Review: Bissell Steam & Sweep Hard Floor Cleaner

I have confessed before and I will confess again that I am a vacuum junkie. After our recent review of the Shark Vac then Steam, Bissell reached out to me to see if I might be interested in giving the Bissell Steam & Sweep Hard Floor Cleaner a spin.  My original steam cleaner happened to be the original Bissell Steam Mop and  I really loved it so I was excited to see what new features were now made available through this newer model.

As the name implies the Bissell Steam & Sweep offer both the steaming feature and the sweeping feature. What makes this model stand above the rest is that the steam and sweep features that are offered are done simultaneously rather than doing these two activities separately. What could be better than being able to get your floors cleaned & steamed at the same time with one tool?

As always, we offer our pros & cons list with this steam mop!

Pros:

  • The steam mop pads are easier to the put on then my old Bissell Steam Mop. This model offers Velcro pads that are easy to attach and detach from the steam mop. The model comes with two mop pads and washed up beautifully after using them on my floors.
  • The cord on this model is generous and I can do almost my entire kitchen and hallway using the cord without having to unplug and relocate.
  • The vacuum function on this model does a surprisingly powerful job. The rotating brush brings in hidden debris and was particularly great in hidden corners of my home and the edges of the room where debris is gathered.
  • The tank on this model is generous and enough to easily do two rooms without refilling. There are no extra parts to keep track of for refilling (like funnels and separate pouring containers) which mean you have fewer pieces to keep track of.
  • The biggest pro with this model is the fact that the vacuum and steaming can be done simultaneously. With a flip of the switch you are steaming and sweeping your floors at the same time.  For busy moms, this one feature alone makes it an ideal model for those of us that want clean floors, but don’t have time to drag out two separate vacuums to get the job done.  It does a very impressive job at both functions!

Cons:

  • As with past models of Bissell steam mops, this Steam & Sweep has a trigger to release the steam. While it offers more control over how much you steam in certain spots, if you are steaming for awhile it can be tiring on your trigger finger having to hold it down to release the steam.
  • The steam mop pads are very thin so the steam does come through at full blast which can get your floors very wet as you get towards the end of your steaming. Because of the thinness of the pads, it also makes it more cumbersome to push when the pads are wet. A thicker pad would definitely remedy this small issue.

Other than these two small gripes, I was really impressed at what an effective job this model does at getting your floors swept and steamed simultaneously. This would make a fantastic holiday gift for any mom that is burdened with the care of tile & hardwood floors.

Thank you all for entering our Earth Day contest.  We chose our winner randomly and would like to congratulate Commenter #9 (Mana) on winning this prize pack.

Mana said, “Every year in March, we put up green decorations around the house, put green food coloring in our meals and one year i even wore a goofy leprechaun hat :) Our Sunday afternoon tradition is to drive down to the local airfield where they have a large recycling station. We recycle all our recyclables, and then drive around so our kids can look at all the planes. Ideally I would like to build our own solar array to complement our household electricity usage.”

Thanks for entering and please check back each Tuesday for a brand new giveaway!

In conjunction with my role in the Walmart Eleven Moms, I was able to sample just a handful of the great products Walmart is carrying to green up our household routines. I am truly trying to do my part to be green and teach my children to love & protect our Earth so it is wonderful to get to sample of the great green products on the market today.

In addition to sampling them, in honor of Earth Day, we were offered the opportunity to giveaway the items we received  and to share the green love with our wonderful readers.

Here is just a little information about the products that are included in this fabulous prize pack that one lucky reader will win!

Brita Water Pitcher- The last time I bought one of these was in college and maybe that is why I am so impressed with some of the great design changes that have happened since my last purchase. This handy filtration system comes with a flip top so that it is easy to fill with tap water and a a little covered pour spout that keeps your water nice and fresh. Replacing your water bottles with these filtration systems are a great green alternative and are a lot friendlier on your wallet to boot.

greenworks1Clorox GreenWorks Cleaning Products- Longtime readers will know that I am a HUGE fan of the new line from GreenWorks and have yet to have met a product from this line that I do not like. These cleaners are more affordable than many of the green cleaners on the market and they offer the same great green benefits. In our house, we love the GreenWorks wipes and dish soap. I am sure you will find that these perform just as good as the harsh stuff, and they are easy on your wallet too! I encourage you to give these product a try!

Tide Coldwater- With two crazy kids, we have a lot of dirty clothes in our house and laundry detergent gets put to the test. I am a huge fan of Tide and feel it is worth that little extra bit of money to keep my clothes looking nice to splurge on a good detergent. The new Tide Coldwater can keep your clothes looking great without even turning on the hot water. This is better for the environment and will keep your clothes lasting longer.

