We take our Holland America cruise bags to Aldi to put our groceries in to take home. I love the place and I love to save money. I also like the fact that the only choice you have to make about peanut butter is creamy or chunky. I don't want to spend my time deciding which brand of 100 to choose from. Anything to save my time and my money is all for me.

I have a family of 5 and we love Aldi. I love that the store is small enough that I can make my grocery list at home and know how much I am going to spend because I have memorized all the prices.
I do have extended family members that still refuse to try Aldi and I keep trying to convince them. When they like the food that I bring to family gatherings I make it a point that they know it comes from Aldi.
I am so glad that I can get recipe ideas from this website. All of my cook books call for way more then I need, but this website helps me still shop wisely. As said in other comments, we each choose for ourselves what we eat and we can not blame anyone else for our health, good or bad.

I feel sad for whoever made this comment. :( I feel blessed to have the opportunity to shop at Aldi! Growing up as one of 9 children, my mom worked hard to make their food budget REALLY stretch. When Aldi arrived on the scene in Milwaukee (which was almost an hour drive for us), she happily shopped there at least once per month and got great deals (this was back when the checkers rang up everything by hand - thank goodness for scanners!). :) I would often go with her, half of the grocery list in my hand and my own cart loaded with purchases. It was an excellent opportunity for her to show me not only fiscal responsibility, but frugality - items purchased at Aldi (especially the basics like milk, eggs, flour, sugar, etc.) are just like those purchased at the regular grocery store, only with a lot less mark-up. It showed me how to be an informed and picky consumer.
Once I married, I was thrilled to know there would be an Aldi within 20 miles of me. And believe me, I've seen every kind of vehicle in the parking lot - from a Jaguar, Hummer and Land Rover, to the most rusted out Toyota you can imagine. But all the shoppers have one thing in common - they enjoy good quality food at good prices, and they are not too prideful to shop at Aldi (which does have a bad reputation, I agree with another poster). My husband grew up in a much more affluent family and although his mom thought nothing of shopping at Aldi, he dislikes it there. He loves the food, but if I sent him to grocery shop, he wouldn't go there.
As far as the original comment, it makes me sad that people can be so narrow-minded when it comes to food. People could say the same for Wal-Mart.

Yes, Wabash is correct. Aldi and Trader Joe's are owned by the same company. So I wonder how the woman that hates Aldi feels about that?

I LOVE Aldi. I shop there about every two weeks. There are only a couple of things I still have to get at Walmart or Publix and that is only because Aldi doesn't carry them (black-eyed peas and low-fat sour cream). We eat very healthy meals and I feed 6 people (7 until this past August) every day. I use a lot of ground turkey and tons of the boneless, skinless chicken breasts. Also, you can't beat the price of their beans and tomato products. I make fresh salsa each week, as well.

I have friends who say they will never shop at Aldi because they also think it is for "poor" people. Funny thing is, I have more money in the bank than those friends and I don't ever worry about having enough food for my family and friends.

P.S. It is also the cleanest grocery store I have ever been in.

I love Aldi! I shop there regularly. Their fresh produce is much cheaper than anywhere else in town. The Fit and Active line of products are very healthy. And they sell organic food too!
I read that the guy who owns Aldi is brothers with the guy that owns Trader Joes (which only sells organic products).

I think that the anti-Aldi person has probably never set foot in the store so she should just keep her snobby thoughts to herself.

I shop monthly at Aldi and where my MIL hates it, I personally love it.
I make all my meals from the ground up.
Adli is the only place that I have found so far that I can spend a set amount and still walk out with what I need.
With a husband that eats for three and two children that can clean out any decently stocked pantry I am grateful for the Aldi in my area.
Where my mother in law will spend $200+ for a week, I spend the same at Aldi for the month.
You know she's just jealous. :P

Sorry, I didn't mean to upset anyone who adds an unneeded apostrophe s to things. I was just being petty about the anti-Aldi woman.
We have a large medical research lab near us, called "Abbott Laboratory," and lots of people call it Abbott's. It bugs the people who work there and it rubbed off on me. Now I see that unneeded apostrophe s everywhere. On the other hand, I know lots of people who insist on calling Kinko's, "Kinko." And yes, you are so right about the SwifTer.
I do believe the official store name is Aldi. On their web site, they capitalize it: ALDI. I think Amy wrote a history about it and it is short for the original company name, ALbright DIstribution or something like that. But whatever we call it, it still rocks! I love that store.

Oh, dagnab, I am one of those that adds the "'s" to Aldi, but then I never say it the same way each time, LOL.... Sometimes I say "ahhh-l-dee" sometimes it's "a-(short a)l-dee....." I think though, in my defense, I'd heard about it SOOOOO much from so many people, that by the time I was close enough to one to start shopping there, I didn't have a clue as to what exactly it was called. My kids just look for the "orange and blue sign."

Now on that note, I totally agree. A couple of my peeves are those that say "KrogerS," "EckerdS" and "SwifTer." So I am making a mental note to drop the 's' from Aldi, and hope that being a European name, it is pronunced Ahh-l-dee.

Please don't make me rethink my typos, though. I can't get past them *rofl*

PS- this is written in humour, Kara. I hope you take it that way! I actually blushed when I read your comment, knowing that I am guilty of said crime. I just never paid attention to the proper pronunciation & spelling. So can the real pronunciation please stand up?

I agree with most of the above posts, especially about the healthy foods found at ALdi, it all depends on what you choose to buy. I can see how people would get the impression that Aldi is for "poor people" On some days, there are long lines and you see people paying with their Link Cards (modern food stamps)
I also, however, never fail to see nice cars like Lexus and BMW parked in the parking lot.

Aldi is not my only grocery stop, but I refuse to pay 2x as much for staples, when I know I can get them at Aldi for much less.

I debated whether or not to respond to your post since I agree with pretty much everything here. :) We love Aldi's and I do almost all of my grocery shopping there. I have a few things that I like to pick up at Sam's in bulk because we go through them so fast and in those instances the bulk prices beat the Aldi's price. However, I have found that as I make more of an effort to make things from scratch and buy less processed things, we eat very healthy from Aldi's. And, because of their great prices, I'm able to put more (and better) meat on our table more often because I can fit it into our grocery budget for our family of (almost) 5, which pleases my husband. :)
