Mommy Time Management: Making My Plans Work
POSTED BY Amy at 7:00 AM

We did a really great series on self-care awhile back (you can scroll through my
Mommy Time Management category for all of the discussions and related talks on implementing self-care in your life) and I just wanted to check in with each of you and see how your self-care is going.
I know that I have found it is easy to care myself during the summer, but when our new school year starts, I suddenly seem to lose myself again. I am wondering if you are feeling the same way?
My self-care has really come from trial and error and discovering what type of person I am. Here is what I am discovering.
1.
I am not a morning person. I have tried being a morning person and I just can't do it. My workout attempts to wake up early left me feeling horrible the rest of the day and getting a jump on the day usually means I am tapping into the time when I feel less creative.
Therefore, I am not pushing being a morning person and am instead concentrating on utilizing the times when I feel best...which is the evening. I will no longer apologize for not being a morning person and will understand that maybe I will come to a stage in my life where mornings work better for me, but for now I am content on being groggy in the morning and enjoying the first bit of laziness while I can.
2.
I am not a gym person. I tried the gym with my kids and it did not work. My daughter is at a stage in her life where she is shy and scared when I am away from her. I don't know how long this stage will last, but dragging one whining kid and one crying kid to the gym so I could work out left me feeling stressed and guilty.
We decided to, instead, put our tax refund check towards a good treadmill that we could use while caring for our children at home. My husband is now able to run and train for his races in the winter seasons and I am able to squeeze in a workout when it is convenient for me. I am working out more often and I feel better than I did before.
3.
My self-care needs to be convenient for it to work. A treadmill in the basement...not convenient. A treadmill that is near my workspace so it is ready and waiting for me. Yup, that works.
Call me lazy, but self-care will only work for me if it is convenient. This means that I have to make those things available to me and group items in such a way that I will actually use them. My foot soak goodies are all together waiting for the night when I can soak my feet. My library books sit in a basket in my living room where I can grab one and read them. My craft supplies are ready for me to spend an evening working on what makes me most happy. Keeping stocked on my self-care items helps me to actually care for myself when I need it most.
4.
I need to put myself on a self-care schedule. I have made a commitment to myself to do one nice thing for myself for one hour a day. It is not an hour where I am watching my favorite show while I fold the laundry, pick up the kid's toys, and sign papers. No, the only multitasking that will be occurring is if I am watching my television show while soaking my feet.
As a mom, I get in the habit of making it about everyone else, even during the time that I should be caring for myself. One hour of total and carefree time devoted to myself is just what I need. The world will still spin, our house will still function, and I will be feeling better about myself in the process.
How do you care for yourself? Do you find it more difficult as the school year and activities begin? How do you make this a priority... or do you?(

"I need to learn this to. I'm curious, what kind of things are you doing for yourself in that one hour?"

"I've really been trying to make the extra effort. I've made sure to make dental appointments (and keep them) and gyn appointments as needed. I'm still working on fitting in the whole exercise thing though. I have a treadmill but my kids always want to jump on it with me and it ends up with a huge fight."

"Oh, let's see...
I knit, I exercise, I read magazines, I read books, I have a cup of tea or coffee and read the paper, I do Suduko puzzles, I knit, I craft, I soak my feet, I watch my television shows- that is usually what ends up happening over here :)"

"It's interesting - since my little one is not yet in school, I have a tougher time during the summer. I find that we make more weekend plans, so we get off our "schedule" (such that it is) easier. People are out of school - teachers and students - so when we run errands during the week, everything seems a little crazier. I actually look forward to back-to-school now. I'm sure that will change as we add to our family and the wee ones grow to school ages."

"I am a morning person so I am up at 5:30am smiling and happy!! I know - my husband tells me that he doesn't mind living with a morning person but a HAPPY Morning person is just so hard to deal with! Anyhow, I work full time away from home so I use that early morning time to get wash started, computer time for a non profit that I run, coffee (maybe I should have put that first), pick up house and work on my quilts. Then off to work and once I get home its time for dinner, off to the gym, fold wash, walk 2.5 miles with the dog and crash for the night. Our children are grown and gone so it's just myself and my husband so it may be easier in some ways but I really follow the sun and when it goes down, so do I. The dog walk has to be started by 5:30 so that I can be home before it gets dark. We live in the country in NH and it gets dark fast up here!"
"I'm glad that you posted this. I am curious - now that your son is back to school what is your morning routine like? I have two boys and I need to get my oldest to pre-school by 9am in the mornings. I'm always running around in the mornings and by the time we leave I already feel my day is off to a bad start."

"I've been having a good time with this issue lately. I joined sparkpeople.com (a free, nutrition/exercise tracker with a super supportive network) and have just taken off with my self care! School started two weeks ago for my 5 yo so I drop him off at school and come home and work out to one of my dvds with my 2 yo (who thinks Mommy jumping around is funny). I don't do any housework, I make sure DD has a fresh diaper, a snack and a drink and some interesting toys and then I go to town. I actually look forward to it. I haven't done much self care at all since the birth of my ds 5 years ago so this is major for me. I always felt like such a martyr taking care of the house and the kids instead of just exercising and letting the other stuff sit.
It really hit home the other day when I was away from the house most of the day and I came home to a frazzled husband. He just kept shaking his head and saying "I SWEAR I cleaned this house 3 times today!" *Smile* Oh, buddy, I believe you. I say it every day.
See? Letting it go isn't going to make that much of a difference anyway so we should be taking better care of ourselves instead. :)
I completely agree about the convenience factor too. I portioned out snacks in little zip lock bags and now I don't have to think when I'm hungry. Just sit, check email, have a snack, get back to it. Good for you and your husband for getting a tread mill. This life is definitely not one size fits all!

"I have been making some progress on this, but I'm trying to tackle one thing at a time in hopes of building good habits that will stick!
So far, I found a hairdresser I like that is near work, so I can go on my lunch hour instead of trying to coordinate so DH can watch our daughter after work or on the weekends-huge improvement! I have been getting up earlier (I am a morning person, so when DD sleeps well, I'm up around 5am) to get some "me" time with my coffee and computer. That leaves me more time to leasurly tidy up and prep for the next day after I put DD to bed.
I think I need to go back to my evening checklist to help me move through the things I need to do and then relax, and I need to get better at limiting my internet time...how are you doing with that?"
"I like this post! I like how you have adapted things to work best for you, I'm encouraged by that. In fact, I think I'll go put some special foot lotion on my feet now."
"I have taken one say off a week from work. I take the kids to school and get to spend an entire day doing what ever I feel like."

"Our morning routine isn't ironed out yet because my son is going to afternoon kindergarten. In the morning we are just doing breakfast, getting dressed, and then I work on his homework with him. We read a book while we wait for his bus and spend time being quiet and lazy. I try not to plan too much before he goes to school because he has to be ready & waiting for his bus by 11:15. I think we are trying to figure out how to manage our day right now with this middle-of-the-day kindergarten :)"

"Great reminder to self-care! I have been making many plans and trying things out, but so far not alot has "stuck". I love the idea of making it all convenient for me though, it's a great way to approach it."
