I have been a licensed esthetician for many years and am now just working one day a week because i'm caring for my elderly mom as well as 2 teenagers. I find that making my own products is much better for my skin as well as much more affordable.  My favorite recipe is for body scrub and is very simple. Regular table sugar can be added to moisturizing body washes as well as to creamy face cleansers or even mixed with olive oil. I keep a container of sugar in the shower and mix as needed. I'm always interested in finding new homemade skin treatments.

Fabulous tips! I actually used to do a sugar scrub on my feet with a little olive oil and sugar. The sugar is abrasive enough to remove the dead skin without being too abrasive.

I have also made my own bath salts. I just use epsom salts and add a little bit of glycerin (purchased at the drugstore behind our pharmacy counter) and an essential oil scent. These work wonderfully!

Another thing I did was a foot soak with dry powdered milk and that worked wonderfully. I have a friend who actually soaks in the tub in a milk bath.

Those are great too! Cheesy I also like to use plain yogurt in facial masks. I like to mix my own with fresh ingredients but it also works well for stretching a store bought mask. The yogurt is soothing on sensitive skin and it also keeps clay masks from drying too quickly on the skin so that you get a better action from them being on longer.

Thank you SOOO much for that idea. I have extremely sensitive skin and I would love to use a facial mask, but it dries my skin out really quickly and is uncomfortable with my dry skin. I am going to try this with the yogurt! Great ideas!!

I like to use a mask of honey and regular oatmeal. It makes your skin very smooth.

The scrubs and masks sound great!  I like it that you can adjust the ingredients.. sometimes the store bought isn't quite right.

I mix my own body lotion.  It's not out of the kitchen cupboard, but it works great for my dry skin and it's inexpensive.  I go to dollar general and buy their big 32 oz bottle of cocoa butter lotion, a jar of Personal Care Vitamin E lotion and 1/2 (3.5 oz) of a big jar of petroleum jelly.  I whip it together until its not lumpy.  I used to have very dry skin, but I just put this on after I get out of the shower and havent had to buy anything else.  I also mix a portion of it with a little extra vaseline and my husband uses it on his hands when they are dry and cracked from working outside.

i have a friend who has psoriasis, and as such is really sensitive to a lot of the chemical ingredients (SLS, fragrances) present in most drugstore brands.  instead of lotion, she uses safflower oil (like grapeseed oil, it doesn't clog pores and it a LOT less expensive) scented with a couple of drops of an essential oil and rubs in a few drops over her skin before stepping out of the shower.  (you can find safflower oil at some specialty grocery stores or your local health food store)  she only needs it every other day and swears by it.  it's also cheaper than a big bottle of body lotion, and i'm going to switch to it as soon as i use my lotion up.  all natural and better for your skin, too!
