The MomAdvice Big Give: Faith Mission of Elkhart, Indiana
POSTED BY Amy at 8:00 PM
Recently Ron Hudson, from
Immediate Influence, created a list with the
top 50 most influential women in social media, and to my surprise, I found myself listed as #8 on that list. I don’t mention this to brag, but I mention this because the list claimed that we were not only influential, but that we were also very powerful women.
With power comes great responsibility though and I don’t feel like I have been using my internet powers for all the good that I can. I have quietly been taking care of myself and my family and reaping the rewards that come along with it- free trips, free products, and great connections.
My muscle is weak, but I want to flex it a little bit right now because I owe it to myself and I owe it to my community. You see, my hometown is filled with factories with laid off workers. My town is filled with families who can’t pay their bills. My town is filled with hungry children. Don’t believe it? My hometown was featured in the
New York Times recently and they stated this, “
Elkhart, near the Michigan border in an area known as Michiana, is the white-hot center of the meltdown of the American economy. Its main industries, the manufacturing of recreational vehicles and motor homes, have fallen apart over the last year because of high gasoline prices. That has taken down ancillary businesses like R.V. parts suppliers and storage warehouses.
The jobless rate in Elkhart has increased more than in any metropolitan area in the country; it rose over 4.8 percentage points from August 2007 to August 2008. According to labor statistics released this summer, nearly 10,000 people were out of work, a rate of 9.3 percent.”
My family is made up of blue collar workers who work hard for a living and they all live in uncertainty if their jobs will last. My family members have been laid off, they have been worried about health care, and they are swallowed by medical bills. Likewise, surviving a year of my husband being laid off was one of the hardest times in our marriage, the hardest time in our finances, and the hardest time as a parent.
We have made it through, but many families can’t.
I want to do something big for our local shelter. I want to give what I can to help the families who are not able to have a bright Christmas. I want them to have something to look forward to.
It is hard to put it out here in black and white because now I have to do it. I am gathering the names of all the PR people who have contacted me to do product reviews and giveaways to help me make something happen in my town. Even if we do not receive help from anyone, we have reserved money in our savings to do something on our own. We are hoping though to make a bigger difference than that though and have high hopes that our prayers and dreams will come true.
If you are in PR, if you are a business that can donate, I ask that you email me (amy@momadvice.com) and tell me what you can do for our local shelter. I will include and publicize any business that contributes to my give through our website and blog, along with a special shout-out on The MotherLoot for the entire month of January. It will be the first entry that anyone sees for that whole month and it will say, “Thank You to these Powerful Companies.” In addition, if you are a blogger who can share about our efforts on your blog or if you can contribute in your hometown and dedicate an entry to us, we will thank you in a blog entry for making your own charitable efforts. Our local shelter,
Faith Mission, has an
urgent need for the following items:
• Towels • Pillows • Deodorant • Disposable Razors • Shaving Cream • Kleenex • Cough Drops • Aspirin
| • Non-Alcoholic Cough Syrup • Alka-Seltzer • Pepto Bismol • Tums • Body Lotion • Cologne • Conditioner • Hats & Gloves all sizes
|
Want to give financially? You can donate to our cause via the following link. We've set no minimum amount. Your heart will determine that:
I will be video documenting our journey and sharing our triumphs and struggles as we work on our big give and I really encourage you to follow us as we learn more about our shelter and the need that lies within our own community. You can follow our videos as we add them here:

"Is this the kind of thing you mean?
All year long I take advantage of those great Walgreens deals and tons of coupons. I save tons and tons of products to give to our school's holiday basket drive. 66% of the kids in my school are at or below the poverty level. I donate shampoo, soap, razors, aluminum foil, etc., etc. I'm just a one woman show so I'm not quite sure if this is what you mean, but I'll link to you and describe my efforts if it is what you are talking about."
Amy
"Absolutely- just post a link about what we are trying to do and an example of your own charitable efforts. Put your name on the linky list and I will give you some free advertising for doing something great for your community!
I am a one woman show myself so I have all the respect in the world for anything anyone can do for others for the holiday season!"
Frugal Dad
"What an awesome idea, Amy! I've been wanting to do more myself, but have had little time to organize my ideas because of the illness in my family. I think I'll follow your lead and try to put something together on behalf of Frugal Dad--maybe I'll even toss in one of those bags I'm giving away full of the items you require. I'll email you more details when I can settle in to write."

"Amy- I'll plug this in my next newsletter to area realtors. For my December postcard I print for customers, I will offer a 50% donation to Faith Mission with every postcard order. Not much (.06 per postcard) but something."

"Amy, I LOVE LOVE LOVE the way you are taking a powerful stand with your generous spirit. I am ALL IN. I would love to support you and your efforts. I will go shopping and get one of everything on the Faith Mission list. :) YOU ROCK."

"Amy,
I have a bag of mittens to send. I have loads of other things that I can send as well. I am only to happy to put it to good use.
I'll need a place to mail it as soon as I get it boxed up. I have some great readers on my blog. I'll do a post and hopefully their hearts will be opened to help.
I encourage you to set up a PayPal account for donations so things can be purchased on your end. Postage is high so some may want to just donate!
All the best!

We have several things planned for this season. I have a blog post scheduled for next week that I will be sure to link up. In the meantime, I will post a link to your site and a teaser to my post.

"Would love to give to the shelter! I just sent 2 packages to missionary friends we used to work with in the Dominican Republic. I see their address on their page. We were just in Goshen visiting friends, so I feel like I know your parts! Thanks for flexing your muscles!

