Have any of you taught your babies sign language?  If so, was your experience positive?  Are there specific web sites or books you would recommend?  I am working with my daughter on a few signs, and sometimes she makes the signs for "eat" and "more".  I think it would be helpful if I had some good resources...I love the idea of teaching her to sign words before she can say them, so she can tell me what she wants.  She has just gotten to the stage where she points to everything and is starting to get impatient when I don't understand what she wants!!   Smiley

Thanks, and have a great day!

our youngest, now 3-1/2, was speech delayed.  We taught him some very basic signs, and his speech therapist did the same.  We didn't really use any particular book or method... just ASL signs for common words and phrases.  Please, thank you, no, yes, more, cup, etc....  It eased his (and our) frustration during the time that he could not speak, and empowered him in knowing that he had a way to communicate with us.  Thankfully, we had a great therapist, and by his third birthday, he had age-appropriate expressive speech skills!  And he hasn't stopped talking since  Cheesy

Hi!  Our twins also have speech delays.  They will be two next month.  We work with Early Childhood Intervention.  We are teaching them along witht the speech therapist.  No particular book or anything.  We are just doing the basics as well.  Help, thank you, more, please, love you, cup, drink, food, plate, no, yes, stop....

It helps so much in understanding the wants and needs of our children.  It is difficult with one, but having two the same age, going through the same things at the same exact time is really hard!!!  Having this tool is so useful and helps so much.  I strongly encourage using signing as often as possibe to help interact and understand your children.  Great job ditarae and st1pht!

Blessings!!!!

It was a great tool for us too.  We didn't use any books either, just the therapist.  I think it's awesome thing to teach any baby, not just speech delayed.

Thanks for your feedback!  I think I will pick up a book at least that shows me the signs at the library to help me get started, since we aren't working with anyone and I only know about 5 signs.  Smiley I am so excited, my daughter just started signing "more"!  She sometimes will make the sign for "eat" but only when she is eating, (with cheerio in hand) not to tell me she wants to eat.  Anyway, we are getting there and I am enjoying watching her learn!

Thanks again!
