Review: New Carnival Games

One thing I remember as I kid is going to the 4H fair with my parents and being tempted by those enormous stuffed animals by the carnival games. You always saw them hanging, but you never saw anyone win one. That should have been my first clue that there was something fishy about the games.

Flash forward to when we got the first Carnival Games for Wii. The controls were difficult and some of the games nearly impossible. An accurate interpretation of those childhood memories, but for some reason, we just kept on playing. This sort of masochistic behavior is best left for therapy sessions.

So when the sequel, New Carnival Games: Return to the Midway arrived, we thought we were in for more tears and controller throwing. Fortunately for all involved, there have been improvements. Yes, some of the games are quite difficult, but these are balanced by others that are enjoyable to all ages

The overall concept to the game is the same as the first. You create a custom character, play games to earn tickets and virtual prizes, and then redeem tickets for crazy clothes for your character to wear. That’s all there is to it, but for a game aimed at younger kids the silly hats are enough motivation to keep on trying for those tickets.

You’ll play games of the same style you would expect to see at a fair: skeeball, make baskets in a moving hoop, bag tossing, and shooting targets. These are similar to what the first game offered, but the controls seemed a little easier and less frustrating this time around. What really sets this second game apart are the more unusual activities. The family favorite is the haunted house, when gives you a first-person perspective as you aim for and shoot targets on ghosts that pop up. The other would be the tractor pull which, being from Indiana, is something I’ve witnessed in person. This version has all the fun and none of the ear-bleeding.

Overall, the game is aimed at younger kids starting around first grade. Though older kids would enjoy most of the games the first few times, I don’t think it would hold their interest over the long term. If your kids enjoyed the first version of this game, the new one is certainly worth a try.

Review: Shark 2-in-1 Vac-then-Steam

I am a huge fan of steam cleaning products because of their eco-friendliness and the streak-free shine you can get by not using a lot of products on your home.  I have had a Bissell Steam Mop for a long time and really loved it for my hardwood floors. My only caveat with having the steam mop though was that I had to get out the vacuum and then get out the steam mop when I was done. I wished that there was a product that I could use that would combine the two for storage space and to make the process easier.

Shark 2-in-1 Vac-then-Steam is just that. It is a quick vacuum and it also contains the steam mop in one product. I was intrigued how effective this would work, but it is actually very smartly designed. The base of the vacuum has magnetic pieces that line up to the steam mop attachment and it grabs the mop attachment when it is time to switch from vacuum to steam mop without a lot of effort.

With a house full of laminate flooring and tile, I wanted to share with you the pros and cons of this product!

Pros:

  • The steam mop pad stretches the entire base of the vacuum and is attached with Velcro to the head of the vacuum. There is no need to stretch or try to fit the steam mop pads over anything which has been my biggest gripe with my Bissell Steam Mop. It comes with two pads and the pads are reusable and can be thrown in your washer and dryer to clean.
  • The cord on this model is generous and I can do almost my entire kitchen and hallway using the cord without having to unplug and relocate.
  • The functionality on the vacuum is smartly designed for ease of switching from the vacuum to the steam mop. Two separate switches are designed on the panel so you know which one to switch to for cleaning your floors.   You operate the vacuum without the base attachment for the steam function and then when it is time to steam, it magnetically grabs to the bottom and you are ready to go.
  • The steam mop functions beautifully and with ease. It takes roughly thirty seconds for the steam to heat up and then you lean the arm of the vacuum down and push across your floors to steam them. You don’t even have to hold down a trigger to start the steam function; it automatically goes when you have switched to the steam mop.  The steam is not a heavy steam and the steaming is pretty consistent throughout without bubbling or any wet spots on the floors. With heavier spots, it might require another once over, but for the most part the steaming works very effectively!

Cons:

  • The steam mop comes with a separate container and funnel that you use to pour the water into the reservoir in the back. I really did like the separate tank  that my Bissell had because I didn’t have to keep track of extra parts. The reservoir is not very big too, but did do a surprisingly good job with a very little amount of water used. It only took about half the tank to get my entire kitchen and hallway clean.
  • The vacuum is not great- it is definitely a quick vac. This will work beautifully in areas with lesser debris like your bathrooms and maybe a quick vacuuming after the kids are done with lunch, but it seems to struggle picking up larger debris.  I wish it was cordless too because a vacuum like this feels like a charging base would be more ideal for the quick vacuuming under my kitchen tables and requires a bit more effort when a cord is involved.

Other than those two cons though, I am really impressed, particularly with the design of this product. It would make a wonderful addition to your cleaning tools and if you haven’t tried steaming your floors before, I swear that you will never go back to those expensive one-use products!

Review: Oneida Chef’s Table Dinnerware

I can openly admit that I have an obsession with dishes. I think it began shortly after seeing a picture of Martha Stewart’s kitchen, open shelving filled to the brim with hundreds of beautiful white dishes. It was then that I decided that every good home should have oodles of white dishes and I began my white dish collecting shortly thereafter. Of course, my shelves were filled with an inexpensive set of Gibson dishes that were on the clearance shelves at Target.

To my delight, I got the opportunity to try out the new offerings from Oneida and sample a set of their dinnerware in a service for four. Of all the beautiful color selections, I went to my favorite standby and selected another set of beautiful white dishes. What can I say except that I love the practicality and simplicity of a good white set!

The Chef’s Table set caught my eye because it looked like restaurant-quality china with its square edges and sharp lines.  The contemporary sleekness is not something that I had expected from the company and I was excited to display these dishes along with my other sets.

After using these for a couple of weeks now, I can honestly say that I am impressed with the quality of the dishes and our family has been using these daily since they came into our possession. My poor Gibson sets have moved down in the white dish rotation and I am in love with the simple design of these dishes.

Here are my thoughts on this set:

Pros:

  • The dishes are very heavy and have a porcelain coating that makes them easy to clean and rinse. They are dishwasher safe, but seem to come clean very easily with just a quick rinse under the sink, even with stuck on foods like eggs and oatmeal. I love a dish that comes clean without any scrubbing!
  • The dishes are microwavable safe, but as I have discovered from buying inexpensive dishes in the past, these dishes actually almost stay cool to the touch when heated in the microwave.  This is a big plus with me since we reheat a lot of leftovers in our house.
  • The design of the dishes is very sleek and contemporary.  Despite its sharp edges, it seems to hold up well despite the dinging and fork banging that can happen in our house with two children.
  • This set would complement any other dishes that you might like to mix it with, making it a versatile choice for any family.
  • The mugs that it comes with are actual mugs, not dinky little tea cups that no one really would ever drink out of. I love that all of the pieces can be used, instead of trying to figure out what to do with dainty or impractical pieces. The other pieces within the set are equally as practical and would get a lot of use in your home.

Cons:

  • The only con I have found with these is that the mugs are made too thinly and get very hot when you pour coffee into them. It takes awhile for them to cool down on the outside so you definitely can’t cup your hands around the mug until your coffee cools. Bummer to that, but not enough of a bummer to dissuade me from buying another set to match!