White Cloud “Green Earth” Paper Towels- I won’t lie, one thing we do not purchase a lot of is paper products. I have learned I can whittle this expense down to just toilet paper by disposing of the disposable items. That being said, there are those occasions where a roll of paper towels comes in handy. I won’t illustrate those occasions, as I am sure you can imagine a few on your own. White Cloud makes a line of “Green Earth” paper towels made from 100% recycled fibers. If you are a family that has a paper towel addiction, this line would be a great option to explore or to keep on hand for life’s little emergencies.

bissell-grean-machineBissell Little Green Deep Cleaner- Of all of the products in the line-up, my enthusiasm for this one can’t be surpassed. My obsession with Bissell knows no bounds and their Little Green Floor Cleaner is great for any mom with messy kids or animals. You can not only spot clean your floors, but you can also tidy up the upholstery with ease. Anybody have a minivan stuck with years of  McDonald Happy Meals? This might be the ticket for getting order restored in the car or your children’s carseats. It takes up very little room and is a great gadget to keep those carpets looking beautiful in your house. What makes it earth-friendly? The parts are made from post-consumer recycled plastic and it has PVC-free tanks and hose. They also greatly reduced the packaging to help keep this green machine as green as possible!

For one of my lucky and amazing readers, I am offering this ENTIRE prize pack from Walmart, Bissell, White Cloud, Tide, Clorox Greenworks, and Brita (valued at approximately $130) to you, in honor of Earth Day! To enter, please leave a comment by Tuesday (04/28) at 8PM EST and tell me one habit you will change to green one of your household routines. The more creative, the better! Good luck to each of you and Happy Earth Day!

Bissell Versus Cordless Bare Floor Vacuum

bissellI am a huge fan of Bissell products and everything that I have ever bought from the company has been a roaring success in our house. We have the Bissell Quick Steamer and the Bissell Steam Mop. Both of these little vacuums get a workout in our house, but I have yet to find a cordless vacuum that I am happy with. We bought a Shark which I absolutely loved until it burned out two years later. The next investment was our Dirt Devil Vibe. The suction was great for about a month and then it just stopped picking up. Since then I have been making do with a good old-fashioned broom and pan, but I always keep my eyes peeled for a cordless vacuum that works.

Bissell sent over their new Bissell Versus Cordless Bare Floor Vacuum and I couldn’t wait to open it up. As with all cordless vacuums it requires a good charging before it will work so I had to wait until the next day to use it. Upon it charging, I was ready to roll and I had two willing and messy children to help me break it in. After a morning breakfast of cornflakes (for Ethan) and Cheerios (for Emily), we had the perfect scenario for testing out this vacuum.

The first thing you will notice about this vacuum is that it is an unusual shape. The design might not make sense at first, but when you are trying to get in those crevices around your furniture, it makes complete sense. It is a V-shape design that allows you to get right against your kitchen table and chairs without having to manuever around it. It does require a little manuevering though when you are trying to get around the outer perimeters of your room, but you just line it up against the wall and push around that way.

This vacuum has great suction and within minutes, I could see that it had picked up every last little cornflake bit and Cheerio.  Again, the design factor comes into play on this model because the V-shaped design helps so that you aren’t scooting stuff around (as I had experienced with other cordless models) and actually suctions it into the center.

While intended for bare floors, you could also use this vacuum on low pile carpeting. The vacuum is brushless so you aren’t having to deal with trapped hairs and threads underneath. Best of all, it is bagless and has any easy to release cup where you can dump out what you catch…like Cheerios or cornflakes!

I would highly recommend this vacuum and can’t wait to put it to the Clark test and see if it can survive a few years of hard work in our house.

Here are a few easy tips for picking a cordless vacuum that will be a good fit for your family:

1. You will be much happier with whatever you are purchasing if you can test drive it. Borrow one from a friend or just take them through a spin in the aisle. It would be ideal if you could use it, but if you can’t just try pushing it around to see if it glides easily.

2. Pick a store that has a good return policy. Many times, picking a good quality cordless vacuum is a game of trial in error. In the case of the Shark, I read a story of one lady who had went through three in a month so it is good that the return policy would allow her to do that.

3. Online stores are great and might have more affordable pricing on these, but the pure and simple fact is, if it is defective or you just plain hate it, you have to ship that back. Who wants to be running a sweeper over to the post office? Physical stores are better in this case.

4. Sometimes extras (which cost extra) aren’t worth it. Stick to the basic functions and look for ones that offer the best sweeper for your money.

5. Just like all things, the highest price does not make it the best. Some of the higher priced models had a lot less power than this one so make sure you read the box carefully before buying.

A big thanks to the Bissell company for letting us take their product for a test drive!