"I am just so touched-I have really no words right now. The response already is just so amazing. I am just speechless.
We did set up a PayPal donation button. Thank you so much, Ginger, for suggesting that! We are venturing into uncharted territories for our blog so we appreciate those kinds of ideas!"

"I'm going to assume the conditioner needed is for hair. If so , I've got some from when I worked at a hair salon.I also have shampoo if they need that as well. I don't know how much I can pay for shipping as I'm jobless as well, but I will do my best to send what I can afford.

"Amy,
I am over in Mishawaka and have a a couple of Sams Club gift cards I can use to get some of the items listed. Should I just donate the cards to them or get the items and bring them over to Faith Mission?
Bless you for blessing others.

"Your post is beautiful and intelligently written - the statistics are powerful. We have been focusing on food donations to our local food bank but I have plenty of the personal care items the shelter is in need of and will be sending out a box this week. I have also put a post on my blog and will add your banner to our static "give back" section so more people can see your great mission."

"Amy, you rock! We give to a few charities and I was able to visit one of them. I can honestly say that seeing those whose lives it touched, every little bit does help!
I will be supporting your efforts too because that's just what friends (e-friends, at least) do!
But, more importantly, I'm praying to this is blessed!"
Holly
"This is a fantastic thing to do! I have a WHOLE BUNCH of Halls Cough Drops I am going to send! Just started getting them this week for free and I certainly don't need them all!

"Amy, I'm assuming it would be best to just send items directly to the mission?
I'll be putting up my post today, and I'll be back to donate some money later in the week.
What a great idea for helping your community!"

"Amy, I've created a blog post today on my blog to help promote your Big Give, and I will also be including it in my newsletter this week. Check out the blog at: http://www.emergencebiz.com/?p=266"

"G. Wayne- That is incredibly thoughtful. I am not sure if the organization has a membership to Sam's Club, but I can inquire and see what would be best for them. Thank you for asking.
The shipping address for Faith Mission is on their website or they can be shipped to me and I will see that they get to the organization.

"amy, thank you for letting us know about the struggles of families in your area. i am blessed to live in a city that has not seen a lot of problems with this crazy economy. it's easy to forget how hard things are at the moment for so many people.
after such awful hurricanes down here, so many people from across the US blessed our area. i'm amazed sometimes at how wonderful people can be.
thank you.

"Thank you, Amy, for using your "standing of influence" to help others! That is what it is all about! Yes, I will support your effort! I pray that God does BIG things through you as you help those in your area and as you encourage others to reach out! I was actually born in Rochester Indiana, not too far from you. I have family in your area and feel like a part of me calls it "home".

"Love this idea! Am going to put your banner on my sites and donate a little to the cause. I need to think of something to do also. Do you mean people doing something for your cause or something else?"

"The awe that I have for you and your ability to get things DONE...your big heart and your great blog :) continues to grow.
I have a post I've put together of the donations that we have been handing out (thanks to CVS and Dillon's and COUPONS)...but have just decided to make it BIGGER..inspired by you. I contacted two other local bloggers and we are going to collaborate and organize...and Get.Something.Done.
Will link up when we are up and running!"

"Wonderful way to give back and spread the word Amy!
I am participating and hope that everyone who needs the help, get its."

"It is definitely better to give than to receive, and it doesn't even have to cost a lot. The vast majority of us (myself included for sure!) could definitely afford to give more than we do, and the same saving techniques we use to buy things for ourselves can be used to purchase items inexpensively for others. Thanks for your efforts!"

"Smart move and what a great heart. I will surely do what I can to help. For inspiration take a look at what my daughter did last year at age 9. Proof one person like you can really make a difference ...

"Hi Amy, great post - I have a homeless man that I keep in fresh t-shirts, underwear, socks and toiletries not to mention food staples and some spare change. We also donate to the local food bank and Kingdom house. I also help support the Stray Rescue for animals. Left a linky to our blog post challenging our readers to donate as well. Thanks for getting this started!

"This is so great. I've been making a bag of my freebies to give away to a shelter when I got around to it. Now I am reading your post and they are having a huge collection at work. My stuff will be going directly there to support a women & children's shelter in New Orleans. If I can gather up some more stuff I will send it to you.
The stars are aligned, my dear! Thanks for "paying it forward"!"

"I just donated via paypal. You have reminded me that there is more going on in this world than changing diapers or doing dishes. I'm going to try to find out what our local shelter needs too."

"We are one of the families who are struggling because of the RV market. We don't have debt, but still can't afford our house anymore.
It's awesome that those who have no where to go...have Faith Mission.
I'll start collecting stuff (no extra $ though =(...
Is there a hub for donations, or do we need to go to Faith Mission?"
Katie
"Hi,
I have a ton of bedding, furniture and clothing that could be donated. I know it's not on the most-needed list, but maybe it could still be useful.

"Each month we feature a local charity on our blog, and do our best to get as much as possible with just $20 out of pocket. We also clear out all the closets, garage, etc. and ask friends for anything additional to donate. It is a small amount out of pocket, but it is amazing how much you can donate to those in need when you utilize sales, deals, coupons, and drugstore savings!
It is our family's way of teaching our kids that giving back feels better than spending on ourselves or stockpiling! We are hoping that by publishing it on a blog that we can encourage others to do the same for worthy causes in their area!
Thank you for encouraging others to share their "wealth" with those less fortunate.

"Amy,
I applaud your vision and efforts to help those in need in your community.
I am relatively new to blogging but have started a blog devoted to providing information, resources and 'lessons learned' to those caring for aging parents.
My recent entry is focused on helping to address loneliness in the elderly. See what a little bit of your time and love can do for one of the elderly in your community.
Keep up the great work! And, yes I will add your link to my blog :-)
