Giveaway Results: Crystal Light Water Way Challenge Final Week

I take for granted the abundance of clean water that I am able to drink each and every day. When I think of all of those out there that have no access to clean water, it makes me ashamed that I admitted to you that I rarely drink it.

A quick look at the statistics on Water Partners International, I am able to see the sobering truth about what a beautiful thing it is to have clean water for my family.

  • 3.575 million people die each year from water-related disease
  • 43% of water-related deaths are due to diarrhea.
  • 84% of water-related deaths are in children ages 0- 14.
  • 98% of water-related deaths occur in the developing world.
  • 884 million people, lack access to safe water supplies, approximately one in eight people.
  • The water and sanitation crisis claims more lives through disease than any war claims through guns
  • At any given time, half of the world’s hospital beds are occupied by patients suffering from a water-related disease.
  • Less than 1% of the world’s fresh water (or about 0.007% of all water on earth) is readily accessible for direct human use.
  • An American taking a five-minute shower uses more water than the typical person living in a developing country slum uses in a whole day.

Yes, the facts are grim and it saddens me deeply to know that so few people have the great privilege of drinking crystal clear water that comes straight from their sink each day. I don’t have to haul water in pails for my family, I can wash my clothes in clean water, and I don’t have to worry about my family’s health when we drink our water. How blessed am I?

Despite these sad facts there are small ways that you can make a big difference for others. Crystal Light would like you to sign up for the Water Way Challenge so that they can offer assistance to those who do not have access to clean water. Through this campaign, Crystal Light has a goal of assisting 900 million people through this campaign initiative.

I have always been aware of the great benefits of drinking water. A little known fact about me is that I actually went to college for a food and nutrition degree. Even though I didn’t pursue my career as a dietician, I have been able to put into practice how to cook for my family and provide healthy choices for them.  Drinking more water is a positive choice for all of us… well, maybe not my daughter who is still in those early stages of potty training, but I digress!

There are oodles of benefits to water and I can say that I am seeing a couple of benefits already. For me, my eyes don’t feel quite as dry as they used to. I also feel like I have a little more bounce in my step. More importantly, it is helping me get over the hump of midday snacking because I feel more full.

Here are few more positive benefits of drinking more water:

  • While water is not a miracle cure for anything, dehydration can make you feel drained and can cause all sorts of ailments from muscle aches to headaches. You can combat issues like these by drinking the recommended amount of water for your day.
  • Water might not make you lose weight, but it can help you feel fuller. My junk food loading has slowed down these past two weeks and I have been trying to reach for a glass of water instead of that cookie jar.
  • Drinking more water will help your skin look even better. By drinking my eight glasses of water, my skin doesn’t feel as dry anymore. Anything that can help my skin look better and still keep me on my frugal budget is a dream come true.

There are many creative ways to stay hydrated and for those of us that struggle with drinking water, I thought I would share a few new ways to add hydration into your day.

  • Buy a reusable water bottle that you can take with you when you are on the go. I love the stainless steel varieties because it keeps your water nice and cold. If you are unsure how much liquid the water bottle will hold, pour the water into a measuring glass and then figure out how many of those bottles are needed to meet your water quota.
  • Adding lemon or a splash of bottled lemon juice to my water makes drinking water more appealing to me. That hint of flavor seems to make all of the difference.
  • Exercising forces me to drink more water. By exercising, I am not only getting my body in shape, but it also makes me thirsty for more water. I call that a total win-win situation!
  • Encourage the rest of the family to drink more water by serving a glass of water with your meals instead of any other drinks. After everyone gets one glass in, then offer milk or juice for the second glass.
  • Make a deal with yourself that for every cup of tea, coffee, or soda that you drink that you will match this with one cup of water. This has helped me scale back the amount of coffee I am drinking and increased the amount of water going into my system.
  • Crystal Light does offer lots of fun flavors that you can add to your water and it is low in calories. I am a fan of the Raspberry Lemonade & Fruit Punch flavors for adding a little punch to my water.

I am almost ashamed to admit this, but I am horrible about drinking water. I always have the best intentions, but rarely do I pull off more than a glass of water a day. My hydration comes from coffee in the morning, a glass of milk in the afternoon, and a soda later in the day. I know that I am probably dehydrated and I also know that I am not alone. In fact, it is estimated that 75% of Americans are suffering from dehydration.

Crystal Light wants to encourage people to begin drinking water again and they have put together a Water Way Challenge that will not only benefit you, but also benefit others.  By participating in the challenge, you can help others who do not have access to clean drinking water. The sad fact is, over 900 million people around the world do not have access to clean water. By participating in this challenge, Crystal Light will be able to assist these parts of the world and also encourage you to begin making hydration a priority.
