to attend, so he got dibs on the GLK. As he was digging the GLK out, we watched as our neighbor made it as far as the end of her driveway before getting stranded. There’s no way that my husband’s car would have made it that far. The Mercedes, however, drove through the still-unplowed subdivision like it was summer. He reported back that on his way to the meeting he passed 3 cars that had become stuck or slid off the road. He also witnessed a near head-on collision as the car in front of him decided to travel sideways for a while, in the opposite lane.

He arrived to his meeting early, but the handful of plowed parking spots had been taken. Maybe it was being dizzy with confidence from his new ride, but he decided the GLK could make its own parking spot. While he had trouble opening the door in waist-deep snow, he somehow got that vehicle out when it came time to leave. Boys!

While my wonderful Subaru has all-wheel drive as well, I think he had the advantage when it comes to blizzards. The GLK is a little higher up, but it’s not like you’re driving a school bus. It’s small enough to feel like you’re in a car, but can still hold as much as my wagon does. I’m starting to warm up to this thing, but maybe that’s just the heated seats.

The Mercedes GLK Test: Day 2

img_6640Today we woke up to huge amounts of snow, covering everything and making a general nightmare. As I rushed around to get our son ready for the bus, my husband was actually happy about the prospect of barreling through snow banks in the new GLK. He meticulously scraped the windows clean and shoveled it from beneath the mountain of snow. We all watched as he zipped stylishly down the driveway.

Tonight we decided to investigate more of the features. The obvious place to start was the DVD entertainment center. This was quite a treat because the closest thing we had for my car was a VCR system we bought on the cheap which came in a 40-pound bag the size of a tent. I’m sure you’ll be shocked to hear Mercedes has developed something a little more practical. Two huge LCD monitors sit behind the front seats for the kids and a DVD player is right within reach. We discovered another favorite feature, the surround sound system.

That’s right, a complete high-end surround sound system, just like the one in your husband’s man-cave. Now, for us that seems a bit over-the-top when it comes to entertaining your kids (we prefer the “who can go the longest without making any sound” game), but as music fanatics we were impressed. The first thing we’ve done to every car is upgrade the sound system. We tear out the speakers and have CD players installed because factory stereos always sound worse than a Speak-And-Spell. The one in our GLK is incredible.

By accident we pressed the roadside assistance button. And before long, a super nice man arrived to help us. But since we were sitting in our driveway we didn’t really need any assistance. He was very understanding and it was nice to know that he’s out there if you need him.

The Mercedes GLK Test: Day 1

img_66371This summer, Mercedes contacted us about a new SUV they were coming out with that’s going to be aimed at families looking for all the features and safety of a Mercedes but for a lower cost. As most of you know, I’m not one for fancy vehicles. In fact, I’m pretty content with the decade-old, but paid for, cars we drive now. But hey, it couldn’t hurt to hear more about the offer.

I found out that Mercedes has aggressively priced the new GLK to be competitive with many popular family vehicles out there. Starting at $33,900, it’s nearly $15,000 less than their next step up. That’s still a lot of money, but not as much as I thought when I looked at the cost of these comparable vehicles.

  • Toyota Sienna Limited – $35,665
  • Honda Odyssey Touring – $40,505
  • Chrysler Aspen $35,58
  • Chevy Tahoe $37,415
  • Subaru Tribeca Limited – $32,595

I decided to put the new GLK to the Clark test.

Today was delivery day. While I was out grocery shopping with the kids, who were so bad that a stranger offered to help me get them out of the store, the GLK arrived. Typical to my day, I didn’t get the chance to do anything but rush the kids around it on our way inside. I had to get my son ready for the bus that was on its way down the road, haul the groceries in and make lunch for our daughter who had somehow found “11″ on her scream volume.

When my husband got home from work I told him that I forgotten an ingredient for dinner and that we were out of diapers. A wide grin came over his face as he grabbed the keys to the GLK and said, “it’s ok, I’ll go get them.” Our son tagged along and upon their return I asked what he thought of the new car. He shouted “It’s awwwwesooome!” and rattled off every cool feature he could remember. Clearly my husband had enjoyed the diaper run more than he usually does.
